At NKB we strive to make the most innovative, durable and user-friendly pro-ducts on the market. It’s often the smallest details that make a difference and for 2011 we took a even closer look at all existing production details and continued to improve them one by one after a great quality advantage in 2010. The result of our extensive construction overhaul is what we call PROGRES-SION 10: A very detailed catalogue of product features that are simple yet highly effective for quality and performance. By simplifying the production process and standardizing single parts of products throughout our range, the construction process and the number of parts needed has been greatly opti-mized. For the first time ever computer supported sewing machines have been implemented, guaranteeing a perfect stitch that is durable and of the highest quality. Cloth cutting processes have also been optimized, allowing us to use more expensive and higher quality materials that are lighter and more durable. Even the seam construction diagram has been changed from the classic zig-zag stitch to a stronger triple zigzag. All top are now stitched and glued. The list of improvements is long and peppered with completely new innovations like the Fusion 10 and the new pigtails. Before any product can leave the factory, it must pass all quality inspections and check points. Every production process is defined in the smallest de-tail and accurately logged, allowing us to achieve the highest level of quality control for every single product. With the sum of innovations, new materials, construction changes and quality control procedures, the standard of our pro-ducts has risen to an entirely new level.

new inflATe – DeflATe vAlves:2011 we invented a completely new valve system. The valve now offers a bombproof closing system, very easy and comfortable to handle and with an integrated deflator pin. The material of the valve itself and the connection to the tube also has been improved so the valves can not twist anymore and can not slip into the tube. PUMP – SSSITTT – CLOSED – GO KITING

fusiOn TenThe fusion 10 is a completely new connection between the strut and leading edge. In contrast to normal connections, the forces are no longer supported by a webbing strap but by a flexible line. The line ensures a perfectly clean connection of strut to leading edge even with the smallest struts and offers our strongest strut connection ever. Just a little revolution in strut technology!

RelAunch BungeesThe 2010 Rebel and Evo both utilize the same new re-launch bungee system. A small ring supports an elastic bungee attached to the front leg of the back line “V”. When the lines are not under flying tension, the V is pulled tight to the leading edge preventing any line snags on the kite’s wingtips during laun-ching, landing and water re-launch. The clean, low profile design requires no assembly when attaching your lines to the kite and is reinforced with a durable PVC patch to prevent any wear on the leading edge.

cOmpuTeR suppORTeD sewingAt North Kiteboarding we strive to perfect the smallest manufacturing details. With the aid of computer-supported sewing machines, we are guaranteed the strongest possible seam construction and a clean, good-looking stitch. Our extremely durable double V pigtails are also constructed using this innovation for maximum quality.

DOuBleD AnD cleAneD pigTAilsNew ways in constructing Front – and Back Pigtails have been found by NKB. No more belt struts are used, but strongest dyneema lines. The advantage of the lines is the flexibility at the edge of the canopy, so they can flex in every single direction, not like stiff belt struts. Further more two layers of strongest Dacron are sewed on all Pigtails which ensures a perfect and flutter free load transmission.

cAm BATTeRns

Our revolutionary and patent-pending Cam Battens are made of flexible ny-lon and improve the stability of the canopy and reduce the drag of the kite. The Cam Battens allow us to achieve a deeper profile and make the kites more powerful. The deeper canopy combined with a round entry profile gives better stall resistance, which yields not only better low end power but also better hang-time. Cam Battens also give the kite much better upwind abilities and very good stability in the sky.

KOOK-pROOf cOnnecTORs

These connectors prevent the number one cause of kite accidents by en-suring that front lines cannot be attached to the back of the kite and back lines cannot be attached to the front.

self Rescue hAnDles

These loops attached to the inside of the wingtips make it easier to hold the kite for bodydrag rescue.

ARAmiD ReinfORceD

A necessary quality standard are the Aramid Reinforcements, added in highly exposed areas such as the Micro Batten pockets and the leading edge scuff pads. These reinforcements reduce wear from everyday use and increase the durability and life of your kite.

lOAD DisTRiBuTiOn pAnels

More powerful kite profiles means that the canopy has to carry higher loads resulting in a distorted profile and loss of efficiency. The Load Distribution Panels spread the load from the lines to a wider area keeping the profile smooth and distinct and allowing the kite to perform with maximum effici-ency at all times.

RelAunch Bungees

In order to make the relaunch easier and to avoid any possible line tangling, we've added Relaunch Bungees at the kite tip. The bungees keep the lines lying slick against the inside of the leading edge, preventing any line from going over the top of the kite during the relaunch.

AnTi snAg cOncepT

The combination of Re-launch Bungees and our new low profile batten po-ckets and thin strut ends helps prevent any lines from snagging anywhere on the kite during relaunch. – Batten Pocket Construction – Thin Rip Ends – Relaunch Bungee

cAnOpy

In order to produce a lightweight and durable kite, North uses T9 polyester ripstop for the canopy. This material does not absorb any water and is coa-ted with UV-protection on both sides.

BlADDeRs

Our UV-obstructing polyester polyurethane bladders proved to be very reli-able and are now also equipped with return valves at the small transversal tubes.

DAcROn leADing-eDge AnD RiBs

All areas exposed to peak stresses are made of top-quality 170g or 175g Dacron. This material helps achieve maximum tear strength in combination with conventional kite materials and will never delaminate.

