MAKE THE ARMORY YOUR PLACE

04

As we open the 2018-2019 season, I want to welcome everyone

back to the Armory Art Center community. Our previous season

was very successful and we plan to continue on an upward track.

As we look to the future, we will continue to respond to our community

and our student’s needs with additional technology, updated class

curriculum, highly-qualified instructors, additional outreach classes in

our community, and improvements to the facilities as we continue to

grow our student base.

Since the end of last term we have purchased new kilns, added new

lockers, added new faculty, and purchased virtual reality equipment to

produce ceramics. The audition prep classes for youth are filled and our

2018 summer arts camp served 200 students more than last year. The

CityPlace venue continues to be successful and we look forward to the

launch of our new website very soon.

Outreach to our community continues to grow. The Art of the Phoenix project,

in partnership with the Human Trafficking Coalition of Palm Beach County,

continues to provide healing art therapy to those in need. The work our

instructors do with inner-city youth in partnership with Urban Youth Impact is

expanding to include internships and career focus curriculum. Our newest outreach program is BraveHeARTS,

working with veterans in our community in a cooperative effort with the Veterans Administration of Palm

Beach County. The visual arts reach so many people in many different ways. We are proud of the success of

these programs which help individuals in our community and everyone’s quality of life.

We continue to value the teaching of the traditional art forms while expanding our curriculum through

technology and cutting edge modern art experiences. Creativity is at the core of our mission.

I hope that you find our new offerings, new updates to facilities, new instructors, and the new Artists-in-

Residence exciting. We will strive to provide the most outstanding art experiences in the area. Our staff is

committed to making the Armory the leading visual arts education center of the region.

Make art, make friends, make the Armory your place!

Executive Director

“If you really want to learn how to create a bowl,

throw 100 bowls.”

That was the instruction Debra Robert heard from faculty

member Deborah Adornato and took to heart on her first day at

the Armory. Debra said, “I didn’t really know what throwing 100

bowls meant except that I was starting with a little lump of clay,

I was trying to adapt my hands and fingers with tremors and I had

insecurity.” Her brother had purchased a ceramic class to perk her up

after she lost her career and mobility due to her recent diagnosis of

multiple sclerosis.

Debra decided to make the 100 bowls as an exercise in learning about

herself with MS. To be included in the final count each bowl would be a little

better than the last one, would require a little better skill, and had to be what

her mind was telling her hands to do. Over a two year period, Debra created the

100 bowls. She learned there was a definite crisscross between her learning

curve as an artist and her MS giving her trouble. "There is really no difference” she

said. It was all part of her artist struggle. “Now I can be an artist. I can be completely

myself and can be completely comfortable with however long things take me. And that

is what the Armory gave me.”

“The beautiful thing about the

Armory Art Center is that the

atmosphere here is so

unbelievably supportive and

encouraging. I couldn’t imagine

doing this anywhere else.”

BraveHeARTS, Training emerging artists from our US Veterans, launched

in April 2018 as part of the Armory’s healing arts outreach programs

and has served 30 veterans to date. The classes are conducted by a

licensed mental health therapist or certified art therapist, and Armory

instructors.

Veterans have studied papermaking with Andy Denton, ceramics

with Ronald Shaw, and drawing & painting with Pat Crowley. The

program will offer photography with Saul Martinez and jewelry &

metalsmithing with Lisa Johnson this fall.

The program promotes the rehabilitation of military service

veterans from the VA Medical Center in West Palm Beach by

building self-esteem, nurturing talent, and developing new skills

through the visual arts. Objectives of the program are to help

veterans with being present, improving dexterity, enjoying a

sense of accomplishment, learning new skills, rediscovering

strengths, and increasing community re-entry skills.

VA Creative Arts Therapist Sara E. Windrem explains that

due to traumas many veterans don’t go to movie theaters

and can’t go to the mall because of the crowds. The

Armory has given the veterans a new comfort zone. Sara

said, “I think people naturally know how to heal with art.

Making them feel comfortable in a space and giving

them the skills and the opportunity as a starting point

is where the real healing and therapy takes place.”

Art healing programs at the Armory are funded by

private donors and grants. To support our healing

arts programs, visit amoryart.org/healingarts or

contact Sarah McKenzie Spell at (561) 832-1776

x100 to learn more.

Mark your calendar to see the work of these emerging artists.

2019 in Montgomery Hall. You can meet the veterans, instructors,

and counselors at the reception on Friday, January 18, 2019.

COLLAGE FOR PAINTERS: KEN KEWLEY’S ALTERATION SHOP KEN KEWLEYWith a little alteration, what we might have discarded can become our best work. We will paint by means of collage, beginning with pure abstraction by making shapes and arranging them into multiple compositions. We will work on reproductions of your artwork brought from home by applying painted paper to the prints to adjust the shapes. We will rework our own work, masterworks, and works of our fellow artists. Be it an object, a place, or a person, it is the underlying abstraction that must excite us and needs to be strengthened. To further understand our paintings, we will recreate them as sculptures using cardboard and then work from these.

