CD Case DesignClient: The Band, Florez
This final course project was for the band Florez, based in Nashville, who needed a design for their album “Sweet Tea.” The songs were within the theme of summer in the South so I immediately thought of nostalgic photographs. The photograph located on the cover was taken by my mother over 20 years ago of my cousins fishing. I edited the photo-graph to have a sepia tone and kept a similiar color scheme.

Client: Simonton Vineyards
Th is course project was for client Simonton Vineyards. Owner, Cameron Simonton asked for rustic stationery to display the outdoors and wine country. She also requested grapes to be included in the logo. I chose maroon for the logo color since it is similiar to a red wine. I used a brown color scheme to give the stationery a natural look to respond to my cli-ent’s requests.

T-Shirt Design
I studied abroad in Dublin, Ireland my second year at USC. This inspired me to design a mock t-shirt logo for the study abroad program. I created the four-leaf clover using type rota-tions. I added the same clover to the back of the shirt with a text wrap in order to add more interest to the design.

This is a poster design for the fi ctional spin-off of the popular game show called Minute to Win It. The new show is called Minute to Win It: College Edition. It features a college-themed game idea I created similiar to the style of the original show games. It is called Energy Crash. The contestant must bowl a stress ball into six lined up energy drink cans and knock all six over in under 60 seconds. I designed the poster utilize bold colors similiar to energy drink can labels and fun graphics that appeal to the college market.

Magazine Design
This is a magazine project for my Advanced Writing course. The proj-ect was to write and visualize a full magazine piece. The idea I created was timely because it was Thanksgiv-ing season when I executed my idea. I created a a home and food style magazine highlighting the family festivities. Photography was done in my parent’s home with a Nikon D40 using external fl ash and natural light.

Crafting FunMadison Ostrander, Harry and Susan Dillard’s grand-daughter shows her Thanksgiving spirit with a paper pilgrim hat she created.
Thanksgiving is a time for family recipes and traditions. This special day may bring frustrations and festivities but with the right attitude and humor, it can be the best day of the year.
On the morning of Thanksgiving Day, The Dillard family scurries around the house to gather the various ingredients for the big Thanksgiving feast. Susan and Harry Dillard enjoy the company of their two daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren. They have all come to South Caro-lina to celebrate together. Susan and Harry pride themselves in cooking fine Thanksgiving dishes that have been past down through
the generations. They also take much joy in making new dishes to add fun flavors to the big fam-ily meal. During this holiday, their home stays full of activity unclud-ing; cooking, baking, crafting, and decorating all in the name of Thanksgiving. From morning til night, the Dillard family takes it an hour at a time and finishes the day with a beautiful feast to remember.

Susan’s pumpkin and bourbon pecan pies are made along with a signature apple and pear tart (see recipe on page 35). Susan also bakes cornbread from scratch for the stuffing.
The Turkey is placed in the oven to cook and the pota-toes are peeled and cut.
The potatoes are boiled and drained. Then, the potatoes are mashed with cream cheese and half-and-half and to be baked later.
Susan sets the table with autumn-shaded dishes, fine silverware, and floral arrangements picked from her garden. Susan and Harry’s daughter, Nora makes paper pilgrim hats with the grandchildren.
Susan begins cooking the stuffing while Harry finishes the corn pudding. This is one of his best Thanksgiving recipes that is legendary in the Dillard family.
Harry makes the salad, a combination of bib lettuce, fresh greens, Gorgonzola cheese, raspberries, and roast-ed pecans. The stuffing is then finished by adding chicken broth.
Susan and Harry begin to put the Thanksgiving side dishes together in antique ceramic dishes. Susan uses the broth from the turkey and turkey giblets to make a delicious gravy.
The turkey is removed from the oven and Nora sets out the handmade place cards with the guests’ names (see how to make your own place cards on page 35).

