In an industry marked by increased competitiveness, you need to support next-generation interfaces andservices and reduce your operating costs. Nortel NetworksSpectrum Peripheral Module helps you achieve both goals.

The Nortel Networks Spectrum Peripheral Module (SPM) is a high-speed,

optical interface switch peripheral that significantly reduces your equip-

ment space and operating costs while positioning you to take advantage

of new converged service delivery opportunities.

With its flexible architecture, the SPM serves a variety of markets and supports several network tech-nologies, including TDM, ATM, and IP. Spectrum Peripheral Modulecan be deployed with a wide range of the Nortel Networks switchingsystems, including DMS-100/200(local), DMS-500 (multiservice),DMS-250 (long distance), DMS-GSP(Global Services Platform), and DMS-MMP (Multi-Market Platform usedfor international/local tandem).

Spectrum Peripheral ModuleThe evolution platform for

next-generation global networks

Nortel Networks

Metro 3000 Multiservice Platformseries is a family of next-generationSONET products that enable theevolution and enhancement ofexisting networks while setting a neweconomic benchmark for network efficiency and increasing broadbandservice capability.

Reduced operating costsReducing the footprint for theSpectrum Peripheral Module alsosignificantly decreases associatedoperating costs.

• Decreases floor space rent/chargeson a monthly basis

• Dramatically reduces power costsfrom three to ten times that ofexisting lineups, thus decreasing the demand on rectifiers and battery strings

• Reduces the load on the air condi-tioning plant, thereby decreasingpower wattage demands and cuttingboth commercial AC costs and emer-gency generator load requirements

• Reduces total cable terminationsmore than 21 times, subsequentlydecreasing service installation timesand reducing the failure points

• Deployment of Spectrum PeripheralModule with DMS-100 alsoreduces transmission equipmentand floor space requirements due to improved rackfill and eliminationof the copper DSX

• Can eliminate digital cross-connectswhen used in conjunction withmodern transmission equipmentsuch as the OPTera 3500

Improved reliabilityBecause office equipment is consolidatedand all Spectrum Peripheral Modulecomponents are redundant, your overallDMS network becomes more reliable.Reliability is also enhanced since theSpectrum Peripheral Module enablesend-to-end optical trunking.

Key benefitsPositioning for next-generationnetwork evolution

With its flexible architecture, theSpectrum Peripheral Modulesupports transport evolution fromcopper to SONET/SDH. In addi-tion, multiple trunk types (ISUP,PRI, PTS) can be supported concurrently on a single module. In Nortel Networks Voice over Packetnetworks, the Spectrum PeripheralModule can evolve into a Multi-service Gateway 4000 (MG 4000) as a standalone trunk gateway. Or, it can also be modified to provideinterworking between the DMS andother Succession elements as anInterworking Spectrum PeripheralModule (IW SPM) or DynamicPacket Trunk Spectrum PeripheralModule (DPT SPM).

With its flexible architecture, the Spectrum PeripheralModule serves a wide variety of markets and supportsnetwork technologies, including TDM and Packet.

Reduced space requirementsSpectrum Peripheral Module’s high-speed OC-3 and STM-1 interfacesreduce space requirements by elimi-nating multiplexing equipment, thereby reducing both cabling and airconditioning. This creates achievablespace savings of four to six times thatof existing lineups. For example, oneOC-3 Spectrum Peripheral Moduleframe provides 4,032 DS0 channels(as opposed to 960 DS0 channelspreviously served by the DTE frame).Additional floor space savings areachieved due to the SpectrumPeripheral Module's compact opticalinterconnection capability (vs. DS-1/E-1), efficient packaging, andoptional integrated echo cancellation.

Transport consolidationLeveraging the Spectrum PeripheralModule’s OC-3 Packet interface toNortel Networks OPTera Metro3400/3500 is another effective solu-tion for node and electrical consolida-tion. The OPTera Metro 3400/3500offers an unmatched, non-blockingbandwidth management solutionwhen optical transport networkconnections are required. Since themodular and scalable OPTera Metroplatform supports a wide array ofoptical hubbing and self-healing ringtopologies, it can eliminate other co-located transmission equipmentincluding digital cross-connects. Thisthereby enhances reliability, whilereducing footprint and power require-ments. The Nortel Networks OPTera

High-capacity common equipment This module performs the peripheralprocessing, control, and maintenancefunctions.

Configurable resource modules The Spectrum Peripheral Moduleprovides up to 26 resource modules(RMs) configurable for multiple appli-cations with flexible sparing configura-tion. The different types of resourcemodules initially available include:

• OC-3, which provides the OC-3TDM interface

• STM-1, which provides the STM-1TDM interface

• ATM over OC-3/ SONET optical

• Digital Signal Processor, whichperforms tone detection, generation, and continuity testing

• Data Link Control, which performsPRI D-channel signaling

• Voice Service Processor, whichperforms integrated and pooled echo cancellation

• External Synch Interface whichprovides Direct TSG Input

Modular packagingThe Spectrum Peripheral Moduleframe (only 27" W x 84" H x 18" D)is designed for complete frontalaccess. This enables installations asclose as six inches from walls or 12inches apart in back-to-back framelineups. Circuit packs are enclosed in mechanical housings that enablelocal EMI containment.

The Spectrum PeripheralModule advantage• Redundant high-speed interface

directly into the transmission hierarchy

• Flexible, scalable telecom applica-tions platform

• Integrated with DMS switchingfamily to minimize training andoperational differences

• Capital savings from packaging efficiencies

• Provides:

- Voice/data call processing

- Full complement of PRI services

- Flexible architecture for new applications

- Integrated and pooled echo cancellation

• Currently supports:

- OC-3 TDM for ANSI ISUP, and ANSI PRI, PTS

- STM-1 TDM, for ETSI ISUP v1/v2, local country variants, and ETSI PRI (2Q 02)

The Nortel Networks evolutionary network platforms and applications enable service providers to intelligently evolve from

today’s circuit-switched to next-generation packet networks at the pace carriers choose. Integrally aligned with Nortel Networks

Voice over IP networks, these evolutionary platforms are designed to maximize existing investment protection.