ReBel 2011

Whether you're ripping apart waves, getting huge, lofty jumps or just bla-sting around on flat water, the 2011 Rebel is a stylish 5-line all-terrain free-ride/wave machine that gives you an unmatched "connected" feel and virtu-ally limitless performance in all conditions.

The Rebel has become famous for it's direct de-power, smooth, predictable turning, even when de-powered, and short bar stroke. And this year is no ex-ception! Flutter-free wingtips have again greatly improved the smoothness and consistency of the Rebel's turning. This smooth turning combined with optimized canopy profiles that are highly resistant to back-stalling provide seamless power delivery ideal for surfing. Improved bar feel and de-power in the small sizes means even more comfortable and accessible top-end so you can keep having fun even when the wind gets nuclear. The loaded 5th line design provides the highest level of safety as well as being responsible for the unique short de-power stroke and direct lively feeling. Mainly due to the floating strut construction, the Rebels get a very direct and precise feeling – even when depowered. Our highest quality standard "Progression 10" construction means the Rebel is built to last and withstand the demands that serious riders put on their kites, as well as providing a long list of other slick details like back line V bungees and snag free strut ends. Now stop dreaming and go ride!

rebel 2010 vs rebel 2011

k E n W i n n E r

Ken winneR, nORTh DesigneR ReBel vs ReBel

Think about two slightly different surfboards; both the same size, same shape,

same rails, same fin configuration, yet subtly different in rocker or outline or fin

angle. From just looking at them not one person in 100 could tell which is going

to ride better. Yet after riding both you might easily determine that one is clearly

superior.

Now think about the 2010 Rebel and the 2011 Rebel. To even the trained eye

they look almost exactly the same. Not one in 100 people could tell by looking at

them what the differences are. Yet still, when we handed a 2011 Rebel 6 proto to

one of our long-time Rebel customers for a test run, he thought it was a big step

better than the older model. That's where kite design has arrived lately. You just

can't tell much by looking.

whAT's The sAme AnD why:

5 l inesThe Rebel remains a 5-line kite, of course, all for all the usual reasons:

1.) Short depower stroke and crisp feel. In sizes 9 meters and over. Anyone who

rides wave or has short arms or just likes a responsive kite can appreciate the

importance of achieving full depower with a minimal movement of the control bar.

2.) Super stability. If it weren't so easy to keep in the air you'd be forgiven for

thinking it's made of rock.

3.) Easy relaunch in light winds. Even riders who like four-line kites often add a fifth

line to make relaunch possible in super-light wind.

4.) Safety. When you need to get total, complete and perfect depower in half a

second, nothing else works as well as a 5th line.

size-specific Tuning:1.) Sizes 10 to 14 have been tuned for short bar stroke and a maximally crisp feel.

2.) Sizes 5 to 8, which naturally tend to be a bit too crisp and responsive, have

been tuned for a crispness and responsiveness that's just right. Not soft and slow;

not uncomfortably harsh and fast.

3.) 9-meter kites can go either way, a bit slow and soft or a bit fast and harsh. We

spent some time tuning this one for what we think is just the right feel in a wave

and all-around kite.

TOleRAnT Of suB-spec inflATiOnThe 2010 and 2011 Rebels work best when inflated to 6psi, but they still work

fine at 5 or 4psi. By contrast, many kites on the market these days need 8 or 10

psi to fly correctly.

ARc, segmenTATiOn, sTRuT cOnfiguRATiOnThe overall geometry remains the same because the Rebel's unique combination

of arc, segmentation and strut configuration gives good stability, power, depower

and flutter resistance. Multiple segments through the center of the canopy give

good profile fidelity, while one straight segment on each side gives a flat profile

where it can do the most good in resisting unwanted luffing and flutter. Five struts

give needed structure while allowing for good performance at low inflation pres-

sures.

10 YEARS NORTH TRue KiTeBOARDing wORkbOOk

Page 17: North 2011

whAT's DiffeRenT AnD why

pOweR vs. DepOweRThe 2010 Rebel has a lot of power. Probably no kite has more. For 2011 we re-

fined canopy profiles and angle of attack to boost depower without hurting power.

BAR pRessuRe & TuRn iniTiATiOnA kite with low bar pressure often seems to require very little pressure for turn

initiation. A kite with high bar pressure is the opposite. The 2011 Rebel has slightly

lower bar pressure than the 2010, and slightly easier turn initiation. This is some-

thing we didn't want to overdo because then the kite would fail to deliver good

bar feedback.

We achieved this improvement through a subtle change in overall kite geometry.

TuRning speeDSizes 10 and up in the 2011 Rebel turn a bit easier, faster and more smoothly than

the 2010. Sizes 9 and down have slightly easier turn initiation and are smoother

while turning, but overall turning speed is about the same.

speeDThough the Rebel won the 2010 Kiteboard Race World Championship, it really is

just a wave and all-around kite and pretty much none of the testing for the 2011

model involved race boards. That said, the 2011 Rebel is a bit faster than the

2010. This improvement comes from refinements in profile depth, angle of attack

and tip shape.

BOTTOm lineNot one in 100 kiteboarders could spot the differences in geometry and shape

between the 2010 Rebel and the 2011, but not one in 100 could fail to miss the

improvements in feel.

