Nomads News Official Newsletter of Nomads Golf Club Perth Western Australia
Time for change ………Nomads News will be going through some
significant changes in the very near future, making it not only easier
to read, but will also be incorporated onto our website where you
will be able to access specific topics and reports at the press of a
button. Before you start banging your heads against the wall, don’t’
worry, you will still receive your own personal copy via e-mail but for
those wanting a more choice, and to get the Nomads message out
there, the website would reach a wider readership and will give the
club an extra boost to the outside world and enable us to create
more interest and perhaps membership growth.
Our 5th Anniversary game is next on the cards and I would like to
draw your attention to the fact that a. we will be playing at
Joondalup Resort one of WA’s signature golf courses, b. you will
have the use of a cart. Costs for this game will higher than usual but
at $75 + $10 for the, very popular Money Draw. We will also have a
super-sized Raffle. Tickets for this will be on sale after the game at $5
for 5 tickets. Additional tickets may be purchased at $1 ea
Please remember to submit your intentions by not later than July 4th
via the normal on-line registration process.
We are pleased to announce Team Perth for the 10th Nomads
Australia National Tournament. See pg 15 for details.
Until Next Month……………Happy Golfing

Captain’s Corner
Our June game at Carramar started off on a wet and very windy day which luckily
turned shortly after tee off -for at least for the last few groups. I had the privilege to
play with Hennie Blom who scored 40 points on a challenging day and on his least
favourite course in Perth. Well done Hennie!
At our June game we had two guests, Andrew van Rooyen and Grove Patterson and
we inducted three new members, Adrian Briglia, Stefan Muller and Craig Macey. To
our guests, we hope you had a good time with us and hope to see you back soon,
hopefully as prospective members. To Adrian, Stefan and Craig, once again welcome
to the Nomads family.
As you now know, we have our 5th anniversary dinner on 7 July 2018 at Blue Grill and
our anniversary game at Joondalup on 8 July 2018. Our Nomads friends Mark Howard-
Browne (National President), Jo Landsberg (Past National President and Secretary)
and Myles Craye (National Junior Vice President) will be at the dinner and at the game.
Please make them all feel welcome.
Finally, you will see that the entries to the Nationals Tournament for 2018 have been
announced, subject to verification from the National Tournament organisers. We have
a waitlist for six of the Perth Nomads and will inform the individuals on the waitlist of an
opening as soon as it arises.
I look forward to seeing you at the dinner and / or Joondalup!
Best wishes, Hector
SHOOTING FROM THE LIP………..
Sadly, the Patron of Nomads Golf Australia, Peter Thomson CBE AO, passed away on
Wednesday 20th June 2018, at the age of 88. Peter had been suffering from Parkinson’s
disease for a number of years before his death.
Peter was the first Australian to win The Open and lifted the Claret Jug 5 times. He was a
prolific tournament champion around the world, winning more than 50 times.
He wrote for The Age in Melbourne, was a television commentator and served as President
of the Australian PGA for 32 years.
RIP Peter

NOMADS APARREL
By Garth Ellis
I have stock of the following. (If there is anything else you may be
after, come and talk to me so I can see what can be done)
Caps & Hats (floppy) – Have you mislaid, lost or wish to purchase a
spare? –
Shirts – Is your golf shirt starting to look a bit worn or just wanting
another shirt?
Socks – I’m sure that your socks have taken strain. –
Nomad Belts – Has your girth increased or decreased? – I may just
have the right size for you.
Jackets – Short Sleeved (reversible) – Stock up now for Winter....You
may l want to invest in a warm jacket. These come with the Nomads
Logo and your name embroidered.
Scorecard Holders – Keep your scorecard tidy and dry.
GOLF QUIPS
golf.ing, a duffer’s dictionary by Henry Beard & Roy McKie, continued…….
warm-up exercises – Although golf is not as physically demanding as
most other sports, it certainly doesn’t hurt to loosen up one’s muscles
before a round. Here are a few simple exercises designed to get you
ready for the day’s play:
Hold out your arm, make a fist and shake it back and forth, then open the
fist, palm facing inward, extend the middle finger, and pump your hand up
and down.
Kick at the ground, then stomp on it, first with your right foot, then with
your left, then jump up and down.
Take off your hat, grasp it in your hand, throw it on the ground, pick it up,
and repeat.
Raise your arms over your head, fists clenched, wave them vigorously, and
let out as loud a scream as you can, holding it for at least 10 seconds.
water hazard – Any boggle up waddup border burbled byb reb orb
yellob markglubs stakebles fromble whidg idg uz legalble, bub ofteb
inadvisabubble, tub tryb tub higgle thub ballablub.
whiff – Familiar term widely misused to describe a particularly fast and
powerful style of practice swing intentionally made directly over the
ball.
wind – Natural motion of the air. There are four basic winds that golfers
generally encounter on a course: a headwind; a wind that blows
squarely in their faces; a wind that blows from the green towards the
tee; and a wind that blows from a point directly in front of them to a
point directly behind them
woods – 1. Type of club used to hit a ball a long distance. 2. Place
where the ball lands after being hit a long distance.
wrist – In golfers, the swollen joint that connects a sore hand to an
aching elbow and throbbing shoulder.
X-outs – A series of “X’s” are printed over the brand name of some
golf balls to indicate that, because of some minor imperfections, they
are “seconds” and are sold at a deep discount from the price
normally charged for the ball. Although they seem very expensive,
golf balls are in fact a lot cheaper than they were in the early days of
the game, when the handmade, goosedown-stuffed, leather-
covered “featherie” or the rubber “guttie” represented a sizable
investment, but it can still be painful to lose one. Thus, golfers who
routinely hit errant shots will switch to an X-out ball on the hole with a
water hazard, or, if they really lack confidence, a “range ball” (one
taken from the driving range), a “smylie” (a ball with a deep cut in it),
or a “filchie” (a ball surreptitiously removed from another golfer’s bag)
