  • ormer Pakistan President PervezMusharraf is the speaker for the 14thBoe Forum on Public Affairs in the

Center for Western Studies. PresidentMusharraf’s addressbegins at 7:30 p.m.Friday, October 2, inthe Elmen Center, located at 2505 S.Grange Avenue onthe Augustanacampus. He servedas President ofPakistan from 2001-2008, and ChiefExecutive of Pakistanfrom 1999-2001.The event is free andopen to the public.Tickets are requiredfor admission. Allseating is generaladmission by section. As a benefit of membership, CWSmembers receive advance ticketinformation.

President Pervez Musharraf occupiedwhat TIMEMagazine described as “Themost dangerous job in the world,” playinga crucial role in the global war on terror.President Musharraf has survived twoassassination attempts; rooted outmilitants in his own government; helpeddirect countless raids against Al Qaeda–both in his cities and in the mountains;and tracked Osama Bin Laden withtechnical and human intelligence. Hisastonishingly revealing memoir, In the Lineof Fire, chronicles his struggles for thesecurity and political future of his nation, with high stakes for the world at large. At the start of his presidency, politicalrestructuring was one of the four areas offocus for his government. He beganexamining why democracy remaineddysfunctional in Pakistan and addressed

the core malaise. He empowered thepeople of Pakistan at the grass roots levelthrough a local government system, whichdid not previously exist; the women of

Pakistan wereempowered by gainingreserve seats at everytier of the Parliament;multiple private TVchannels were allowedfor the first time inthe history ofPakistan, and theelectronic and printmedia beganoperatingindependently of thegovernment.Following the

September 11 terrorattacks, the UnitedStates soughtPresident Musharraf’s

support to fight the Taliban. With a visionfor a modern, democratic, non-fundamentalist Islamic Pakistan, PresidentMusharraf was one of America’s greatestallies in helping to fight the Taliban.

In the course of his seven years at thehelm of affairs in Pakistan, PresidentMusharraf traveled widely all over theworld and met many prominent leaders, and many of those leaders came toPakistan and interacted with him. Suchtop-level interactions allowed him todevelop a sense of the geo-strategicrealities of the world, and various conflictregions. It also crystallized his views andperceptions of key world issues. PresidentMusharraf articulated one such thought tobring harmony into distraught regions inthe form of a “strategy of EnlightenedModeration.” This captured theimagination of the West in particular, andwas adopted by the Islamic World forEnlightened Moderation.

  • SEPTEMBER 10-NOVEMBER 28Gary Steinley and David Allan Evans, Images of Places:Paintings and Poemsand Beth Prostrollo, MoonPhaces CeramicsArt Show & Sale

In this beautifulexhibit, striking oilpaintings by GarySteinley are pairedwith poems writtenby David Allan Evans,South Dakota’s PoetLaureate. Steinley’spaintings depictplaces, andoccasionally people,

in Northern Plains studies was conceivedand proposed by Thompson in 2003and approved by the faculty curriculumcouncil in 2007, with the assistance ofDr. Michael Mullin, NEH Chair inRegional Heritage.

The following course descriptionappears in the Interim catalog: “What

does a nearly 200-year-old documentlook like? What can we learn about theindividual and culture that produced it?Recognizing the convergence ofinterpretive strategies regarding primarysources (or cultural artifacts) across thedisciplines of history, literature, religion, and anthropology, this course makes useof the letters, diaries, and journals ofteachers, missionaries, soldiers, andsettlers who lived in the Northern Plains.

These documents also provide first-contact descriptions of NativeAmericans. Using the archives ofAugustana’s Center for Western Studies, supported by lectures, discussions, readings, and films, students will developthe theoretical and cultural contextsnecessary for preparing a scholarlyedition of an original document. Letters, diaries, and journals in popular literatureand film will also be considered.”