The Vegas is a pure C-shape kite that embodies radical new-school riding and delivers the precision feel needed to stomp today's most technical tricks and challenge tomorrow's limits. A no-compromise design that deli-vers massive pop, steady pull and a predictable, direct turning radius. Pull the trigger on massive mega-loops or unhook and launch into a mobe with the assurance of rock-solid pull and steadiness. The Vegas delivers high de-power with the widest range of use although it’s a C-kite and gives you virtually no de-power for full-on powered wakestyle. The 2011 Vegas: Style and conviction without compromise.

Two different positions to connect the front lines: One for the FREEstyle high depower SET UP and one for the NEW SCHOOL SET UP.

fROnT- / BAcKline pOweR DisTRiBuTiOn

When riding with full power in the Free-style mode, the forces on the lines are split into 60 % on the front lines and 40 % on the back lines. Therefore, less stee-ring impulse is needed to make the kite turn quickly. When riding with full power in the New School mode, the forces on the lines are split into 75 % on the front lines and 25 % on the back lines. This ma-kes the back lines less sensitive, causing less movement while you are throwing an unhooked trick. More steering impulse is required to get the same turning as that of a Vegas in Freestyle mode.

Tip TuRning AReA

In Freestyle mode the tip has a wider surface affected by the rider’s bar input. Therefore, the kite is much more sensitive and reactive in steering. In New School mode, a smaller surface of the tip is af-fected. More bar input is required for quick steering reaction. More bar stability means the kite will not “rise up” when you unhook making it easier to throw mind-blowing New School tricks.

DepOweR BehAviOuR

With the New School set up the Vegas still retains some Depower but becomes less sensitive to bar sheeting and stee-ring making it ideal for unhooking.

vegas 2010 vs vegas 2011

inTeRview wiTh nKB DesigneR RAlf gRösel ABOuT The new vegAs 2011

nKB: 2010 was a very successful year for the Vegas. No other C-Kite is as well known and loved by the freestyle crowd like the Vegas. How come a C-Kite is that compatible to other kite concepts like deltas or bows? RAlf gRösel: In my opinion, it’s primarily the fact that the Ve-gas is the most versatile C-kite and lots of riders with completely different riding styles are attracted. Of course the Vegas is main-ly dedicated to the needs of Wakestyle and Newschool riders but with the precise handling, the predictable handling and the effective, short depower stroke it makes itself very interesting for lots of different target groups.

nKB: Meanwhile North Kiteboarding is offering seven different kite concepts in it’s product portfolio, what is your personal con-nection to the Vegas? Which kite do you ride when you are not testing?

RAlf gRösel: During developing four different kitelines, the-re is indeed not lots of time for just enjoying kiting, additionally it’s pretty hard to switch off the testing button in your head… Still the Vegas is the kite which means a lot to me because it is besides the Evo the kite which suits the best to my personal riding style. Even I’m not the best freestyler or wakestyler of the world, I love the precise handling and the depower abilities which help a lot to have relaxed and comfortable kiting at my gusty homespots.

nKB: Which leads us to the question what changed in the con-cept of the Vegas?

RAlf gRösel: The Vegas 2011 is an evolution of the 2010 model. It was really essential to me, to keep the basic characte-ristics of the 2010 model. Like a VW Golf VI is the best in his class being an evolvement of the Golf V, we also changed a lot of small things without loosing the typical Vegas gene. The most important and most challenging innovation is the new Technoforce D2 material. This especially for North Kiteboarding developed double rip stop material was introduced with the Fuse and is now used in any kites of North Kiteboarding. Flying and handling characteristics are changed a lot so the kites have been finetuned a lot to fulfil the expectations of the test crews. The stiffness of the D2 is way higher then at common materials and tensions in the kite can be used to improve the handling and the performance of a kite.

nKB: So what’s the main difference of the 2011 to it’s fore-runner?

RAlf gRösel: As already mentioned above, the Technoforce D2 material is essentially improving the stiffness of the canopy and the whole kite structure. This was a main reason being able to change the profile in the centre and the tension on the trai-ling edge. The result is a more powerful and more constant pop. Unhooked tricks can be done easier because the kite offers a more constant line tension. Handling and feedback of the kite are finetuned and enables to have enormous control of your kite. The sizes 5, 7 and 9 offer a second breakinglines attachment, which is slowing down the turning speed of the kite.

nKB: Which is the main target group of this kite?

RAlf gRösel: The target group is of course like also in former years, the Freestyle and Newschool fraction. The Vegas is THE kite of our tem riders and is again dedicated to their growing needs and wishes. Therefore I’m totally convinced the Vegas is the best C-kite we ever had. Why? Because it’s the continuous development of a already convincing and established kite model.

nKB: Does the Vegas again offer the option of two different trim options?

RAlf gRösel: Yes, these are again the two options:

– 5th line Freestyle High Depower: Lots of depower with the classical Vegas feeling. This option offers versatility and is ideal for freeriding, jumping hooked and unhooked manoeuvres

– 5th line Freeestyle / Newschool: Dedicated to New School, this option offers less Depower, ex-tremest stability riding unhookedand is less sensitive on steering commands at loaded power moves. Further it of course offers all safety and relaunch advan-tages of the 5th element.

