From the Senior Warden
The soup and shop bazaar was a great success and we could have not done it without such great help by all of you. So thank you again, because we made over $779. The Bishop came on the 16th of December and we had a wonderful brunch and nice visit. We served around 40 people. Thanks to all who made this happen. The Bishop was very impressed how we kept the church and surrounding areas maintained and felt that it was so apparent the love for our church and our pride was so visible. We are so bless to have so many wonderful and caring people at St. Mary’s. Our church members have gone beyond in providing for those less fortunate during the holidays. The news has shown Trinity Episcopal Church and how it has been there for their commu-nity after the school shootings. Let us remember the many families from the tragedies in our prayers. We are still researching the idea of putting a water guard carpet down in the Ashton House and are very thankful for those who have brought forth ideas and suggestions for this project. There is a sample available in the type we are researching. All input on this project is appreciated. I hope everyone had a great Christmas and may this New Year be a special one filled with many blessings. Thanks, Jan

From Reverend Gretchen
Our liturgical season of Epiphany is short this
year, only about four weeks. It is barely enough
time to get our personal goals and plans, our new
ideas, in order for the New Year. Remember that
the word ‘epiphany’ is from the Greek language
meaning 'manifestation' and the term is used in
our church to mean the manifestation or the ap-
pearance of God. Informally it has also come to
mean a 'bright idea' or a 'great insight'. We see it
illustrated in cartoons, characterized by the little
person who has a shining light bulb in his word
bubble instead of words, his own 'bright idea.'
We have all experienced personal epiphanies.
These are those moments, when for no reason at
all, the solution to some little problem is suddenly
realized. Perhaps it is even a quiet moment when
you suddenly realize that God is right beside you.
These mini-epiphanies are probably not dramatic
or earthshaking. They are the subtle and ordinary
experiences through which we gain a new insight
into some aspect of ourselves or of our faith. We
can feel good about the choices we have made or
we can learn a worthwhile lesson from a bad mis-
take.
We are blessed that we can find delight in simple
pleasures, discover some good in an apparently
bad situation. The beginning of the New Year is a
good time to learn to be more sensitive to the
many subtle appearances of God in our everyday
lives. Perhaps we may catch a glimpse of the
eternal here and now!
A blessed new year to everyone, and may
your lives be full of Epiphanies!!
Rev. Gretchen

Treasurer’s Report
Ole is the Pastor of the local Norwegian Lutheran Church and
Pastor Sven is the minister of the Swedish Covenant Church
across the road. One day they are seen pounding a sign into the
ground, which says:
DA END ISS NEAR!
TURN YERSELF AROUNT NOW
BAFOR IT ISS TOO LATE!
As a car speeds past them, the driver leans out his window and
yells, "Leave people alone, you Skandihoovian religious nuts!"
From the curve they hear screeching tyres and a big splash.
Shakin' his head, Rev. Ole says "Dat's da terd one dis mornin'."
"Yaa," Pastor Sven agrees, then asks, "Do ya tink maybe da sign
should yust say, 'Bridge Out”

Nurses' Notes
I know I’m not your mother, but bettcha I'm going
to sound like her . . . so here goes . . .
O.K. The holidays are over, there are no more par-
ties/potlucks/family gatherings on the calendar in
the near future and the cooking/snacking/tasting/
feasting frenzy is over (for now). Time to set a
few eating boundaries and see if we can begin to
repair the caloric excesses of the past few weeks.
First, no eating on the run. No matter how fast
you are moving, whatever you put in your mouth
has calories and too many calories mean extra
inches on the waist. Limit or eliminate eating be-
tween meals . . . 'nuff said. Five small, balanced
meals spaced 2 to 3 hours apart will stave off
hunger better than three large meals. Avoid
sweets and desserts like the plague. The same
goes for fats and fried foods. Focus on lean
meats, vegetables and fruits. Once you can get
your jeans buttoned without using a shoehorn, you
can slowly resume your pre-holiday/non weight
gaining eating habits.
Finally, a little exercise will move the process
along more quickly. Attached you will find an exer-
cise program designed specifically for Episcopali-
ans. Perhaps you will find it helpful.
Yours for good health,
Sharron Hollingsworth, R.N.
