Page 3: Non-profit Org. U.S. Postage PAID Esko’s Corner March.pdfMarie Kondo, am I supposed to then get rid of all of my socks? Marie suggests a one-time tidying event that will ensure you

By now, you’ve probably heard of the new hit Netflix original, “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.” I wanted to see what all of the fuss was about, so I decided to start with her book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” All I’ll say is this: while I found many helpful tips and tricks to creating a more orderly and tidy home, I have no intentions of fully committing to the KonMari method.

The KonMari method is really about getting rid of the “stuff ” and keep-ing only what brings you ultimate joy. She asks you to literally handle all objects and decide if they spark joy in your heart. If not, you are to thank them for their service and toss them. This sounds ideal, but I had some questions...There are many things in a home that are necessary that do not bring me joy-like socks. According to Marie Kondo, am I supposed to then get rid of all of my socks?

Marie suggests a one-time tidying event that will ensure you do not revert back to your old untidy ways. She gives you a precise outline on the categories to work through, and it must be done in this order: clothes, books, papers, miscellany and me-mentos. While I didn’t attempt my ti-dy-event yet, I did put some thought into how I’d go about it.

Usually, I do not find getting rid of clothes to be too difficult. Check.

Although Marie says you most likely won’t reread your books, I

have a hard time getting rid of them. I cannot even fathom the idea of parting with my “Harry Potter Collection.” Next.

Papers are something I’ve been needlessly holding onto apparently. Old bill statements, manuals to my electronics and appliances, old cards from random events...certainly I can get rid of those. And those I need to keep - tax documents, contracts, mortgage papers - I’ll simply file away. Got it.

Miscellany. This is the cat-egory I’d most like to work through in my home. I have so much stuff; so many knick knacks and things I don’t necessarily need that are clogging up my peace-ful space. Here, Marie also gives you permission to get rid of things which were gifted to you with-

out guilt. She says these items have served their purpose by the initial joy of the giver when they gave it to you. This one, I think I can do.

Mementos is the category I have the most trouble with when it comes to Marie’s suggestions. I don’t be-lieve I’ll ever pick up an old picture or letter and think it does not bring me joy. Marie shuns the ideas of boxes filled with old photographs “serving no purpose,” but I’ve quite enjoyed going through them from time to time to remember things of the past. I’m not sold on this one yet.

Overall, I found the KonMari Method a bit too extreme for me. However, I will share some of the helpful tips that I do plan to put into

practice. Re-folding my clothes! Apparently,

if you fold your clothes, in thirds, into nice tight rectangles and store them vertically, you can fit twice as much in a drawer!

Going through my bill folder and discarding all of the unimportant papers. I guess I don’t need to keep all of my already-paid bill statements in a folder in the desk. Who knew?

When I decide to tidy, it will be without my husband and kids around to make me feel guilty about things I’ve decided no longer bring

me joy. Designate a spot for every thing.

This way, every object has its own place to live and it’s easier to put it away when you’re done with it.

The book does give you a grand picture of a simplified and joyful life, and I was slightly motivated to try out some of Marie’s techniques. I also do believe that someone who is really ready for an overhaul in life-style might find her tips “magical”. However, I’m just not ready for that quite yet.

March’s Habit of the Month- Seek to Understand, Then be Understood

Habit #5 is about listening before you talk. Did you know that only 10 percent of our communication is represented by words we say, another 30 percent is by our sounds and 60 percent is by our body language? We need to make sure we are listening to other people’s ideas and feelings to gain understanding. We will share with our students the importance of seeing things from others viewpoints. We will discuss the importance of being a good listener and the factors that make someone a good listener. Home connection

• Try to go one hour without talking even once. Instead, just watch the people around you and listen to what they are saying.

• Think of someone in your life who you think is a good listener. Your grandma? Your dad? Your best friend? What is it that makes them a good listener? Try to do some of the things that this person does when someone is talking with you.

On Friday, February 8, 42 Win-terquist 4th-6th graders participat-ed in an Inventor’s Fair at the Pine Tree Plaza in Cloquet. Students could work by themselves or with

a partner to identify a problem, determine possible solutions to that problem, and through an exper-imentation process, develop an invention or prototype to display at

the Inventor’s Fair. Student in-ventors recorded their process in a log, which was included in the judging process. Stu-dents also created a backboard with pictures and pertinent information related to their invention. Each invention was examined by two judges and student inventors were asked to explain their invention and inventing process to the judges.

Esko students created games, household helpers, kitchen help gadgets, products that pets can use and a variety of other products.

Esko students did very well—receiving not only Kids’ Choice awards, but Honorable Men-tion and First Place honors.

Congratulations to all of our inventors!

High School News

BY GREG HEXUM

Like all high school students in Minnesota, EHS 7-12 graders are extensively tested and as-sessed during the spring of each year. These tests include an array of nationally and state mandated assessments across subject areas and grade levels. It is essential that students participate in the-ses exams. Please review the following dates to determine which tests impact your student(s) and make every effort to have your students in school on these days.

If you have additional questions about any of the listed assessments, please contact Esko High School Assessment Coordinator, Chad Stoskopf at 879-4673 x 609.

AP CALCULUS - May 14, 2019MCA testing will take place in the AM on the

dates above starting sometime after 8:15am and ending at approximately 10am.  MCA reading tests take 2-3.5 hours, MCA math tests take 1.5-3 hours, and MCA science takes 1.5-2.5 hours to

complete.  We have set aside two days for math and reading but MCA tests are not timed so stu-dents will be allowed additional time if necessary.

ACT testing will start 1st hour and be complet-ed some time 4th hour.

The purpose of these assessments is to measure each student’s achievement level for the specified subject, to guide instruction, to measure progress over time, and in some cases provide information related to career and college readiness.

Test results will be made available as soon as possible after closing the test or test window.  The Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) and the website at http://education.state.mn.us includes information for parents including testing calendars, user guides, test specifications, and technical reports.

For a comprehensive K-12 assessment calendar, see the Esko Public Schools website: http://www.esko.k12.mn.us/calendars/_2018-2019_testing_ calendar

Attention 7th grade baseball players:

Esko Schools does not offer spring baseball for 7th graders! Next year, as an 8th grader, your player will have the opportunity of playing spring baseball for Esko school. The 8th grade year is the first year playing on a regulation sized field.

Your summer season game schedule will be-

gin May 13th. Prior to that our youth baseball board will open up registrations, there will be an evaluation camp, coaches will draft teams, and your coach will contact you regarding practices and other details. Your practices will more than likely begin at the end of April/beginning of May. Essentially, baseball will be the same for you as it has always been.

The difference is you will be playing Interme-diate Baseball (on a slightly bigger field). The

league is comprised of 12 and 13 year olds (6th and 7th graders) and is a part of the North-land Big League (very similar to the Quad City League). Games are played on Mondays and Wednesdays and will go from May 13 - July 31. There are no Sunday games and nothing during the week of the 4th of July. Metal cleats are NOT allowed. Keep your eyes and ears open on Facebook and/or the Esko Corner for details on registration.