The Fuse is a brand new kind of free-ride/wave kite with a huge wind range, light, predictable feel and great jumping qualities. Its unique and simple new Attack Control Bridle gives the Fuse smooth, reactive stee-ring that is especially evident when de-powered, making it a huge step forward in terms of manoeuvrability and directness on 4 lines. Additionally, the new AC Bridle gives you the ability to safely and completely de-power the Fuse on its back similar to a 5 line system. Easily accessible low-end power and extreme resistance to back-stalling gives the Fuse great light wind capabilities while the AC Bridle ensures direct de-power and a crisp bar feeling even in strong winds with easy push and pull power. The Fuse is built to last utilizing the newest Techno Force canopy material d² - already since the first generation of the Fuse - that is more resistant to tearing than conventional material. Meanwhile all North Kites are built out of the fantas-tic d² material. Lazy pump simplicity will get you on the water quickly and easily when it counts. To ensure a 100% safety solution the Fuse can also be flown on the 5th Element if desired.

DynO 2011

Enter the Dyno. This is the light-wind kite. It offers parked power similar to a parafoil together with superior dynamic power, better depower, more nu-anced bar feel, better turning speed and superior safety (owing to inflatable elements). A versatile kite that will fly on either four lines or five, it has supe-rior performance and handling, light winds and lulls are handled with ease.

Low weight is clearly the Dyno's main feature. To get it, several steps have been taken. The Lazy Pump inflation system was eliminated because single-point inflation of course adds weight. Thinner bladder material and a lighter Dacron have been used in the inflatable elements. Two extra segments are put in the arc between the quarter ribs, which produced a slightly truer ae-rofoil in the center lifting area. Construction details that contribute crucially to function and durability remain, others were eliminated.

As a result, the 18-meter Dyno flys in winds that are barely perceptible.

A new Dynosty in lightwind performance has just begun.

The “5th Element-like Pressureless Safety System” continues to be the most important feature of the Solid. In addition to the regular landing and relaunch option, this system offers perfect safety functions: releasing the 5th Element safety line pulls down the kite’s central profile, causing the rest of the kite to collapse backwards. The wind meets no resistance and the depowered kite sinks to the ground. Together with improved profile and bridle geometries we optimized the fly-ing properties of the various sizes. The smaller sizes now have more har-monious flying characteristics and permit an absolutely stress free kiting experience, particularly for newcomers and intermediate riders. The Vario Trim option allows the rider to adjust the kite to personal preferences. The Solid is a true fun kite. With its easy and forgiving flying characteristics, to-gether with a wide wind range and the safety of the 5th Element, the Solid 09 combines reliability, easy handling and performance.

Dynamic Power is a term used to describe the way in which a kite generates power. The small Vegas sizes for example can generate lots of power when flown aggressively up and down, where as the big Rebel sizes allow you to simply sheet & go.

sheeT & gO

“Sheet & Go” is the ability to simply pull the bar towards you (sheet-in) to go and to push the bar away from you (sheet- out) to stop. Since the kite has such a great power/de-power range, minimal steering is required to generate power from the kite.

iROn heART iv

Four years after its introduction to the market, the Iron Heart IV, again rede-fines the benchmark for safety. The light but solid stainless steel and plastic material combination is one of the most reliable safety systems on the mar-ket. The release forces are very low by less than 4 kg at a load of 200 kg in a dry and sand free environment. Excellent function is ensured even in wet and sandy conditions with fewer than 7 kg release force at 200 kg.

The centrally located Iron Heart IV release grip is large and ergonomic for a fast and good function. It is very easy to find and can be operated either with the right or left hand. The futuristic design prevents the system from jamming and greatly facilitates reassembling.

fRench nORm 2011

For the 2011 bars, we insisted on app-lying the French norm, just like every year. This means that a public institution must test various requirements to two systems of the bar under preset conditions: – The quick release system of the bar

(Iron Heart) and – The quick release that separates the

rider completely from the kite (safety leash)

Both safety systems are tested in various media, the release force must not exceed 100N (9.8Kg). The actual release pro-cess of both systems must not exceed 0.5sec. The transition from riding positi-on to release (reaching for the Iron Heart or safety leash from riding position with both hands on the bar) must not exceed 2sec.

Other requirements:The grips of the release system must be red and the direction of release must be indicated. The release grips must be easy to reach. Furthermore, the Iron Heart must resist a load of 300kg without de-formation and without losing functionality. The same applies to the safety leash with a load of 150kg. The system is tested in the worst sandy and salty conditions.

Still lots of actual systems on the market are not able to reach this norm! Some systems just explode under the pressure.

The Sliding Stopper and the Stopper Ball permit you to adjust the depower lines on the water. Particularly in light wind conditions you will be more comfortable if you do not have to constantly hold the weight of the bar. It has two different settings for more and for less traction. To change the settings, all you need to do, is to take the ball of the depower lines, turn around the ball and reassemble it. The Sliding Stopper Ball also reduces wear on the depower lines. Caution: since this system is able to reduce the kites maximum depower, it should only be used on the water and at a safe distance from dangerous objects. The Free Sliding Stopper is easy to operate with one hand.

micRO hOOK / micRO lOOp

To activate this bar feature, you need the Micro Hook upgrade kit. The Micro Hook system allows a way of riding, with the North bar permanently hooked in. This setup transfers a larger percentage of the load to the harness and reduces arm fatigue. To connect or disconnect, pull the bar towards you and twist it. The Fix Loop is placed at an angle that makes accidental hoo-king impossible. The construction with Dyneema line inside the loop is more resistant and durable. In case of emergency simply pull the quick release mechanism at the iron heart and the kite will depower.

vARiO cleAT

North’s Vario Cleat offers an easy and precise way to control the kite’s power. The adjuster can be positioned anywhere on the depower line and allows you to customize the bar to your size and liking. The trim loop is attached to the counter piece at the stopper ball with a Velcro and doesn’t wrap around the center line during kiting.

flying lines

The flying lines developed in cooperation with FSE Robline were a com-plete novelty when they were first introduced on the kite market. After four years of experience and through testing by the most demanding kiters, North Kiteboarding schools and teamriders know, that they can always rely on these lines. Now the next evolution in kitelines has arrived. The FL-10. Long life lines, extremely robust and with highest durability.

