Nomads News Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club - Perth - Western Australia

Writing this article whilst watching the US Open I overheard the quirky term “fescue”. First I

thought they were sneezing but then I realised they were referring to the long grass off the

fairways. Anyway, as Google is my best friend, I looked up the meaning of the word

‘fescue’. “Any grass of the genus Festuca, some species which are cultivated for pasture of

lawn. 2. A pointer, as a straw or slender stick, used to point out the letters in teaching

children to read”. (Origin – Latin “festuca” or Middle English “fescue”.) That sort-of satisfied

my curiosity but why go to the extent of calling it a fancy name? To me, and many of my

fellow golfers it is what it is, tall grass which, if at all possible, should be avoided at all times.

Most of us will, at some point during a round of golf, find ourselves in an unenviable place on

the course but we just take it in our stride. Sometimes we end up in locations where

Elephants go to die (ask Chris Athienides), or we meet up with a Kangaroo just going about

its day – scaring the living daylights out of us (ask Garth Ellis) or meeting a LBS (long brown

snake) crossing our path when nature calls.(ask me about this one) – immediate “stage-

fright” and wait for the clubhouse. – So, a little bit of tall grass is certainly not that much of a

challenge – take an unplayable lie and get on with it.

Records are meant to be broken and this was again the case at Carramar where 53

players took on, most for the 1st time, a little known gem of a course. Yes, it took some of us

about an 1½ hr to get there but nevertheless a great course to keep on our ‘to play’ list.

If you haven’t had the chance to take a peek at our updated Website and Facebook page,

do yourself a favour and go and take a look. You will be surprised at the content and the

wealth of information available at the touch of a button.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

Phew, what a month we’ve had.......Firstly a record breaking attendance at Carramar – 53

players in the field. It would have been better if Tim Knox hadn’t hurt himself on the

Saturday prior to the game and the odd no-show on the day. Nevertheless, a record-

breaking attendance.

It was a pleasure welcoming one of our own back into the fold even though it was only for

the weekend. Fabian Baird, one of Perth’s Founder Members, was in town for his buck’s

party and duly took the opportunity to join us for the game. Strange as this may sound,

Fabian, who is now a Sydney South member, played in his Perth kit.

Due to a late morning start, the prizegiving was shortened but nevertheless proved to be

successful with a blanket fine being dished out to each and every player. The highlight of

the evening was the Induction into the Nomads fold of Alex Nicoll and Steve Maritz –

welcome gentlemen, may you stay with us be long, full of great golf and great camaraderie.

With only 5 more matches to play before the Annual General Meeting in December, now is

the time to start thinking of who you would like to see taking over the Junior Vice-Captain’s

portfolio for 2018. This is the only position which is elected by ballot from the floor at the

AGM. It must be noted that this position carries a 4-year commitment as the person elected

will progress to the Vice-Captaincy in the 2nd

year and Captaincy in the 3rd

year and then

serve as Past Captain in the 4th year.

Unfortunately I will not be attending the Hillview match as I will be taking my lovely wife on a

well-deserved honeymoon (and also attending Fabian & Kelly’s wedding) so I will be leaving

Hector to look after the affairs of the Club in my absence.

“Rantings”–

As I have been away on a well deserved break since before the Charity Day event, I

am relaxed and at peace with the world so, in the spirit of goodwill I have no rantings

this month but beware....................there’s always next month.

2017 NOMADS AUSTRALIA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Expressions of Interest have been circulated to all Nomads – Perth members and at the time of

going to print 19 members have submitted their intentions with some more possibilities in the

pipeline.

The next step on the Road to Sydney is that you will, in the not too distant future, receive your

personal invitation to participate.

Gentlemen, let the games begin………..The next exciting event on the Nomads Australia golf

calendar is the 2017 Nomads Australia National Tournament scheduled to be played over the

weekend Friday 20th > Sunday 22nd October 2017 at the Kooindah Waters Residential Golf and

Spa Resort, 25 minutes out of Sydney.

Expectations are that, by a recent show of hands, a contingent of, at least 15 Perth Nomads will

be travelling over East to defend our title of National Champions. Those who attended the 2016

event in Brisbane can attest to the fact that a huge amount of fun, including some serious golf,

was had by all and if you are a new Nomad we recommend that you attend at least one of

these Tournaments to experience true Nomads camaraderie.

Friday is set aside for a practice round (I’m sure that you would all like to play a practice round to

identify the many water hazards around the course) and official opening ceremony and flag

raising in the evening. Round 1 starts at around 11h30 on Saturday followed by a formal dinner

and prize-giving, complete with entertainment. Round 2 usually starts early on Sunday followed

by lunch and prize-giving and closing ceremony allowing participants ample time to get home,

especially those traveling from afar.

Watch this space as we will be distributing Entry Forms to all members upon receipt

the much steeper ones needed to clear obstacles (47° for a 9-iron, 58° for a
