An appellation is a defined geographic wine-growing region that
is officially recognized for its unique climate, soil, elevation andother physical features that together have a unique impact on its
wines. An appellations boundaries may cross county and state
borders because it is nature that creates its geographic limits, not the
government. However, the US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade
Bureau (TTB) does get involved in making these appellations official
and legal designations, which can be helpful information to wine
consumers when reading a wine label. A TTB-approved region is
known as an American Viticultural Area (AVA). As of January 2010,
there are a total of 198 AVAs designated throughout the US. The
oldest AVA in California is Napa Valley.
AVAs also can be sub-divided into smaller areas that are alsoknown for their own unique soil conditions or microclimates. Taking
Napa Valley as an example, there are currently 15 AVAs within the
Napa Valley AVA, with names like Stags Leap District and Carneros.
The newest of Napa Valley AVAs is Calistoga. The TTB specifies that
at least 85% of a wines grapes must be grown in the AVA specified
on the label. In California, when no single AVA is the origin of 85%
the grapes of a given wine, the label may indicate a larger AVA that
encompasses all the various sources, if
possible. Otherwise, it can indicate California as the source of thgrapes. In a case such as this, the producer may identify on the re
label the different origins of the grapes that make up that wine.
As wine consumers experience the wines of different AVAs,
reading the AVA designation on a wine label is like a having virtu
taste of whats inside. Because winemakers and wine enthusiasts
know that unique soils and climate conditions produce unique
wines, an AVA designation indicates a certain consistency of style
that these geographic features have produced in wine over a long
period of time. In addition, as AVAs are sub-divided into even
smaller defined areas, it follows that the wine style gets even more
specific, although a wine from a small AVA is not a guarantee thatwill be of superior quality to a broader AVA.
Len Napolitano lives in San Luis Obispo County and is certified in wine by the Society of Wine Educators,
Wine & Spirits Education Trust and Chicago Wine School and continually gains knowledge from his frequent co
with California winemakers. More information is on his website, www.wineology.com.

TheSkinny The Wine Garage is all about the juice. Its also about having fulike a kid in a candy store. The Wine Garage is, literally, a former gas station
Todd, the wine buyer, travels far and wide to find top-shelf, affordably price
wines. Inside, youll find more than 200 different labels neatly arranged in c
on the floor and an engaging staff who are friendly, attentive and most impo
tantly, they know their wines.
Buzz Despite its funky space, the Wine Garage is a wine lovers best friend.
Reminiscent of visiting your favorite record store (yes, kids, once upon a tim
thats where you had to buy your music), the fun is going through all the cas
and finding something youve never heard of. All the wines have been test
driven by the staff, so, whatever you select, you wont be disappointed.
Value Ultimately, the Wine Garage is about value. Its no secret that in Nap
Valley, its difficult to score a highly rated red for less than $65, but the Wine
Garage manages to do it all the time. The staff takes great pride hunting dowunusual and lesser-known, limited-production wines and passing their hagg
finesse on to us.
Ten-second summary Nothing in this hip hideaway is more than $25 (with
few under $15)! The Wine Garage is stocked with premium, small-lot wines
that you wont find at BevMo, Trader Joes or your local wine store (plus, the
a better job storing their wines at the correct temperature).
Best bets In addition to all the labels the Wine Garage represents, they also
produce their own lip-smacking blends. My in-house favorites are: 2009 Joy
Ride White, 2008 Russian River Syrah, 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet, 2008
Chihuahua Cabernet and 2006 Hillside Cabernet.
Under-the-radar Go old-school with half-gallon jugs filled while you wait u
their specifically designed service station nozzles. Not only are the wines delcious (and affordable), the jug is crazy fun conversation at the table. Its also
cool gift.
Secrets For the next few weeks, receive an additional ten percent off the
already low prices when you purchase six bottles. Twenty percent on a case.
Better yet, the Wine Garage has the BEST wine club in the valley and they
ship just about everywhere.
Insider If youre a serious wino, get on the inside track for ultra exclusive d
by hooking up with the Wine Garage on Twitter and Facebook (wine club
members get first crack to cream-of-the-crop finds).