Conventional lines get their stiffness from a coating that is damaged by repeated folding. If a line is folded, the coating (wax) is extruded and the line will always fold in the same spot. To prevent this, we weave a Monofill into our lines, that restores the original shape (Memory Effect) and ensures that the next time the line bends in a different spot.

If the line is only gently bent, it returns faster to its original shape and it becomes a little stiffer. This technology makes laying out the lines more comfortable and quicker. The increased breaking strength of 270 daN (ap-proximately 270kg) is an added bonus. To ensure that the lines are attached correctly we use Monofill in different colors. The connection points are dif-ferent to prevent wrong attaching.Lots of work for just a line – but these lines are your life insurance.

5th element

lOADeD 5Th l ine

The Rebel is a loaded 5th Line kite mean-ing that it flies with constant tension on the 5th line. This makes the Rebel incred-ibly direct when sheeting in and out and gives it a consistently solid and steady bar feel.

sAfeTy

Whether you ride unhooked, spin, try a water relaunch for the first time or practice a handle pass, all maneuvers, including the latest tricks, can now be performed with the safety leash of the 5th Element. As soon as you pull the Iron Heart or let go of the bar it slides up the safety line. The kite is then completely de-powered and comes down without twisting the lines.

RelAunch

The 5th Element allows you to re-launch the Vegas without having to swim towards the kite. From the nose down position, simply pull the 5th line to-wards you to get the kite to tip onto it‘s back while simultaneously pulling one back line. The kite will make it‘s way to the edge of the window and take off. The 5th Element also allows you to relaunch the Rhino and Rebel in light winds.

peRfORmAnce

The 5th Element stabilizes the kite’s arc and thus clearly increases perfor-mance. Enhanced profile stiffness brings considerable advantages in de-powered situations and increases the kite’s wind range. As a result, the kite flies closer to the edge of the wind window and responds more directly to steering impulses.

ReinfORceD ATTAchemenT pOinTs

The kite has reinforced attachment points at the leading edge and the 5th Element Bar is either attached to a single line or to a Y-shaped nose-line with a predetermined length. This system allows you to use different kite sizes with the same bar without making further adjustments.

TRipple v-cOnnecTiOn

Triple V-Connection: about 13 meters below the kite, the Triple V-Connec-tion converts an almost conventional four liner bar into the 5th Element Bar. The new Triple V construction has increased durability and less wear. The new stronger Dyneema lines are fed through a metal ring that reduces fric-tion and wear. The power frontline splits into two frontlines that run to the kite’s right and left tips.

inTeRnAl l ine sysTem

The 5th Element system has three lines coming through the newly designed bar hole. Two of them are the depower lines that end at the Vario Cleat, the depower system, and continue from there as the power frontline. The third line is our safety frontline to which you attach your safety leash. When you release the safety mechanism, the bar slips up along this line and com-pletely depowers the kite.

5Th elemenT

In its fifth year, North Kiteboarding’s 5th Element has been thoroughly redesigned for even more effective safety release functions. The reworked IronHeart and Safety Leash require lower release forces and are now more functional even in san-dy and wet saltwater conditions. The new Sliding Stopper and Stopperball with the double depower line ensure a perfect hold of the bar in all situations. The smaller and lighter VarioCleat helps you to adjust the bar fast and easy for a perfect fit. Riders of all levels, from pros to newcomers, will benefit from the advantages of the new 2010 5th Element bar setup

3D WOOD CARBOn CAp SAnDWiCh

2010 is a big leap forward in board technology as North Kiteboarding introduces the 3D Wood Carbon Cap Sandwich in combination with the Responsive Center Flex. Combining the unique properties of wood core and carbon fiber, with an advanced flex pattern from a CNC milled 3D deck and concave bottom, the 2010 North Kiteboard range is setting a new standard in performance, comfort and durability.

TeChnOlOgy-leADeR

The unique thing about the 3D Wood Carbon Cap Sandwich is the fully 3D shaped wood core with the advanced deck flex pattern and concave bottom. This type of advanced step cap sandwich construction, in combination with a concave bottom has previously only been possible to manufacture with foam cores, which have certain limitations regarding flex, core thickness and shear strength. Thanks to our strong R&D focus and collaboration with one of the world’s leading snowboard factories, North Kiteboarding is the first company in the world to introduce 3D Wood Carbon Cap Sandwich. This technology opens up a new door for flex development. In terms of kiteboards it means a significant performance boost and a whole new level of comfort for the rider.

COMFORTThe strong, fibrous structure of the wood core allow for a thinner core profile and a higher amount of bending compared with a traditional foam core, without the risk of breakage. The result is a board with a greater amount of flex, working as an active suspension while riding, providing a smooth and controlled feeling even through rough water.

RESPONSIVENESSThanks to the natural flex characteristics and spring back of the wood core, our new boards have a responsive and lively feel on the water, without sacrificing the comfort. To get that extra boost in the pop we’ve added carbon fiber beams on the Jaime and Pro Series. A further step in technology is the Responsive Center Flex. The result is a highly responsive, yet still forgiving board, with instant feedback to the rider’s input.