Monday – Friday, 9:30 am – 4:30 pmFebruary 4 – 8, 2019Tuition: $675

Ken Kewley graduated from the College of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was a night watchman at the Metropolitan Museum of Art 1980-1990 and considers this a major part of his education. In New York his work has been exhibited at Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects, Lori Bookstein Fine Art, and Pavel Zoubok. He teaches workshops and lectures at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In addition he has given his workshops in art schools, universities, and museums, both in the United States and Europe. His work has been reviewed in the New York Times, New York Sun, ARTnews, and the New York Observer and included in private and public collections.  www.kenkewley.com

2D MEDIATHE FIGURE: STRUCTURE AND PAINTCATHERINE KEHOEThe figure will be the point of departure for exploration of pictorial structure. We will walk the line between accuracy and abstraction in translating the figure into two dimensions, creating images in the simplest forms: shapes and colors made of paint. This rigorous and wide-ranging analysis of the motif will help us grasp relationships between figure/object and space. Mediums will include graphite, collage and oil paint. One session will focus on the head.

Monday-Friday, 9:30 am – 4:30pmJanuary 14–18, 2019Tuition: $650

Catherine Kehoe received her BFA in painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and her MFA in painting from the School of Visual Arts, Boston University. Kehoe teaches painting and drawing at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She taught painting workshops at art centers throughout the U.S. She has also taught life drawing workshops at Harvard Medical School. Kehoe is a co-founder of Black Pond Studio in southeastern Massachusetts. Kehoe has won many awards and has been a visiting artist at numerous universities. www.blackpondstudio.com

JEWELRY/METALSMITHINGA FLOATING WORLD OF COLOR: ADAPTING ENAMEL LAYERING TO 3-D FORMSJUDY STONEIn this 3-day workshop we will enamel a small copper vessel, both inside and outside, creating 3-dimensional, non-monochromatic enamel colors through layering. We will use the sgrafitto (scratch-through) technique on an airbrushed liquid white enamel surface then apply colorful layers by sifting using a method called "wet floating' of fine enamel particles. Adding precious metal foils will be an option. We will attempt to stay loose and "painterly" through our many firings. In learning how to manipulate the enamel, you will also learn a lot about the science of enameling and subtle variations of color. Copper vessels and most materials included.

Friday – Sunday, 9:30 am – 4:30 pmFebruary 8 – 10, 2019Tuition: $420 | Material Fee: $60

Judy Stone has been enameling professionally for over 45 years. She has taught enameling throughout the US and abroad and exhibited widely. She considers herself an advocate for the medium. She has served as a board member of the Enamelist Society and the Northern California Enamel Guild. She is founder and board president of the Center for Enamel Art. She is also Enamel Department Head at The Crucible in Oakland, CA.

OBSERVATION AND IMAGINATION: PAINTING THE NATURAL WORLDAN INTENSIVE WORKSHOP ON LANDSCAPE YING LIThis workshop is for artists that paint both abstract and representational work. Students will explore techniques and concepts in painting with emphasis on individual development of style and theme. We will investigate various approaches to representational and abstract painting and the metaphorical meaning in landscape paintings. Students will discover how a basic image can be transformed into a personal statement through the process of painting and the artist’s imagination. Students are encouraged to experiment with ideas and techniques with the purpose of developing a personal expression.

S C H O O L P O L I C I E SThe Armory Art Center is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. The following policies and measures are in place so we can continue to

pursue our mission to inspire the creation and experience of art.

REFUNDSA non-refundable registration fee equal to 10% of the course tuition is included in each course registration, excluding one day workshops and Pop-Up Workshops. Students who withdraw from a course at least five (5) working days prior to the start of that course are eligible to receive a full tuition refund minus the registration fee. Students who withdraw from their course less than five (5) working days before the start of that course or once the course has started are not eligible for a refund. No refunds will be issued due to a student’s failure to attend class.

LIABILITYThe Armory will not assume liability for injuries that occur within the subject area where the student is enrolled. Upon registration for any course, the student assumes all reasonable liability from injuries related to the scope of the coursework being taught and releases the Armory Art Center from any liability claims related to any injuries and/or accidents that may occur. The student can be assured that every reasonable safety precaution is taken by the center. The Armory Art Center is not responsible for any artwork or personal items lost or stolen in the classrooms or lockers.

MEMBERSHIPMembers help to support the Armory. Only about half of the cost to run the art school comes from tuition and lab fees with the remainder of our budget needs coming in from contributions, grants, and fundraising events. We hope you will support the Armory by becoming a member and will enjoy the many benefits. See the member benefit program on www.armoryart.org to see which level is best for you and your family.

CANCELED OR MISSED COURSESThere are no make-up classes due to student illness, travel, or other reasons that are not the responsibility of the Armory Art Center. Students enrolled in courses which are canceled by the Armory due to lack of enrollment or instructor illness will receive a full refund. Every effort will be made to notify students at least 24 hours before the first class. The Armory reserves the right to substitute instructors for any of its classes at any time.

TRANSFERS In order to maintain the quality of instruction the transfer and proration policies have been changed. Students wishing to transfer from

one course to another in the same session may do so prior to the second meeting of the course and only if space is available in class. If you do not attend a class, the Armory must still pay the teacher; therefore, classes paid for but not attended are not eligible for transfer or refund.

MULTIPLE COURSE DISCOUNT:A multiple course discount cannot be combined with any other discount. This discount only applies to 4 and 8 week classes. This discount does not apply when classes are pro-rated.• Adult students will receive a 20% discount