Freestone Vineyards Guest Center is now open seven days a week
during summer months. The Freestone Vineyards Guest Center,
located just five miles from the Pacific Ocean in the cool climate
Sonoma Coast hamlet of Freestone, has traditionally closed year-
round on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The summer months leading up to the fall harvest are generally
our busiest. We continually receive mid-week appointment requests
from our Private Collection members and Bay Area visitors trying to
plan day trips to wine country, said Freestone Vineyards Guest Center
Manager, Brad Schneider. Extending our hours seemed the logical
solution to satisfy our customers.
The Freestone Vineyards Guest Center is now open Monday
through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., through September 30,
2011. They will move back to a Thursday through Monday schedule,
from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., on October 1, 2011. The expected summer
schedule for 2012 will have the Guest Center open seven days a week,June through September. A list of upcoming Freestone Vineyards
events and directions to the Guest Center are available by visiting
www.freestonevineyards.com or by calling (707) 874-1010.
Freestone Vineyards was founded in 1999 by the Phelps family and
management team of Joseph Phelps Vineyards when they purchased
100 acres of vineyard property in Freestone. Today, with its state-of-
the-art, gravity flow winemaking facility, the goal at Freestone isproduce world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that is region
distinctive and authentically reflects the structure, balance
complexity of Sonoma Coast terroir. Freestone Vineyards produ
about 12,000 cases of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay annually under
Freestone and Fogdog labels. For more information about Freest

If you have never traveled this stretch of
road Highway 121 from Sonoma County
to the Napa Valley (or going from Napa to
Sonoma), there is little doubt that you will
almost gasp with surprise, for their, sitting on
a low rise, backed by vineyards and with
gardens in the front as you round a bend,
because there sits the California version of a
French winery chateau. Domaine Carneros is
certainly one of the most impressive struc-
tures you are likely to run across no matter
how much time you spend here. Built by the
fabled French Champagne house Taittinger
in 1988, it is carefully modeled after the
18th-century Chateau de la Marquetterie.
To get to the tasting room, visitors drawn
from around the globe go up a long set of
steps; this is one of the most popular back-drops for photographs in Napa County, and
rightly so. Continue past immaculate topiary
and a water spout depicting two rams onto
the wrap-around terraces. Its the perfect spot
to enjoy a glass of wine as you settle in, in the
shade of a white umbrella, cooled by the
breeze off the San Pablo Bay a few miles to
the northwest
Inside it is light-wood paneling, a crystal
chandelier, polished marble floors and a
large portrait of Madame Pompadour. To the
right is a spacious and friendly tasting room
with French doors. The vineyards you look
out over include Chardonnay and Pinot Noir
varietals, the two classic components in
sparkling wine, both here and in France.
Domaine Carneros started producing small
quantities of fine Estate Pinot Noir almost
two decades ago, and in 2003 they
completed a dedicated Pinot Noir facility that
incorporated the largest solar collection
system on any winery in the world.
Today, the winery produces sparkling
wines in three traditional styles: Brut, Brut
Ros and Blanc de Blancs. This is in addition
to those offerings from the Pinot Noir
program where they produce three different
Pinots: the fruity and fresh Avant-Garde, a
rich and intricately balanced Domaine
Carneros, and the intense Famous Gate(when you visit youll understand where the
name originated).
Domaine Carneros is one of the few
wineries where you can relax and enjoy table
service either in the salon or on the terrace
overlooking those vine covered hills. Their
wines may be tasted in flights, by the glass or
by the bottle. Additionally, charcuterie,
smoked salmon or caviar and artisan cheese
plates matched to the wines are available.
The food and wine connection se

When wine and food blend perfectly to reflect the
beauty and charm of Sonoma Valley, its an unforgettable
experience. Thats exactly what you can expect from a
visit to St. Francis Winery and Vineyards.
And now that St. Francis has added a two-acre
Sustainable Vegetable Garden to its 600 acres of estate
vineyards, it is the first winery in Sonoma Valley to offer
visitors an authentic farm-to-table wine and food pairing
experience.
Planted just steps away from the Winerys kitchenand dining room, the new Sustainable Vegetable Garden
uses organic farming practices to produce more than 75
varieties of vegetables, berries and fruits. St. Francis
Executive Chef Dave Bush harvests seasonal selections
from the garden to create his multicourse wine and food
pairings, offered five days a week in the Winerys newly
renovated dining room.
The garden gives me an opportunity to create wine
and food pairings using the freshest seasonal ingredients
grown right outside our kitchen door, Bush says. I have everything I could possibly
want, from lettuces, greens and beets to multiple varieties of heirloom tomatoes, applesand pears. The list goes on and on.
In addition to supplying seasonal ingredients to the Winerys pairing programs, the
garden will be part of a community supported agriculture (CSA) program. The CSA wi
allow as many as 50 Sonoma County families to have access to the Winerys high qualit
produce and to some of the honey produced from the sites five beehives. Some of the
produce will also be sold to Sonoma County restaurants and at local farmers markets.
For more than 35 years, St. Francis Winery in Sonoma Valley has hand-crafted fruit