CONTROLThe 3D Wood Carbon Cap Sandwich construction has a higher amount of flex and torsion than a traditional foam core. This

allows the board to quickly adapt to every impact from the water surface, giving the rider more space for mistakes, without the risk of loosing control. What the rider will experience is a board that’s easy to set up for take off and forgiving in the landings, and maintains good grip when riding full speed through choppy water. On the Jaime and XRide, the concave bottom keeps the board sucked to the surface of the water while effortlessly blasting through knee high chop, drawing full speed turns or carving in the waves.

STRENGTHOur wood core has three times higher density than a standard foam core, and much greater strength and impact resistance. Fatigue resistance, the ability to withstand stress caused by thousands of impacts and hard landings over time, has been significantly improved. Heel dents, split cores and cracked laminates are history. The new 3D Wood Carbon Cap Sandwich is the strongest construction we’ve ever made, reassuring a long life and functionality for your kiteboard.

3D DeCkS ReSpOnSiVe CenTeR FleX (SeleCT / TeAm SeRieS / JAime / XRiDe / SOleil )

For 2011 we have still enhanced the feeling and performance of our twin tips through innovation. A harmonic flex from front to rear means that the rocker line is actively changing and adapting to the water’s surface, which gives you pro active dampening and absorption of chop. Furthermore, the continuous flex offers increased power flow for hard pop, making takeoffs easier and more predictable. Our torsional Absorption System offers smoother, stickier landings, a more solid feel through the water, more grip on the heelside edge and consequently better upwind performance. Flex Tips give you more control when combined with our lower bottom curve as well as responsive, controllable pop and cushioned, comfortable landings.

A FeW WORDS WiTh nORTh ShApeR Sky SOlBACh…

Q: SO WhAT'S The SCOOp On The neW SuRFBOARDS FOR 2011?A: Well, basically we have three different lines of boards to that are aimed to excel in different conditions. A surfboard that works amazingly in big waves may lack that magical element to excel in small waves. And your magic onshore wave board will most likely be easily overpowered in big surf or when you're trying to handle a lot of power. So the North surfboard range for 2011 is collection of three lines of boards that each have a pretty wide range of use in different conditions but definitely have a performance sweet spot where they really excel.

Q: Ok. SO leT'S Begin WiTh The neW kOnTACT. WhAT'S neW AnD hOW hAS iS ChAngeD FROm lAST yeAR?A: Well its basically a refinement of last year's Kontact. The dimensions have changed slightly and there are subtle changes in outline and more substantial changes in the rocker. This board is designed around getting the maximum amount of drive and handling a lot of speed when you're riding in big, bumpy surf or using your kite to drive you through your turns. Besides aesthetics, the roundpintail has the function of riding low and deep and gives you positive and predictable control. If you were paddle surfing, the Kontact would be your "stepup" board or "gun". In kiting however, having one of these babies in your quiver doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be riding huge waves, since we are able to generate our own speed and power using the kite. So the Kontact is also good for riders who rely on the kite a lot, making it easier to retain control when cranking your self through turns in the chop. In general its a pretty straight forward design; Single concave and a nice blend of subtle curves. No sharp edges and no breaks in the rocker or outline. Just sleek and fast.

Q: TheRe'S A neW BOARD CAlleD The Whip. WhAT iS ThiS BOARD All ABOuT?The new Whip was basically born out of the desire to have a short, fat, little board that would make small waves fun. It's kind of an "alternative" shape I guess you would say; It's short and wide and you can get away with riding a much shorter board than you normally would. I guess it was partly inspired by the movement that has been taking place in pro surfing over the past couple of years with everyone moving towards shorter and wider designs. It makes shitty days really fun and gives you the feeling you're ripping even when it's 1 foot. Its fast and super loose but surprisingly still has drive when you need to plant a rail and draw out a turn. I've actually ridden the 5'7" in 8 foot surf with no problems. It's actually a high performance little board hidden inside a small stubby design. Even when the the waves don't have a lot of power, this board feels super lively and I still get excited every time I ride it. It gyrates speed in an instant and the quad fins really give it a loose and "skatey" feel. It's so short that it really fits in the pocket in small waves nicely.

Q: AnD WhAT ABOuT The neW WAm?I'm really excited about the new WAM. Its the "allrounder" and is pretty much the one board that you could take on a trip to almost anywhere in the world and it would work. It's probably my most used board and it's really versatile. The dimensions are similar to last year's WAM, but otherwise it has been completely redesigned. Squash tail, continuous rocker and single to double concave with semi boxy rails. It's got a pretty full outline, so it works great to generate speed in small surf but the pulled in squash tail still gives you tons of drive to push your turns hard with lots of hold. It's also got a tri/quad fin setup, meaning you can ride it as either a quad or a thruster configuration. The quad setup works awesome in small waves and really frees the board up for quick rail to rail transition and a skatey feel. Then, if you want a more locked in, positive backfooted feel, you can swap it to a thruster. This just adds more versatility to an already super versatile design.

iS The COnSTRuCTiOn DiFFeRenT ThAn in The pAST?Yes it is different. All of the surfboards are made using an epoxy sandwich construction. The advantage of this construction is that, basically, it is lighter and stronger than conventional surfboard construction. However, it is often difficult to achieve the same "feel" as a conventional board. Our new layups are optimized to achieve the desired amount of flex and dampening while still keeping it light and lively (and not too hard or bouncy feeling). The boards also have a bamboo skin top and bottom. The bamboo itself has excellent dampening properties which work wonders for the overall feel of the board. The bamboo skin also makes the boards really resistant to pressure dents and dings. There are also reinforcements under the heels as well as on ding prone areas like the nose and tail and around the fin boxes.

