With much pride, I accepted the nomination for the presidency of LASHA for the Years 2011 and 2012. Since our group is no longer affiliated with the Jewish Home for the Aging, I felt that it would be necessary to refocus our priorities. We would have to set course for some day soon establishing our own Home for the Aging and, meanwhile, continue to cater to the needs of our elderly still living in their own homes.

Our Executive Director, Rhonda Goldsmith, and I sought out the help of Jewish Family Services in Van Nuys and learned that the majority of calls that they receive from community members seek information concerning affordable housing. At a recent LASHA Board of Directors meeting, we broached the subject and reached agreement on this issue.

Our first task would be to ascertain the needs of the elderly in the Sephardic community of Greater Los Angeles. We have made considerable progress during these past few months. It has been heartbreaking to hear the many sad stories being repeated again and again of the need for affordable housing. After paying their rent, many, now living only on Social Security checks, find it necessary to decide whether to buy food or their prescribed medications.

That is why we have embarked on a three-million-dollar campaign. This is certainly LASHA’s greatest challenge since severing ties with the Jewish Home. We have engaged a new member to our staff to help us raise the needed funds. Meanwhile, we will continue to visit the elderly in need and schedule on-going outreach events. These include wonderful lunches, arts and crafts gatherings, yoga classes and trips to the Hollywood Bowl, Farmers Market, the beaches, and Indian casinos.

Our signature Liaison Program and our new Resource Program, made available to the elderly, are becoming more popular. These programs include such help as lowering the cost of medications, disseminating information on public transportation, insuring the availability of Meals on Wheels, obtaining hearing aids, and locating facilities of assisted living. Should you know of anyone needing the benefits of these programs, please contact Rhonda in the LASHA office at (818) 348-3331.

Of course, Rhonda and I cannot do all this by ourselves. Please know that we do need help. LASHA is just a phone call away. Call us and offer to volunteer both your physical and financial support.
