“Sisters are doing it for themselves at Noble Park Secondary College.”Our Vocational Education and Training in schools program allow for many students to excel and achieve in many different industries and the Tsegay sisters are certainly taking their achievements to the next level and we are very proud.
Both sisters have completed their qualification; Mulu in hairdressing and Shewit in Com-mercial Cookery. Mulu has also been awarded the Certificate II in Hairdressing VET stu-dent of 2016 by Skillinvest, Dandenong.
The girls have come a long way from Africa where they lived with their families and close friends.Mulu and Shewit unlike many other new migrants have come from the Ethiopian country-side and have embraced our shores for a prosperous future and it would seem that they are stepping into that direction. Many opportunities are available for them because they have a VET Qualification and the perseverance to be a part of the workforce. The workforce is an important part of self- con-fidence and being employed is certainly a strong element in feeling a part of the society.“The majority of the Ethiopian born Victorians today are employed in production, transport and labouring; 17% of workers are employed in managerial or professional positions.”(Museum Journal VIC 2011)

マンガコンクルAfter running for the last few weeks, the votes for the 2016 Manga Competition have been voted. The winner is Nikhil Singh 11B with 76 votes （おめでとうございます）. Second place is Helen Lu 11D with 61 votes and in third place is Marika Tharakon 7B with 42 votes. Congratulations to all the entrants and especially to the finalists. The prizes and certificates will be presented at the first assembly next year. Thank you also to the students and staff who voted. The competition was extremely popular with all students and the standard of the drawings was fantastic. We received twenty entries. Well done everybody. Don’t forget to start work on entries for the 2017 competition.

Just a reminder that our sister school, Shinminato Senior High School, will be visiting the college next year for seven days. They will be arriving on Saturday July 30th. We will start recruiting host families as soon as we return from the summer holi-days. On Sunday the 11th of September we arrived at Haneda Airport, Japan. We then took a three hour train ride to Toyama Sta-tion where we were greeted by the Principal and some staff members of Shinminato Senior High School, our sister school in Japan. They took us to Shinminato SHS in a bus and when we arrived at the school we were taken into the cafeteria where we met our host families. We also met some of our friends who came to Australia last year. We then introduced ourselves to the host families. After that we had a small lunch and then we separated off and did the activities our host families organised for us. During the first week when we were at the school we did many activities such as participating in a music class, English class, Japanese class, art class, P.E class, cooking class. We had two sightseeing tours. On the first sightseeing tour we went to Gokayama. We visited the old and traditional Japanese homes and went to a paper craft factory where we did paper making followed by a ferry ride. On the second sightseeing tour we went to Takaoka and many other places visiting the temples and we also went to Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Garden which both were breathtaking.
At our welcoming assembly their school band held a concert for us. Their band is called the Brass Band and at the end of the concert we were given a T-shirt with their band name on the back and a handmade card. Their skills of playing music were astounding and it was obvious that they worked extremely hard for this concert. At the end of the concert they gave us T-shirts with brass band written in Japanese at the back and a hand- made card showing their happiness to see us. This was one of the two concerts they held for us. The second concert was on the Thursday and it was our farewell party. Six of Shiminato’s students performed for us. Three of the girls did a gymnastics performance and three of boys did a drum performance. They were both magnificent and following their performance we had a few speeches from the Principal, Assistant Principal and some other staff members. We then had dinner and I was in heaven because there was such a wide variety of foods and they all tasted amazing. After dinner we did our performances. As a group we preformed the ‘Zorba’ which is a traditional Greek dance and we did the ‘Nutbush’. Sara and I did a separate dance which was an Afghan dance that we also had the opportunity of teaching to the Japanese students. We were then presented with more gifts and the party ended; everyone was crying and hugging each other. We did not want this trip and this experience to come to an end. In conclusion, this experience and opportunity that I had was the most exciting, challenging and fun experience that I have ever had. It taught me many things, made me more independent, shaped me into a better person and I cannot wait until our next Shinminato visit.