DeTAilkOnTACT

The Kontact is ideal for big, powerful waves or choppy water and high winds. A great weapon for advanced riders and riders who love precise control. The Kontact is ideal for strapped riding and surfers looking for maximum control at high speeds. Long and narrow, the rounded pin tail rides low and smooth through the water. The thin, knifey rail line offers plenty of grip to drive off the bottom with seemingly limitless hold to grind through high speed top turns. The Kontact is designed around the premiss that kiting allows you to ride with much more power than you ever would surfing and the Kontact is all about harnessing that energy and exploiting it. If you are looking to drive hard through high speed turns with tons of control at high winds and in big surf, the Kontact is the one and only!

AiR STyleR - Soul / Pop

Soul Art. No.: 441108306

Pop Art. No.: 441108307

AiR-STyleR 2011

In the newest version of the North harnesses we were able to enhance the fit by optimizing the position of the Molded Flex Zone Patches. In addition to the Molded Waist Support Patches, the air bubble back padding makes sure that the harness adapts perfectly to the shape of the body. Slipping was yesterday and the wearing comfort remains unsurpassed! If dangling straps bothered you in the past you’ll no longer find a reason to complain: the strap pockets were enlarged sufficiently to accommodate all excess straps.

SPECIAL FEATURES: – Lycra covered half mold in inside in combination with airbladder – Molded flexzone patches for more moving comfort – Flex belt construction with neoprene on inside for maximum comfort – Full protected hookplate – New shorter hook for more reactive bar feel and control – Double hook attachment for better load distribution – Two colorways: Pop and Soul

That definitely sounds like something that everybody should enjoy from time to time. In kiteboarding this is absolutely possible. However, an uncomfortable harness that doesn’t fit properly or even chafes the skin because the right material was left out in the wrong places, can ruin it all. We at North, don’t like that either and we’d get endless complaints from our team riders, if they had to kite with sore skin. Luckily for all of us, Jaime’s waist is still soft as a baby’s butt and none of our contest riders, neither Mario nor Cesar or Tom, have ever sent us photos of bruises on their perfect bodies. Ever since we introduced our front plate, North harnesses have been among the most comfortable products of their kind. Overdesigned products are not our world. Functionality, on the other hand, is indispensable! This is what you feel from the very first moment on, but also after lots of great sessions on the water.

All NKB harnesses come with the North Wonder.Bar. With its closure at the harness hook, the strap only needs to be adjusted once. The U-claw makes it really easy to get in and out of the harness. The system ensures optimum safety, even under extreme conditions.

The new shorter hook ensures more reactive bar feel and control.

The Performer permits a lower hook position compared to waist harnesses. Apart from neoprene paddings and an individually adjustable back position, the Performer also features the Full Protection Hook Mounting System to protect you from bruises and rib injuries.

SPECIAL FEATURES: – Full seat harness with maximum comfort at a low hook position – Neoprene flexzone patches for more moving comfort – Full protected Hookplate – Comfortable Neoprene legstraps – New shorter Hook for more reactive bar feel and control – Two colorways: Pop and Soul

impACT VeST 2011– Nr XXXXX

A little padding around the chest does not make an impact vest. Only a perfectly fitting vest will reliably protect you, when you hit the water surface. We used a double internal Velcro neoprene strap system that can be individually adjusted for a perfect fit. Once adjusted, the vest is easy to put on and take off by opening the strap at the lateral zip. Additional connection straps keep the vest firmly attached to the harness and hold the vest at the correct position. As always, we offer two versions of the Impact Vest: one for seat harnesses and one for waist harnesses (without protection in the harness area).

The backpack for your travels, the beach and the office, is a little larger, to make sure that you really have enough space to pack everything you need. A large main compartment provides sufficient storage space and an outside pocket holds smaller stuff, such as pens or your iPod. The integrated padded laptop case is accessible, both from the inside and from the outside, for fast and easy access to your 17´´ notebook. The interior sunglasses pocket is padded for protection. The daypack comes with a transparent Liquid Bag with one liter storage space that is compatible with common hand luggage regulations.

TRAVelBAg SmAll 2011 – Nr XXXXX

A wonderful bag for short trips or as hand luggage on longer journeys. Most airlines should permit this bag as hand luggage. The detachable backpack on the front holds your books, mags, iPod and laptop. The laptop case is accessible from the inside and from the outside and your sunglasses are also well protected in the interior padded sunglass pocket. More comfort and ease don’t fit into a bag.

BACkSTAllThe kite loses power and flies in a back ward direction. Letting go of the control bar can end the backstall.

BAR pReSSuReSame as Sheeting Force

Belly DOWnThe position used for leaving a kite on the beach unattended. The leading edge upwind and the underside of the kite is down.

Belly upThe position a kite sometimes takes during relaunch when the leading edge is toward the rider and the underside of the kite is toward the sky.

BOWA kite design originally defined by four key characteristics: (a) a flatter arc than previously was common, (b) swept back out line, (c) bridle supporting the leading edge and (d) pullies on the control bar needed to reduce bar stroke.

