PRESIDENT’S REPORT First, let me say “Congratulations” to

Bridget and Greg on their successful elections as MLA’s for the governing party. We at Nord-Bridge have worked extensively with both MLA’s. Now, for the first time in Lethbridge, we will all be able to work together. We have spent a lot of time during the past five years searching for answers to the core funding issue faced by all senior centres in our Province. I am hoping we will be able to continue where we left off in that lobby process now that the election has been settled!

The baby boomers are coming to Nord-Bridge. New mem-berships are being taken out regularly. We now have more mem-bers than ever before. One main attraction has been our Fitness 55 Club. For the first quarter of the year our daily attendance is at an all time high of 14,245 visits, 10% higher than last year. Nord-Bridge...The Friendly Centre...is a very busy place!

Our Board and Executive have given Randy approval to prepare a bid for the opportunity to co-host the 2013 Alberta Gov-ernment Senior Services (Grey Matters) Conference in Lethbridge. If we are successful, this will be the first time this provincial confer-ence will be held outside of the two major cities of Edmonton and Calgary! Remember – Keep Active and Stay Connected!

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Greetings Members,

As all members are aware, the Provincial Election occupied much Dining Room and coffee conversation over the month of April 2012. This was also the case at Nord-Bridge Seniors, where your Administra-tion and Board reviewed how we could provide equal access to our Centre and membership for all candidates and parties. Of course, Nord-Bridge needs to be able to work on be-half of the needs and issues of senior citizens with whichever party the voters finally place at the helm of leadership. Our policy is to also speak clearly on seniors issues and needs with all parties, as they fill the important role of providing a democratic voice for all Albertans. There-fore, as it became clear the Provincial election was at hand, we communicated in writing on March 23 to all local candi-dates running for MLA in both Lethbridge East and West rid-ings. Nominees contacted included those from Progressive Conservative, Liberal, New Democrat, Wildrose, and Alberta parties. All candidates were offered the same access and opportunities at our Centre. These included:

Candidates could advertise in the April issue of this NEWSLETTER. Six (6) candidates, representing three (3) parties took advantage of this option. Thanks are ex-pressed to those candidates, and to our advertising sales volunteer Bob Bunn who followed-up with personal con-tacts with the candidates. The job was done quickly.

Candidates were invited to place literature on a central distribution table within the Centre. Most did.

Candidates were invited to attend a MEET & GREET held to benefit information exchange and to allow members to meet each candidate. The activity, held April 12, (continued on back cover)

SPRING IS HERE and that means plenty of outdoor activities including yard work, which requires lots of physical activi-ty providing good exercise for our muscles and joints. Speaking of exercise, I finally made it into the gym thanks to a senior member who is on an exercise program designed by her therapist. My octogenarian friend is dedi-cated and committed to stay active, healthy, and live long-er. Her good attitude motivates me to get into the gym with her three days a week, and I do feel better after a good workout. It sure helps when you can exercise with someone. So get an exercise buddy and hit the gym, or take a walk.

Activities are still in full swing here at the Centre. We recently held an open house to recruit and appreciate ALL VOLUNTEERS. Volunteers are the back bone of a suc-cessful organization like Nord-Bridge. If you would like to learn more about volunteer opportunities, ask a Board member, any of our staff, or any volunteer. There’s a job for everyone!

In closing, I will be planning some travel outings but…I NEED DRIVERS. I would like all of our registered driv-ers and any member who would like to volunteer as a driv-er to come and see me. I need your assistance to schedule trips during the spring and summer. You DO NOT need a special license to drive our bus. Our local and day trips mean so much to our members who can’t drive; and every-one always has fun!

Programmer’s Report by David Ng

I had the opportunity last week to play my first round of golf this year! My wife thought I was crazy for booking a tee time at 6:45 a.m. but it was a great time to play! The cool morning air and dew still on the fairway grass was breath taking. Now our golf pro-gram won’t be booking tee times that early, but if you are interested ask to speak with Harry at the front desk prior to Tuesdays to find out where the group will be golfing that week. I would like to thank Norene Irwin and Woody Neely for stepping into the vacant convener position for Carpet Bowling. Both Norene and Woody are regular Carpet Bowlers and have been playing for numerous years. They welcome all members new and old to come out and join them every Wednesday and Friday at 9:30 am in the Multi-Purpose Hall. Our Line Dancing group has grown in num-bers and will now have an earlier start time on Wednesdays. They will now start at 11:00 a.m. If you would like more infor-mation on this class stop in any Wednesday and have a chat with the convener Della Howg. Finally, some program cancellations for the month of May: Social Dance will be cancelled on May 1st. Clogging will be cancelled on May 15th.

We’ve been getting a good turnout of 20-24 peo-ple each Wednesday when we play from 1 to 3 p.m. Afterwards we stay for coffee, tea and conversation in the Dunford Diner. I hope to see more of you participate. Our In-house Tour-nament will take place on May 23 starting at 9 a.m. We will break for lunch and resume play in the after-noon. Thursday mornings if we are able,

We sit around a row of tables,

Our minds are stretched a little bit, As with this fine group we do sit.

The purpose of these gatherings,

Are not to play or to even sing,

We’ll laugh at funny stories told, That to us are as pure as gold.

People think we are not stable,

But we will write when we are able, For we are Mind Joggers you see,

We are not here to just have some tea.

One will write a good horse type tale,

Another relates what came by mail, A poem recited on the breeze,

There is discourse on the largest sneeze.

There are funny stories that are told,

Of bold experiences both new and old, They jog our minds about what we’ve done,

Some bring tears to the eyes of everyone.

