    Seasons Not Over Yet

Typical of Northeast Ohio, the weather was up anddown this summer. The short lived 90 degreetemperatures and July with the above normalrainfall did cause some trying moments forTurfgrass management, but all in all it seems most

    clubs fared well.

Its hard to believe Labor Day has just passed andmarked the official close to summer, days are becoming shorter kids are back toschool and the traffic at the golf course has seemed to slow down. Aeration hasbegun at some clubs or shortly will in the coming weeks. Time to prepare the greensfor winter and the upcoming season, before you know it the Ohio TurfgrassConference will be upon us and we all will be talking about next year and how we arepreparing for the 2014 season.

Maybe I am getting a little ahead of myself; let me speak in the moment of what ishappening now. I have some exciting news to share with everyone, over the passseveral months the Northern Ohio Golf Course Superintendent Association board anda committee consisting of Bill Prest, Frank Dobie and Dave Webner, have beenworking tirelessly through a process to decide the next recipient of the Mal McLarenaward. As you may know, the NOGCSA has had some extraordinary members fittingthis prestigious recognition, so it was very challenging to decide who was most fittingthis honor.

I had the honor to deliver the news to Jean Esposito, CGCS, Golf CourseSuperintendent of Hinckley Hills that she would be inducted into the Hall of Fame onOctober 9, 2013 at the Northern Ohio Golf Associations headquarters in North

Olmsted. Jean now sits in the company of some of the greatsof the NOGCSA. The likes of John J. Spodnik, Frank Dobie, JimFitzgibbon, Hank Meirs, Lou Greco, Steve Gipson, Don Sweda,Robert Figurella and Terry Bonar.

As I sat with Jean and gave her the good news, I could see shewas completely humbled by the whole experience, she couldnot surmise the fact that her peers thought that much of herto be inducted in to the Hall of Fame.

This is what I love about our business, Jean pictures herselfjust as a Golf Course Superintendent trying to survive in thismarket all the while helping, lending a hand, giving advice, volunteering (two times) to be on the board all for her fellowSuperintendents. She is there to help in anyway. That Jean isone of the reasons the committee picked you.

So mark your calendars for this great event and come out andsupport a great event and a great person.

LOOK UNDER THE SURFACE TO MAINTAIN PLAYING QUALITY

By Keith Happ, director, North-Central Region August 5, 2013

The recent change in the weather has brought reliefto many areas of the region. However, heavy rainfallwreaked havoc on low lying areas of fairways and onpoor draining greens. It is very difficult to maintainturf quality when the soils are saturated. Add heatstress and there may be no chance to control or limitthe damage. Adequate drainage is just as importantas timely irrigation with respect to sound watermanagement. Greens with poor or no internaldrainage suffered during the month of July.

Air drainage can relieve turf stress when the soils aresaturated. Venting programs, using 3 to 8 mm solidtines, are ideal for stimulating gas exchange. This gasexchange can be critical to the turfs ability to surviveduring periods of soils saturation. The venting channelin the soil increases the surface area for evaporationof excess soil moisture. Increase air circulation with afan and the effect is even more beneficial. A gentlebreeze across the vented surface of a green can helpto dry the soil, allow the turf to cool itself and if soil

temperatures are low, stimulate root growth.

When the need is urgent, venting can be performedon small areas prone to soil saturation. Do nothesitate to examine low areas of greens that do notdrain well. Turf thinning and algae development canbe prevented. If anaerobic soils (Black Layer) arepresent, vent as often as once a week before surfaceconditions decline. Maintain speed and smoothnessby rolling after the venting process. A great deal ofresearch has been conducted on the benefits of shortterm aeration relief. The turf will respond positively.

Dont wait until the surface declines to act. Beproactive. Vent with standard coring units, slice, spike,HydroJect or use a deep tine venting procedure toensure the turf survives and playability can besustained.

Anaerobic soils have been a common problem with allof the rain experienced throughout the region.Venting the sulfide gas to the atmosphere before rootdecline occurs is essential.

The last few days have been a welcome break from thestress period of heat, humidity and rain that past fewweeks. Signs of the stress period however are evidenton a number of golf course fairways throughout Ohio.As a brief recap the week of July 15th saw highhumidity, rainfall, and high soil temperatures (as wasthe case from the previous week). Late in the week intoMonday of this week (July 22nd) several areas receivedsignificant rain within a short period of time.

Standing water and saturated soils was the result ofexcessive rainfall. If excessive rain or flooding occurs inthe spring turfgrasses are relatively tolerant due to the

water and soil temperatures are low (see Impact ofFlooding on Turf . However, in the summer high soil

temperatures combined with excessive rainfall canresult in turf death (photograph). Actually thecombination of anaerobic soil conditions (lack of soil

oxygen) resulting from soil saturation and high soiltemperatures can kill turfgrass roots within hours andthe entire plant within days.

To reduce the potential from turf loss from what isbasically a soil problem caused by a lack of drainagerequires the installation of a subsurface and/or surfacedrainage. If you have suffered turf loss on your fairwaysor any turf area the signs are there to show you wheredrainage should be installed. For now, try to dry the turfout and when possible break any surface sealing(crusting) that may have occurred through coring. Andseed if the temperatures remain moderate.

Effective immediately; it is no longer necessary for Class Cmembers and Associate categories to be members of GCSAA inorder to be a member or apply for membership to NOGCSA. Thischange to the bylaws was done to encourage membership ofindividuals in these categories in our local association. It wasdetermined by the board, that for these Classes, the requirementof dual membership was too large a financial burden. It is thehope of the Board that this change will encourage individualsnew to our profession to join our chapter, remaining active andinvolved members throughout their careers .
