HARVESTING HERBICIDE

Harvesting partially removes aquatic weed mass but only small amount of Phosphorus and Nitrogen.

Alleviates boating lane obstruction in Stehr and Myrtle channels in response to complaints

Causes silt disruption due to turbulence in shallow areas causing spread of nutrients.

Is inefficient and costly =/>$10,000/year

Fragmentation and loose cuttings have spread Eurasian Water Milfoil into main body of the lake.

Most lakes are abandoning harvesting for above reasons.

Use of herbicides is a first for NA in managing aquatic weeds

Unknown numbers of water consumers - but none along Stehr tract –they have their own water supply system

Emotional and strong feelings of some members against its use. Must help them understand.

Cost effective – systemic will have up to a 3 year effectiveness saving $20,000 in Sterh Tract

Sonar (Fluridone) for Stehr Tract Clipper for EWM in selected lake areas. Consultant 100% supportive of plan since

plan is < 10% of lake area. Herbicides used widely at other lakes

Owassa, Kittitiny, Mohawk, Mountain. Owassa has water consumers also. Totally biodegrades

EWM INFESTATION AREAS

Stehr Tract Approximate area to apply

herbicide 25 acres.

Very dense EWM between Alfano’s and entrance to Blue Ribbon

Some areas of Stehr Tract will be exposed in fall drawdown but not area of EWM.

Suitable for Systemic type (Sonar)

Lake Areas North Shore –about 3 acres

Causeway Cove – about 6 acres

Dam Cove – about 4 acres

West Shore – about 2 acres

Total area approx. 15 acres

Suitable for Contact type (Clipper)

RECOMMENDATION 1

Notify members by letter

Invite to a meeting in February or March to ask questions

Test Treat the 25 acre Sterh Tract area with a systemic product called Sonar.

Two 15 ppb treatments over 2 week period.

Only irrigation restriction

Will be effective control for 2-3 years

Minimize or eliminate harvesting.

Lake drawdown will help shallower areas.

RECOMMENDATION 2

Apply a contact product, Clipper to control EWM in selected areas in the lake proper, i.e. the North Shore, West Shore, Causeway, or Dam coves in heavily infested areas.

This will provide some degree of control over EWM.

A survey in July will provide valuable information for a future decision making in 2016.

Clipper is a contact product that has takes very little time (2 days) to knock down the weeds.

It too has no water use restrictions except irrigation.

Clipper is a proven effective and fast acting control of EWM

BUDGET COSTS FOR CONTROLLING EWM

Sonar for Stehr Tract $12,000 for 25 Acres

Total Cost for both treatments$22,000

Clipper for Spot treatment

$690/acre $10,000 for 15 acres