role. Executive Chef Bush heads up the onsite kitchen with a deep
understanding of food and a unique approach to wine and food
pairing.
My philosophy about wine and food pairing is that there are no
rules, Bush says. I like to take risks. My ultimate goal is to surprise
people and for them to leave with a different view of how wine and
food work together.
To accomplish that, Bush offers a seasonally changing menu ofcreative small plates that enhance the estate wines poured with each
dish. Each seating is guided by a wine and food pairing host who
creates a relaxing, fun and memorable wine country experience that
showcases the very best Sonoma County has to offer.
Seated wine and food pairings are offered two or three times a
day, five days a week, in the Winerys beautiful new dining room,
featuring a large circular table and spectacular views of estate vine-
yards and Hood Mountain. Reservations are strongly recommended
and can be made by calling 1-888-675-WINE. (See page for
current menu and seating schedule.)
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, St. Francis also offers the option of
relaxing on the outside patio with a glass of wine or a flight of winespaired with a selection of charcuterie, featuring local cheeses, house-
made pats and rillettes. The tasting room is open daily from 10
a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Visitor Centers warm and welcoming hospi-
tality staff can explain the various tasting options available.
St. Francis Winery & Vineyards is located at 100 Pythian Road
at Highway 12 in Santa Rosa. For additional information, call 1-888-
675-WINE or visit the winerys website at www.stfranciswinery.com.
St. Francis is hosting several events this summer and fall, including
a lobster feed for club members on Saturday, August 20, and the
annual Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 2.

If you havent been to Celadon to savor some of their award-winning cuisine,
Chef Marco Uribe has provided a great recipe that will bring a little bit of his
style to your table. This dish has previously graced their menu and will again this
summer as it is a customer favorite. Citrus and seafood always go together andwhen the scallops are perfectly cooked, they melt in your mouth. Since they are
so light and delicate, this flavor combination really complements the light, crisp
taste of Pinot Grigio. Not only is this wine used in the recipe, but the spicy, citrus
notes also make for a perfect pairing. This is a refreshing dish that is perfect for
the upcoming months.
Togarashi is a peppery Japanese spice mix with a hint of mandarin orange
peel. Another Japanese ingredient, yuzu juice has an intense citrus flavor which
balances the peppery crusted scallops. Pinot Grigio highlights these flavors in the
ginger-yuzu beurre blanc. The wine has a refreshing tartness that gives way to a
tangy but delicate finish. Pinot Grigio also lends itself to pecorino cheese, crab
cakes, sauted petrale or roasted chicken. If you would rather experience this pairing first-hand, then visit Celadon in
the historic downtown Napa Mill Complex. Their seasonally influenced menu
features flavors from the Mediterranean, Asia and the Americas. Their menus
consist of small and big plates and feature such variety that everyone will be
able to find their perfect meal. Dine indoors in their casual dining room or
outdoors on their lush courtyard. Lunch is served Monday through Friday from
11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. An afternoon menu follows from 2:30 to 5 p.m.
during the week. Dinner is served daily from 5 p.m. Reservations are recom-
mended and can be made online at www.celadonnapa.com or by calling (707)

in the Sonoma wine country north of San Francisco. The setting and facilities at Cline Cellars
winery are perfect for a summer afternoon, listening or dancing to many of the San Francisco
Bay Area's finest Dixieland/Ragtime/Blues musicians. Attendance has grown over the last four-
teen years to over 900 jazz and wine enthusiasts. This event is actually a reincarnation of the
old Oakley Wine & Jazz Festival, produced by Fred Cline and Ken Keeler from 1985-1990.
Cline Cellars was then located in Oakley, CA, just down the street from Ken's farm (now a vine-
yard producing grapes for Cline). Three of this year's bands were involved in the Oakley events.
Cline Cellars is located at 24737 Arnold Drive, Sonoma CA 95476, four miles north of Infi-

