Coolin’aire Culinary Jazz Odyssey Palikū Theater Windward CC June 10 www.Coolinairegroup.com Windward Community College once again was recognized as leaders in Ocean Recreation and Safety Education across the nation. Hawai‘i Ocean Academy team members Ian Masterson and Glenn Pang were invited to return to the National Association of Aquatic Professionals Conference on February 6–9 , 2016, in Saint Pete’s Beach, Florida. The team presented a one-day Introduction to Ocean Risk Management course that began with a classroom of participants in a dynamic forum on the general lack of understanding about lifeguarding in an open-water environment versus in a pool, followed by the group brainstorming potential solutions to the challenges faced in educating the public about ocean safety principles and practices. The afternoon session focused on in-water rescue techniques used by Ocean Safety Officials in Hawai‘i. Although it was sunny and warm on the beach, participants braved the chilly 61˚ F water to practice rescues with and without a rescue tube. Masterson performed the “Hawaiian Surfboard Rescue” where he submerged his head repeatedly for over twenty seconds while participants practiced rolling their victim onto a surfboard. Even with the ‘brain freezes,’ everyone had fun and left empowered with new skills and ideas. Windward Community College once again was recognized as leaders in Ocean Recreation and Safety Education across the nation.
