Calvert County Public Schools Instructional Lesson Plan Library Media Grade: 4 Unit Title: Learning to Use Noodle Tools Length: 5-7 days Lesson Overview: During this lesson, students are given a variety of reliable print/non-print text to learn how to create a works cited page and a Notecard(s) in Noodle Tools. Students will research the topic bullying; however, the use of Noodle Tools will be the main focus. Teacher Planning and Preparation:

Explain in great detail what the teacher needs to do to prepare for the lesson. Sample statements should include language similar to:

We will build upon this lesson, teaching students how to evaluate websites, research databases vs. Google, understanding primary vs. secondary sources, etc.

Discuss differentiation of the lesson for English Language Learner● Teacher will use flexible grouping when necessary● While using Britannica School Elementary online, it offers text to speech. ● Also, Bing offers text to speech in different languages by highlight the selection/paragraph/page, right click on your

selection and choose translate with Bing. A new window will appear and you choose the language of your choice to view in writing and click the speaker/volume to hear translation.

Discuss differentiated strategies to meet the needs of all learners, to include: scaffolding, extension, and/or enrichment.● Please note the graphic organizers in the “Attachments” are color coded.

The top part focuses on citations in Noodle Tools (white)The bottom part focuses on the bullying questions (shaded grey)

● It is recommended for students to fill out the top part (Noodle Tools), but it’s up to the teacher to decide if students have/need to fill out the bottom (bullying answers) depending on their students’ needs. Some students may be able to follow verbal directions alone, while others need verbal directions and to write their answers down to help them fill out their citations online.

● Extension: Use BrainPop’s Quiz, activity page, Q&A, and FYI to further bullying lessons.

Lesson Pre- Assessment:● Show students Are You Ready to Use Your Noodle? Powerpoint.

Lesson Procedure: Day 1:Set up class in a computer lab with SMART Board accessibility

● Students will view Are You Ready To Use Your Noodle? PowerPoint Discuss PPT (researching, plagiarizing, works cite, etc)and introduce Noodle Tools at http://noodletools.com/Model the registration process for Noodle Tools using the SMART Board. Distribute Attachment 1- Noodle Tools Registration for those students who need to follow steps in printA YouTube tutorial http://bit.ly/orOhi8 is also available to view if neededRegister students and have them write their username and password in their assignment book/planner.

Day 2:Remind students about why we use Noodle Tools while researching.Anticipatory Set: Cut apart pictures in Attachment 2- Bullying Anticipation Set and place them in an envelope. (Make sure to have one envelope with 6 pictures per group)Have students discuss the pictures in small groups and then as a whole group.Students should infer that their research topic is about bullying.Inform students their research begins now using a dictionary (print source). Using Smart Board, review/discuss Reference Source (Starter) at http://www.noodletools.com/noodlebib/intermediateScreen.php#tn3-0-19-0-fsReview: What is a Reference Source? How do I cite a print or e-reference book? Focus: Title Page: Author/Contributor, Type of Reference Source (print vs. non-print), Title, Publisher, Publication City, Year, etc.Pass out Attachment 3: Noodle Tools/Dictionary/PrintStudents use the print dictionary to fill out the activity sheet.Teacher will MODEL the dictionary citation in Noodle Tools with participation from class.Students can follow along using Steps to Create a Citation in Noodle Tools in Attachment 3After modeling, have students move to their own computers to enter citation in NoodleTools (guide students with verbal and written instructions)Ask students why it is important to cite information to close out lesson.

Remind students our focus is Noodle Tools citation and we will now learn how to use a NotecardThen, review dictionary citation on MLA Works Cited pagePoint out media type (w/symbol), citation (author, title, etc), Edit and NotecardsModel how to create a notecard using the dictionary citation. Title/Main idea (if using multiple notecards for the same citation, it must have a different title), Direct Quotation, Paraphrase or summary, and My Ideas (if needed)Students will create a notecard for their next citation.

Step B:Review dictionary citation and tell students they will create another reference citation, but using a database.Pass out Attachment 4: Noodle Tools/Encyclopedia/DatabaseStudents will visit http://school.eb.com/Must have username/passwordStudents will hover over Elementary and search bullying (Level 1 for elementary). Allow students to browse website.Guide students to write answers in Noodle Tools section: Focus on Medium, Database Publisher, Date of Access, URL (some URLs—skip if necessary), and Title of Encyclopedia Students will enter citation information in Noodle Tools (follow “Steps to Create a Citation” Attachment 3 if needed)

(Note: Teacher’s discretion to have students write out answers)Guide students back to Level 1 and read/listen to Types of Bullying and list at least 2 examples of bullying.Read/Listen to Bullies and Victims and list a fact(s) for each.Students will write answers to bullying questions on Attachment 4: Noodle Tools/Encyclopedia/Database.

Lesson Closure:Students will print out their works cited page (dictionary (print), encyclopedia (database) and website]Students will take the information they researched about bullying to create a poster, brochure, diary entry, etc. Posters & brochures will be advertised around school for National Bullying Awareness Month in OctoberStudents may work alone or with a partnerStudents may use technology to help create their final product.
