July Message from Board President Richard Stoll
This is the last message for the 2018-2019 Board year. We have had a lot of
fun with the great events that were put on, some from the Board, some from
Residents or neighbors. We look forward to a new year. I have seen a lot of new
faces volunteering to help put these events on.
Right now, we still need a Secretary and a board member-at-large for the
new Board. Also more importantly is the need for a Breeze editor. Voting will be
on July 18. If you are interested start a write in campaign for the position. You can
ask for help from Larry Cornell, Nomination Committee Chairman, or myself.
So you can get your calendar started for the 2019-2020 Board year we have
a couple of things already in the works. Thanks to Art Tipton and his team, there
will be a Casino Night on August 24. Also, at the first General meeting in August
(8th) we will be discussing the events for the year. If you have an event you want,
please come and present your idea at the meeting.
We are working with Management to get better lighting in the Tropics.
Some ideas have been tossed around. By the time you read this message we will
see a budget for next year. It will give us a better idea of what Management
thinks are the priorities at the Tropics.
We have a Bocce Ball Tournament fast approaching. If you are interested in
getting involved get hold of me.
We are not having an Appreciation Dinner this year. I want to thank all the
Board members and the volunteers that made our events a success. The people
that make sure you get your Breeze are invaluable; in some parks one must pick it
up at the office. While I’m thanking people, we really must thank Miguel, Jorge
and Juan Carlos for making this park so gorgeous. I know Nancy and Cathy are
working hard to help make this the most wanted park to live in. I know we don’t
always agree with them, but they know more than we do about legality. We can’t
forget the tireless effort Louise does to keep the Clubhouse clean.
Looking forward to seeing you all at the 4th of July Cook-Out on the 4th. We
have one more Breakfast this year. Don’t forget to Vote on July 18.

MILLENNIUM MEMO “One Cat Just Leads to Another” Ernest Hemingway You aren’t still feeding our local wildlife, are you? We’ve talked about this before. I thought we agreed with each other—and with the City, every nature expert and your neighbors—that leaving food out for stray cats, raccoons, scorpions, skunks and other undocumented Tropics fauna was a bad idea. I get it: you think you are feeding cute, hungry, harmless felines or raccoons, but once word gets out that you’re providing an outdoor buffet, others will join the fun. Skunks just make a stink but raccoons cause all sorts of problems—not just the obvious damage, but their feces can contain roundworm eggs, which can…well, you don’t really want me to relate what I’ve learned about that, do you? There’s more: last month we had to call Animal Control to trap a sick raccoon that had been seen wandering around. The Officer told us that if a sick animal eats or drinks out of a bowl, that disease is likely to spread to other animals. We don’t have a problem with stray cats or raccoons in Orange County—coyotes take care of that problem—but your neighbors have been complaining about problems your kind-heartedness is causing them. With that in mind…please stop leaving food out—either that, or offer to pay for your neighbor’s raccoon damage. Which reminds me…did you hear about the vulture that brought 2 dead raccoons onto a plane? The Stewardess stopped him, saying: “I’m sorry, but only one carrion is allowed per passenger.” In Other News…
Have you received your 2019 Income Certification Form yet? Last year your Certs generated a property tax exemption of $508K—every penny of which was reinvested back into The Tropics. You see how important it is for you to return your Certification promptly, don’t you?
At the suggestion of your Board, new locks were installed at the Pool, Laundry & Bathrooms (cost: $2,900). Let’s hope this deters outsiders from using the facilities. We’re also adding money in the new Budget for more Cameras.
I thought my recent lecture on Speeding was pretty effective…and then I heard that one driver plowed into a resident’s trash can last month, while another damaged someone’s yard. You know you’re making me look bad, don’t you?
Don’t feed the animals, watch your speed, be respectful of your neighbor’s trash can, turn in your Income Cert…and have a Safe & Sane 4th of July! George Turk
Manager’s Corner for July 2019 Enjoy the 4th of July Barbecue. The office will be closed for the holiday. Please remember that fireworks are not allowed in the Tropics – do it somewhere safe and not in our park. Fire danger is extremely high, especially with the warmer weather. Be sure to attend the Residents’ Club meeting on July 18th to vote for your favorite candidates to carry on the leadership for the next year. Be involved and come to the meetings to state your choices on various matters that concern all residents. Financial Assistance information from Millennium Housing has been mailed to all residents to reapply and we have extra copies in the office for those that want to apply for the first time. As time permits, either Kathy or I can assist you with any questions you have and help you prepare the forms due by July 31. The annual mandatory Income certifications have also been mailed to all residents and they are due by July 15. We had 100% participation last year and looking forward to the same this year. Alameda County Flood Control will have goats grazing along the channel bank again this year. A goat herder will be on site to ensure their care and safety. This is a cost-effective and sustainable environmental alternative to controlled burns, mechanical cutting, and chemical herbicides to manage local vegetation. Kathy Vincent will be enjoying her 6th year working in the office this month. It has been a pleasure to have her assistance and friendship. Good going Kathy – You rock.

Poetry in America
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome, her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
--Emma Lazurus
