Founded in 2008, Marc Brew Company is committed to developing innovative collaborative work that fuses a fierce physicality derivative from choreographer Marc Brew with tender expression to explore an emotional narrative in dance.

Grounded in contemporary dance technique and classical ballet and drawing on the unique physicality of each performer, the work with disabled and non-disabled artists is honest, unsentimental and recognizably human.

Following the widespread success of Nocturne, his first outdoor work, Marc Brew has created a new work for outdoor locations in 2014, (i)land.

Faced with life on a deserted island, three characters uncover a means of escape back to civilisation. As the narrative unfolds, the characters find pieces of a vehicle buried in the sand that will take them off the island. They work together to build the craft, only to find that it will carry just one of them.

Part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme, supported by Without Walls

(i)land centres on a 6 ton pile of sandrepresenting the land the characters findthemselves in, and this provides a safedance space in which Marc can exploremovement in solo, duet and trio formsaway from his wheelchair.

Drawing inspiration from stories such asThe Lord of the Flies, Lost and Castaway, and the legends of the Highlandclearances and Australian outback,(i)land aims to engage audiences inquestions about perceptions of the bodyin dance, the politics of disability, isolation and exclusion, ingenuity andinvention.