the next level and create their own wine theresJudds Hill MicroCrush, right in the heart of NapaValley.
Named as the place to custom crush yourwine in Napa Valley, by Food and Wine magazine,Judds Hill was started by the Finkelstein family, who began their own winemaking story in the early70s, as real life garagistes. Their first productionarea was their garage in a canyon in SouthernCalifornia and it was there they first learned abouthandcrafted wines in the purest sense.
In 1979, they purchased a ranch just south of
St. Helena, Napa Valley and began growing grapesand making wine for real. Art and Bunnie Finkel-stein built Whitehall Lane Winery, made somepretty great wines there, and sold it several yearslater. Soon, Art and Bunnie, along with son, Juddand daughter-in-law, Holly, began crafting smalllots of ultra-premium Napa Valley wine from theirestate vineyard under the Judds Hill label.
In the early 90s, they pioneered MicroCrush togive grape growers and wine enthusiasts thechance to make their own custom handcraftedwine. Today, that facility is state-of-the-art, but thegaragiste spirit is alive and well.
For wine lovers of all levels, here is a realchance to learn and experience what being a wine-maker is truly like from the folks that coined theterm MicroCrush more than 20 years ago.
Youll work closely with the Judds Hill wine-making team, choosing all the components (fromfruit to labels, barrels and bottles even) that reflectyour own expression of wine. Charles Krug/ Peter Mondavi WineryCelebrates 150th Anniversary at
Tasting on the Lawn, September 10On Saturday, September 10, Charles Krug Winery and the Peter
Mondavi Sr. Family will toast the seasons grape harvest at the annualTasting on the Lawn from 2 to 5 p.m. This years event will also cele-
brate a significant milestone the 150th anniversary of Napa Valleys
first winery.Founded in 1861, Charles Krug represents the birthplace of the
Napa Valley wine industry. The festivities will take place on the estatesexpansive Great Lawn in the shade of heritage oaks and surrounded by
vineyards, a location unequaled by any other outdoor space in Napa
Valley, and inside the estates recently restored 1881 Carriage House.
A summary of the days events:
Visitors will enjoy tastings of Charles Krugs current releases, fromSauvignon Blanc to Cabernet Sauvignon, including the winerysLimited Release and Family Reserve wines. Tastings will be paired with
a moveable feast selected especially to complement the wines by
Knickerbockers Catering. Three complete food and wine areas spreadthroughout the park-like estate will add to the festive atmosphere.
In addition, chefs from several acclaimed Napa Valley restaurants
will be on hand for the anniversary event, serving samples of theirspecialties to pair with Charles Krug wines.
To add to the ambiance, actors portraying Charles Krug and hiswife Carolina Bale Krug will stroll the Great Lawn in period costume,
presenting vignettes from their lives 150 years ago.
Two opportunities will offer a rare taste of Napa wine history thatguests will get nowhere else. There will be special pourings from
magnums of Charles Krugs 150th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon,
and a rare tasting of older vintage wines from the estates cellar (addi-tional fee applies). These premium tastings will take place in the
Carriage House ballroom. The ballroom boasts a soaring cathedralceiling and stunning period chandeliers, and was recently refinished
with old-growth redwood recovered from historic wine tanks.
All guests will have the opportunity to enjoy wine tasting directlyfrom the barrels and meet members of the Peter Mondavi Family, who
will be on hand to sign bottles for guests.Live music on the main stage will provide a backdrop for all of the
festivities.
Tastings on the Lawn were started in 1951 as an enjoyable venuewhere the family could meet their customers, and educate visitors
about fine wine; in the United States at that time, the wine industry
was known more for jug wines and not varietal wines. This CharlesKrug tradition is believed to have been the first wine celebration of its
kind, and went on to inspire myriad other wine country tasting events.Lawn chairs, picnic blankets and straw hats are encouraged for the
September 10 event. Tickets are available online ($40 before August 1)
at www.charleskrug.com. As always, admission for members of thewine club is complimentary, by calling Wine Club Manager Colin
Wright at 1-888-747-5784, preferably by August 1.