We end the meeting with raves all around,

See you all again we’re homeward bound, We have told a tale and jogged the mind,

So another great story we will find.

CASINO REPORT

Every three years we are fortunate to be able to participate in the distribution of Casino funds, a program run by Alberta Gaming & Liq-uor Commission for the benefit of registered non-profit organizations. One stipulation of our participation is that we provide volunteers to work at the Casino for 2 full business days. This January we participated again in the first quarter pool (last time was in 2009 and the next one will be early in 2015) and for our ef-forts we will receive $33,409.35. We extend thanks to Volunteer Co-ordinator Mary Insley and our volunteer team of: JoAnn Adams, Mike Bennett, Diane Bennett, Bob Bunn, Stan Dean, Jim Hahn, June Hood, Len Hutchinson, Kathy Ludwig, Eleanor Mehrer, Clay Olsen, Christine Rollack, and Donna Takeda. We also thank those less benevolent but essential contributors who gambled at the Casino during the first quar-ter of this year. We thank you for your “donations” and hope that it is some consolation to you that your money went to a worthy and appreciative organization.

OUTREACH REPORT by Mary Potvin

Our April “Spring Fling Easter Bonnet Party” was a great success with 91 guests and 18 volunteers. Our judges had a very difficult time choosing winners be-cause there were so many wonderful hats. Most crea-tive went to Paul Walker from Carmangay; Fanciest went to Barbara from Sunrise Village; and Funniest to Bob Brown of Good Samaritans. Our Easter Bunny door prize went to Wilma Boe of Blue Sky Lodge. Everyone enjoyed playing “musical egg” with Lin-da Liptak setting the pace on piano, card bingo and the lovely lunch prepared and served by our volunteers. Nord-Bridge will host two very important social func-tions during May. On Tuesday, May 1st, we will pre-sent “A Tribute to Miners Memorial Banquet 3” This third annual event promises to be every bit as enter-taining as the prior two events and includes Roast Beef Supper, Open Bar, Musical Entertainment, Galt Museum, and, #8 Mine Society Presentations, and a Raffle Draw. Tickets are $20. On Friday, May 11th we’ll host our “Annual Mother’s Day Luncheon”. That menu features Chicken Cordon Swiss. All of the ladies will receive a gift. Tickets are $8.50. PAST TRIPS: On April 12th, a group of 14 people, includ-ing the driver, Linda Liptak, made an enjoyable journey to the wee town of Foremost (1st ever trip) to attend their annual theatre production “Bingo Spells Murder”. The trip was filled with laughter and conversation and everyone enjoyed the delicious roast beef dinner. Foremost will be

celebrating its Centennial August 2-5, 2013. On April 26th, a bus full of passengers en-joyed a shopping excursion to Calgary Chinook Mall and stopped at the Saskatoon Berry Farm for pie. Thanks to our driver, Clay Olsen, and new member hostess, Ali Freng for an awesome time.

Seniors’ Activity Tax Credit will support all seniors Lethbridge, AB - A Progressive Conservative government will con-tinue its commitment to seniors with a new Seniors’ Activity Tax Credit. The $500 per year credit will support all seniors to pursue healthy, active lifestyles. “It’s the kind of program that produces real outcomes for all Alber-tans. This tax credit will provide seniors with support to get active, stay active and enjoy healthy lifestyles that will lead to a higher quality of life. As a fully refundable tax credit, all Alberta seniors will be able to take ad-vantage of the credit.” “We know that maintaining a healthy routine, at any age, reduces the risk of future health issues. By pursuing wellness, we can live happier, healthier lifestyles and reduce the cost of poor health habits on Alberta’s health care system.” “This program makes it easier for seniors to participate in their com-munities and engage in the many activities available across our province. This is the kind of program that strengthens communities and enables seniors to reach their full potential. And I look forward to seeing more sen-iors in action, whether exercising their body or mind, in recreation and sen-ior centres across our province.” “The Seniors’ Activity Tax Credit is just the latest example of how a PC government will support our seniors. This is in addition to the Property Tax Deferral program we introduced earlier this spring and a Budget that focuses on core programs and services Albertans need and deserve, like health care and supports for our most vulnerable.” The refundable tax credit will be available to all Albertans over 65, in place in 2013, and the estimated cost of the program is $24 million.

was attended by all 9 Lethbridge candidates. An estimat-ed 100 – 200 Nord-Bridge members visited with candi-dates. Thanks to all who supported this information ex-change, including those whose regular program was dis-rupted.

Candidates were also offered the opportunity to HOST COFFEE and treats in the Dining Room on a pre-booked basis, on selected dates. Only two (2) candidates from two parties took advantage of this option, which surprised your Administration. In the fall civic election, more used this option.

And, all candidates were invited to place signage in front of the Centre on the boulevard. Few signs were placed.

On a related note, we were chosen by Elections Alberta to be an Advance Polling place April 19—21. We were also a poll-ing location on Election Day. We trust members enjoyed this convenience. Finally, and certainly of most significance, Nord-Bridge was visited by Premier Alison Redford on April 4. During the visit, our Premier was respectfully welcomed; and able to be-come acquainted with our members, programs, and facilities. Premier Redford also announced a new $500 “Seniors Ac-tivity Tax Credit”, which at a news conference she suggest-ed could help support membership expenses, program fees, and other activities in support of wellness (see the Press Release

on this page). So members, please save your receipts. Also, when questioned about seniors’ centres operations by a Leth-bridge Herald reporter, Premier Redford said her government may be able to assist centres like Nord-Bridge with their oper-ating costs. Both the “Seniors Activity Tax Credit” and the statement on centre operations were welcome news to Nord-Bridge. Respectfully yours,
