Primo piano

exploring the process as an on-stage performance in its own right, Primo Piano emphasised the ‘act of experiences’ through exposure. observing how the material- once the fabric has transcended the physical state from soft to solid, can re-create the performance’s experience - both of control and abandonment - while achieving its own independency from it.

JW3 Space Invaders - Neighbourhood Watch

Between Doors

This installation was presented for a group show at JW3, which also co-curated. The show wanted to explore the notion of individuality within community – whether each needs the other to function.

i was interested to challenge the meaning of the physical objects itself, the references we hold to it and the challenge of portraying at once feelings of resemblance and void/distance.

The Wall of 17 Croxted Road

some sort of un-staBility on the thirD floor

recording the journey of a wall while deconstructing itself from its initial – and established – function, into a new meaning: i wanted to look at the paradoxes set between its political and social association, around ideologies of division and union.

it is in fact in its final state, at the dislocation and relocation of the wall’s components into new and diverse structures, where we might reflect upon the authenticity of its characteristics. (Continue next page)

The Wall of 17 Croxted Road

Through the dialogue of the wall’s owner, we can share his experience; i am interested in looking at common human stories and their fragility, and how this might help us to develop a shared common sense and understanding.

The world as a stage

the worlD as a stage

With this installation placed outside the university’s building, i wanted to investigate the notions of life and theatre, of calculation and observation amongst the mundanity of everyday life.

This project challenged my perception about the use of a public and private space, as well as the level of consideration needed while exposing people’s private lives within a public context. my aim was to show simply what we do in our everyday lives – the small, perhaps unconsidered moments - and to consider whether we are aware when we play the spectator or the main character within our everyday. moreover, with the use of the familiar scaffolding construction, i wanted to emphasise the notion of constant ‘recognisable’ changes happening around the city and within us; highlighting both our awareness and our reaction to them.

appearing as incomplete scaffolding construction by day, the structure took life at night-fall as a stage – with theatrical lights – and transformed into a Fellini-like set within which a sequence of short films were projected.

The project was made possible by the support of TFL and private sponsorship.

Brothers -Nostalgic Object

Brothers - nostalgic oBject

i wanted to record and explore the nostalgia of memories, and that of a past experience.

The wood, which has once functioned as bridge between the two brothers playful action, is now holding the reminiscence of it.

Using a different set and composition i was interested to look at the inanimate object and whether it could reenact the same emotional value given to it by the two brothers; exploring both the mystification of it, and the way we worship it.

appearing almost as a theatrical set; this scene was recorded two weeks just before my parents moved house. The excitement, but mostly the stress and the sadness, about leaving a place they have identified themselves with for more than 20 years, are made visible through the juxtaposition of anxiety and movement interruption played in the two videos.

Documenting this very particular aspect of my mum’s everyday routine was fundamental in me understanding the dynamic of a ritual she identifies herself with. The challenge lay in crystallizing her experience, while keeping mine firmly distant.