BRiDleAny of a number of systems where the kite leading edge is supported by a web of lines.

C kiTe The original type of 4line kite with a “C” shaped arc and little or no sweep in the outline.

CAnOpy ShApeSThis usually refers to the profile of the canopy – the curve that it forces the wind to take while traveling from leading edge to trailing edge.

CRiSpA kite that powers up with a small bar motion is crisp. A kite can be so crisp that is is uncomfortable to fly. This is a common problem with kites that are 8 meters and smaller.

DACROn(where it makes sence, where it’s just a gimmick, where it’s stupid)Dacron is useful in areas of high load, such as inflated elements and tip reinforcements. It is also useful for improving control over canopy profile in certain critically important areas – mostly areas where a flat profile is desired.

DelTAIn engineering the term ‘delta’ is symbolized by a triangle. A delta kite has an outline that looks somewhat trangular from the side, hence the name.

DepOWeRWhen the rider sheets out the kite depowers.

DepOWeR STROkeThe distance traveled by the control bar when going from completely sheeted in to completely sheeted out.

FlAT DelTAA delta outline combined with a flat arc.

Flying SpeeDThe speed of a kite through the wind window. Small kites tend to have very high flying speed. Big kites tend to have slower flying speed.

hAng Time A kite that is good at keeping the rider hanging in the air during a jump is said to have good hang time.r

high enDThe ability of a kite to comfortably handle wind strengths at the top end of its design range.

hyBRiDThis term signifies kites that are neither “bow” nor “C” kites. This term is not so useful anymore as fewer and fewer kites fit the original definition of a bow.

l iFTA kite that picks a rider up quickly and high is said to have good lift.

l ineAR pOWeR DeVelOpmenTKite power increases in a linear manner as the bar is sheeted in.

l ineAR BAR FeelThe bar pressure increases in a linear manner as the bar is sheeted in. A kite can have linear power development without having linear bar feel.

lOW enDThe power a kite can develope at the lower end of its designed wind range.mini BRiDleA minimal bridle.

muShy A kite that powers up too gradually as the bar is sheeted in is said to have mushy bar feel.

nOSe DOWnThe position a kite takes during relaunch when the leading edge is on the water and the underside of the kite is facing the rider.

OVeRSheeTingSheeting in too much – pulling the control bar too close to the body – can cause a kite to lose power and backstall.

pOWeR upWhen the rider sheets in the kite powers up.

RelAunChThe process of causing a kite to fly up from the water after a crash.

RiDing COmFORTA completely subjective issue. A kite that is comfortable for a novice may be boring for an expert, while a kite that is comfortable for an expert may to too challenging for an intermediate rider.

SheeTing FORCe The overall force required to pull the control bar closer to the rider’s body.

STABil iTyA kite is said to be stable if it behaves in a desirable and predictable way throughout its design wind range and even in wind that is unsteady.

SheeTingWhile flying a four or fiveline kite, to increase or decrease kite power by moving the control bar closer to or farther from the rider’s body. To “Sheet in” is to move the bar closer to the body. To “Sheet out” is to move the bar farther from the body.

STeeRing FORCeThe force required to turn the kite. This can be broken down into (a) the force required to initiate a turn and (b) the force required to maintain turning speed. This can be further broken down into the force required when the kite is sheeted in verses sheeted out.

STeeRing pReCiSiOnA measure of how quick and linear the response of the kite is to steering input. Linear response means the stronger the input, the quicker the steering response. Quick and linear is good for wave riding but not so much for unhooked tricks.

unhOOkeDRiding or performing tricks while the riders harness hook is not engaged with the rider’s chickenloop.

unhOOkeD hAnDling Performing tricks while unhooked requires a kite that has good unhooked handing. Such a kite is stable and relatively unresponsive to minor steering inputs. The kite should turn quickly when steered very positively (as for kite loops), but should not turn when given light, spurious steering inputs. The kite should also not generate big spikes in power when looping and it should be highly resistant to backstall.

AppARelAfter some years now of stylish NKB kiteboarding clothing, we are convinced to go on with the real styles of kiteboarding and we finally can see more and more people wearing real kiteboarding clothes!

We still constantly travel in all kiteable countries of this planet – Mauritius, Hawaii, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Austria, Australia, the Caribbean, Indo, …This list could go on forever and opens your mind.

Whether we unpacked our kites on a beautiful ocean, at a wave spot or whether we came to a lake to freeride, we always noticed one thing. When we were chilling on the beach in the evening, sat in a restaurant or bar or when we were at a party, we always wondered about the same thing: where was the true kiter gear for all those riders out there? We could not spot it anywhere. It was clear that something had to be done, so we created the North Apparel Collection already in 2009. More color, more style. Also this year, we did still more colors and even greater fabrics. Embroideries, prints, beads, patches, all over prints, embossing and style... North always rocks!

Be true to yourself! Be a real kiter! Wear your love to kiteboarding and show it to the world out there!

Really nice to see, is that still more and more girls join the world of kitesurfing. And with these girls, more and more needs in fashion enter to the male world of kiteboarding. We support all the girls and try to have lots of different styles for every self confident girl. Not just to wear at the beach – but wherever you are!

As not every girl wants total sensory overload with regards to clothing, the result 2011 is a mix of modern and classic, punk and fancy, with many details and with the right item for every occasion. Designed by women for women. Show the boyz, who’s wearing the breeches!