Hour by Hour(From Martha Stewart Living)
Ready to Cook(above)Harry Dillard prepares the pan for the delicious Turkey he will be cook-ing. The turkey should be placed in the oven late morning to allow at least 4 hours for it to cook thoroughly before the Thanksgiving dinner. Harry wears his chef’s jacket he recieved as a gift everytime he plans a large gourmet meal. Cooking for Thanksgiving is a long process but he says, “It is tough at times, but cook-ing gourmet dishes for my family is what I enjoy the most.”
Name plates help each guest feel special with this simple-to-make card that can be created on any PC.
1) Find several fall leaves in your yard. Use a white sheet of paper behind the leaf and scan the leaf to a size of about 3/4 inch. Copy and paste the number of leaves for however many guests.2) Use cardstock (8 1/2x 11) and measure a sheet of cards 2x4 inches. Each sheet will hold 10 cards, 2 across 5 down. Type in the name of each person at the table. Print and cut out each name using pinking shears. 3) Cut out the printed leaves and glue to each name card. 4) Using a colored cardstock of your choice, create a paper tent for each name plate, fold.5) Place the cut name cards with the leaf on the bottom of the paper tent (see below). Use an extended hole-punch and punch 2 holes on top of name card and front of paper tent. Tie a gold rib-bon through the two holes in front and tie a bow.
Thanksgiving Placeholders
This is a new recipe Susan Dillard introduced this Thanksgiving. With the aroma of pears, apples, and cinnamon, this makes for a great fall dish to add to the Thanksgiving fare. It may can be used as an appetizer or yummy dessert.1/2 cup of pecans, chopped finely and toasted1/3 cup of plain breadcrumbs1/4 cup of sugar, and a bit more to sprinkle 1/2 tsp. of ground cinnamon, and a bit more to sprinkle6 sheets of frozen phyllo dough (11.5 by 15 inch sheets), thawed1 stick unsalted butter, melted3 small pears2 Granny Smith apples1) Preheat oven to 400 degrees, then combine the pecans, breadcrumbs, sugar, and cinnamon in a mixing bowl.2) Place parchment paper on a baking sheet and place one phyllo dough sheet on top. Cover the phyllo sheet with butter, then sprinkle the pecan mix over the dough. Do this 4 more times. Place last phyllo sheet on top and cover with 2 tbsp. of butter.3) Begin to slice apples and pears in 1/8 thick slices. Remove the seeds and arrange the apple and pear slices on the top phyllo sheet leaving a 1/4 inch border around edge of dough. Cover the fruit with 2 tbsp. of butter then sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon.4) Bake for about 28 to 32 minutes rotating the sheet halfway through. Phyllo should be a golden brown and fruit should be softened. Let cool and slice into 8 squares. Enjoy!

Old Website
The task for this project was to search for a poorly designed website and re-design it to make it more visually appealing. I chose the website for Bay Metro Transit Authority. With larger photo-graphs and more color, I created a more exciting design to the site but still kept it ledgible and easy to navigate.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Band photography and music are two of my great-est interests. I chose to document my friend’s band A Brighter Life for an event assignment. I have always enjoyed their local shows in Columbia, SC. They are very passionate about their music and entertaining their fans. My goal was to capture their lively expres-sions and their loyal local fanbase.
A Local Treat
16
Guitarist, Walter Roesch, rocks the guitar along side guitarist Byron Dooley. Walter has been playing music locally through-out his college career. Prior to A Brighter Life, he was the lead singer for a local band called Clever Words. All the band members were involved in other local music projects before creating this band in 2010.
Lead singer of A Brighter Life, Jordan Kirk, sings out to the crowd as they sing a long. A Brighter Life has a great local fan base with support from other well known Columbia rock bands in the area. This photo, along with the others, were taken with an external flash diagonally pointed upwards. I wanted to light my subjects where there was still a dim background to give that feel of a dark lit music bar.
17
Fellow musician Taylor Gibson sings along with Walter Roesch on the guitar. A Brighter Life has many local fans who bring a high amount of energy to their shows.

I followed the Aiken, SC Hounds drag fox hunt group for several months. I docu-mented what few people experience and know about fox hunting and why it has been one of the longest existing tradi-tions in this small southern town. Using a combination of photographs and audio interviews, I captured moments of cubbing practice and the Blessing of the Hounds, a formal ceremony that takes place Thanks-giving morning. This was an immensely challenging photo project. I learned a sig-nifi cant amount about this special sport.

A Day in the LifeAbove: Huntsman Katherine Gunter rides into Hitchcock Woods with her pack of hounds in preparation for cubbing practice.
Top Right: Women from Aiken Hounds group share jokes as they get dressed in formal wear for the Blessing of the Hounds Ceremony.
Bottom Right: The main event of the Blessing of the Hounds is to have priests or ministers from a local church gather to say a prayer for the riders, the woods, and the animals and that they have a safe upcoming season.
20
Top: The hounds roam around Memorial Gate before the ceremony begins. Locals gather around the brick wall to watch the festivities take place.
Bottom: Aiken Hounds Master Larry Byers looks out to the large crowd gathering for the ceremony. The green jacket is worn by the Masters of the Aiken Hounds. The jackets have been passed down since 1914 when the Aiken Hounds organization was formed.

One of the hounds in the pack stares towards the huntsman waiting for his command. Fox hounds are extremely obediant and are trained from birth to hunt fox scents.

Women at the TopDuring October 2011, I photographed two University of South Carolina Women’s Soccer games. I enjoyed photo-graphing a college sport and using a lens over 100mm. The players were exceptional and the team successfully won each game I photographed.

This was the largest design project I imple-mented during the course of my internship at Colonial Life Arena. The objective was to create a series of one-sheeters for en-tertainment promoters that highlight why Columbia is a great market for their events. I created one sheet for the general Colum-bia Market as well as one for the Urban and Hispanic Markets. The criteria for the sheets were clarity, design, and interest. To add interest to the basic facts of the arena, I choose to add a masked photo of the arena inside the state of South Carolina, an easy-to-read map, and a coloful 3-D pie chart. After multiple meetings with the Marketing Department, I completed the final design.