Even owner Ronda Schaer could not have
envisioned that her affection for the little
village of Yountville would someday blossom
into a full-blown love affair. This is a town
that you can get your arms around. Twenty
years ago she did just that. With the opening
of her now famous art gallery, RAS Galleries,
Ronda has embraced her community and
graced it with one of its most successful and
admired businesses.
It was her passion for art, and glass in
particular, that moved Ms. Schaer to open a
gallery. I have always been drawn to glass.
But it was the work of American glass
artists that really captured her heart. Repre-
senting more than two hundred American
artists, the gallery has become one of the
premiere venues in which to experience the
drama, imagery and vision of this artistic
medium.
The gallery also features the work of some
extremely gifted fine artists, with original oil
paintings from artists throughout California
and the Pacific Northwest, as well as the
Eastern Seaboard and point in between. The
whimsical chefs of ceramic artist, Cynthia
Hipkiss are also a favorite of collectors.
Says Ronda, I created RAsgalleries with a
singular focus on Original American Art,
primarily Art Glass, my personal passion.
And Im proud that after twenty years in the
same Yountville, Napa Valley location,
passion remains.
RASgalleries is located at 6540 Was
ington Street, next to Bouchon in Yountv
and is open daily from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m
Tuesday by appointment. Phone (707) 94

In its 37 years of showcasing the abundance of harvest and SonomaCountys passion for world-class wines and the people who make
them, the Harvest Fair has entertained, educated, and just plain
delighted hundreds of thousands of people from Northern California, and around the globe. And for 2011, the fairs board has retooled key
elements to enliven the festivities and give people even more reason to
gather with friends at this premier event.
An Evening of Sonoma Countys Most Inspired Food and Wine
Among the major innovations is a new Grand Tasting event onFriday, September 30. Attendees will be first to partake in the medal-
winning wines and cuisine. Theyll also get to mingle with key winery
and restaurant representatives (often owners, winemakers, chefs, andother top positions), and hear insiders stories about ingredients,
philosophies and inspiration.Over the years, the board of directors of the Sonoma County
Harvest Fair has been listening to how Sonoma County wants to cele-
brate the abundance of our harvest, and the changes weve institutedreflect the wonderful input weve received, said Marie Gewirtz, pres-
ident of the Sonoma County Harvest Fair Board.
The Grand Tasting is 5:30 to 8 p.m. on opening day of the three-day Harvest Fair. Tickets are $60 in advance, $70 at the door (or $50
each when purchased in blocks of 10 or more), and include unlimitedtastings of the award-winning wines and cuisine, as well as entrance
to the Harvest Fair that day.
September 30 through October 2, the Sonoma County HarvestFair gives locals and visitors alike an opportunity to immerse them-
selves in Sonoma Countys rich agricultural roots and traditions.
Traditional Harvest Fair favorites include the professionally judgedwine competition, abundant tastings of beloved varietals, a competi-
tion among gifted local food producers and purveyors, the wildlypopular World Championship Grape Stomp and many other family-
friendly, farm-oriented activities and exhibits.
The Harvest Fair celebrates the diversity and unparalleled qualityof the wines, food, and cuisine that define Sonoma County. This new
Grand Tasting is a chance to sample all in one place the very bestof what the county has to offer at a newly designed event that will
serve as the kickoff to this years fair, said Gewirtz.
Honoring Those Who Turn Rich Soils to Heavenly Wines
Also new to the 2011 Harvest Fair will be the Sonoma CountyWine Awards, a wine industry event celebrating the areas best of the
best. Unfolding September 24, it will culminate three days of judging
of more than 1,000 wines by 25 judges from throughout the UnitedStates and Asia. Industry representatives will announce the sweep-
stakes winners. This really is an evening for recognizing Sonoma Countys world-
class wines and the people who make them, said Honore Comfort,
also a member of the Harvest Fair Board and executive director of the
Sonoma County Vintners. The new Wine Awards celebration crean opportunity to honor our winemakers and growers, and sa
their hard work and contributions to our community.
Unsurpassed Quality
The Harvest Fair is the largest regional wine competition in United States, and celebrates Sonoma Countys heritage as a wo
renowned agricultural and wine-producing region. AccordingComfort, Its the only event in California with a professional com
tition solely for the regions wines, judged by an international pane
experts. The three-day schedule is bursting with exciting activities for
ages. Along with the events mentioned above, there will be farm a
harvest Ag-tivities for children and adults, wine seminars, cdemonstrations, microbrew tasting
