School Concert The students have been rehearsing for our school concert throughout the term and are looking forward to performing at the matinee and evening sessions next Tuesday and Wednesday. Thank you to all families who have purchased tickets to attend. It is a big feat to plan a concert where every single student has the opportunity to perform and the Concert Committee, led by Ms Tilney, has done an amazing job coordinating this. Hills Dance Spectacular Last weekend our three dance groups performed at the Hills Dance Spectacular. This was another wonderful performance opportunity for these students. Special congratulations to the Junior Dance group which placed fourth out of the ten groups in their section.Thank you to Ms Moore, Ms Stewart, Ms Veldon and Ms Patel for giving up their personal time on a Sunday to attend. Ku-ring-gai Public Speaking Competition Last Thursday Sienna B represented our school at the Ku-ring-gai Public Speaking Competition held at NSW Parliament House and coordinated by our local State Member of Parliament, Mr Alister Henskens. Sienna did an excellent job presenting both her prepared speech on “Has the Lucky Country run out of luck?” and an impromptu speech on “A friend in need is a friend indeed” and we are very proud of her. Student Absences Please be reminded that when your child is absent from school, an explanation needs to be provided, ideally on the first day of their return. Where an explanation is not provided within seven calendar days, Department of Education procedures mean it must be recorded as an unjustified absence. The Home School Liaison Officer visits our school each semester and follows up where a student has a number of unjustified absences. Positive Behaviour for Learning During this fortnight all classes are revising expectations for after school procedures and how our three school values relate to catching buses, waiting at the pick-up zone for their parent to arrive or walking or riding home. The Week 8 recipients for our PBL draw were Sarah A and Carla S. Merit Certificates Congratulations to the following students who received a merit certificate at last week’s assembly:

_______________________________________________________________________________________ Tell Them From Me

Parent Survey Now Open Our school is participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements. The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 4 September and 27 September. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated. The survey is available in 23 languages. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au To access the survey for our school go to: https://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/normanhurst Kind regards, Ms Jocelyn Williams Assistant Principal _______________________________________________________________________________________ Art at Normanhurst

This year Normanhurst Public School had 12 students submit artworks in Operation Art, an initiative of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in association with the New South Wales Department of Education. The Operation Art program provides a forum for schools and students to demonstrate their visual arts achievements through exhibitions at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. This year we had four students artworks selected to be displayed – April A., Maria S., Gemma M., and Jennifer S. The Opening of Operation Art was on Saturday 14 September. Please join us in congratulating these young artists.

________________________________________________________________________________________ Dance News – Hills Dance Spectacular On Sunday 15 September our Junior, Senior and Boys’ Dance Groups competed in The Hills Dance Spectacular Eisteddfod held at Pacific Hills Christian School. All of the Dance Groups performed exceptionally in their highly competitive sections, competing against many other public, private and independent schools from all around Sydney. The Junior Dance Group performed in the Stage 2 section with 10 competitors and were successfully awarded fourth place for their performance of Fright Night. The Senior Dance Group performed in a large Stage 3 section with 16 competitors and displayed excellent skills and enthusiasm during their performance of Unity. The Boys’ Dance Group performed in a Boys only section with 6 competitors and were highly commended for their performance of Jailhouse Rock. We are very proud of our talented dancers at Normanhurst. All groups represented our school with pride. Thank you to Ms Gorrell for supporting our participation in this event and to all the fabulous dance parents for your constant support and encouragement. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Uniform Shop News Next term is summer uniform so now is a great time to check what you need and get organised. If you want to check sizing, be sure to come and see us during our opening hours. We will be open this Friday 20 September, 8.30-9.30 a.m. and 2.30-3.30 p.m. This will be the last opening day for Term 3. If you are unable to visit the shop in person, you can purchase by emailing a completed order form, along with proof of payment. Please ensure your order is placed no later than Wednesday 25 September for delivery before the end of term. Orders are packed and distributed to your child via the school office. The uniform shop continues to rely on volunteers in order to operate. We are in need of new volunteers, particularly to cover the 2.30-3.30 p.m. shift. If you can spare an hour to help out, please contact me with your availability. You will be working alongside the uniform shop manager (me) as well as experienced volunteers so you will have plenty of support whilst you learn. Don’t be shy! It’s a great way to meet other parents and the more volunteers we have the more fun it will be for everyone. URGENT – we need volunteers for this Friday! Please get in touch if you can help. Without sufficient volunteers the uniform shop will struggle to provide an efficient service to our school community. Volunteers are a vital part of the successful running of the shop. Thank you for your support. Hot Food Lunch Orders PARENTS PLEASE NOTE: In recent weeks, Lisa has mentioned some children have approached the counter at lunchtime and requested to order hot food (for their lunch order). Unfortunately any heated orders MUST BE pre-ordered and cannot be made ‘on the spot’. Parents, could you kindly please inform your child if they do want a ‘hot’ lunch you/or they need to do it online or via email. ALL lunches should be pre-ordered online (as even sandwiches take some time to prepare) and if Lisa is alone in the Canteen on a Wednesday or Thursday she cannot serve at the counter and also make something for those children who have presented with no lunch. Only snacks will be served over-the-counter at recess and lunchtime. Thank you for your understanding. Volunteer Vacancies Have you got an hour or more to spare to help in our Canteen on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday? We would appreciate a volunteer for any of these shifts in the next few weeks: (Please sign into your School24 account to accept any of these / see any other shifts for the month; or contact myself or Lisa to cancel a shift)
