INTRODUCTIONNon-verbal communication is

communication without words.

Non-verbal communication is a critical component of human communication.

Definition:

“Nonverbal communication is the process by which nonverbal behavior are used, either singly or in combination with verbal behaviors, in the exchange and interpretation of messages within a given situation or context”

Characteristics of Nonverbal Communication

1. Nonverbal communication expresses feelings, emotions and messages without the use of words.

2. Nonverbal communication is one of the five skills of emotional intelligence and helps to build strong relationship, overcome challenges and succeed in work and life.

3. Non verbal communication is strongly related to verbal communication, as it substitute for contradict, emphasize, or regulate verbal messages.

4. Nonverbal communication is continuous, because one is constantly communicating through non verbal behaviors.

IMPORTANCE OF NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION

Non verbal communication

can portray a message both verbally and with the correct body signal.

Non verbal communication has a major role in facilitating cross-cultural interactions.

Non verbal communication helps in maintaining privacy.

Kinesics:It is the study of facial expressions, postures and gestures.

Paralinguistics:It is the study of variations in pitch, speed, volume, and pauses to convey meaning.

Oculesics: It is the study of the role of eye contact in non verbal communication.

Haptics: It is the study of touching.

Proxemics: It is the study of measurable distance b/w people as they interact.

Chronemics: It is the study of use of time in non verbal communication.

• Examples of communicative gestures are waiting, saluting, handshakes, pointing, or a thumbs up.

Meaning

Cross-cultural communication is a field of study that looks at how people from different cultural backgrounds communicate, in similar and different ways among themselves.

It impacts cross-cultural communication because the norms and practices of a person will be different from the norms and practices of co-workers brought up in a different countries or societies.

The ethnic identity factor highlights the role ethnicity plays in how two co-workers from different cultures interact with one another.
