Native Americans have lived there for thousands of years,a long before Europeans went there.

In 1492,Christopher Columbus went to America.

In 1607,English people went to Jamestown,Virginia.This was the First successful English town in North America.

In 1775,at Lexington and Concord,a war b/w the colonies and England called the Revolutionary War started.

This war started because the American Colonists believed that they were not being treated equally to the Englishmen living in England.

In the early 1800s,the new nation faced many controversial issues,such as slavery.

In 1861,several states in the South left the United States to start a new country called the”CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA”.

This caused the American Civil War.

After World War II,the US and the Soviet Union entered a time known as the COLD WAR.

During the 1980s,the US was dominated by the Reagan Era led by President Ronald Reagan.

In 2009,Barack Obama became the first black president of the United States.

Appalacian Mountains extend from the Gulf of St.Lawrence to the Gulf of Mexico.Appalachian region is rich in minerals and has many fertile river valleys.

Mexico is North America’s third largest country lying south of U.S.A.

It is a land of volcanic mountains and high plateaus.

Mexico is about three times the size of Texas.

Modern Cities,Volcanoes,snow-capped mountains,and beautiful beaches all contribute tomake Mexico an exciting land of beauty.

Like a great stone wall,a range of mountain winds through Central America and deep into Mexico.

There it splits into two ranges,the Sierra Madre Oriental(East)and Occidental(West).

A cool high plateau,500 miles(805 km.)wide and 1,500 miles(2,415 km.) long,is found b/w these ranges.

Mountain cover two-thirds of the country.

22 Mexican mountain peaks are more than 2 miles high.

The highest of all are three peaks,Orizaba(18,855 ft.),Popocatipetl,and Ixtacihuatl.

Mexico’s people descend from the Indian peoples who farmed and traded in Mexico before the Spaniards came.

One-half of all Mexicans live in big towns and cities,the other half in villages,farms,and ranches.

In the cities,many people live and work in modern buildings and carry on a busy industry.

In rural areas,campesinos or farm workers tend plots to feed their families or work for pay on the commercial farms.

The old hacienda system linger today in large landholdings where campesinos still work.

The most important industries in Mexico is Tourism.

The first European settlers found patches of green in fjords and coastal meadows.

To attract settlers fro Iceland,they called the place”Greenland.

As of 2014, Puerto Rico remains a U.S. territory, although a 2012 referendum showed a majority (54% of the electorate) in favor of a change in status, with full statehood the preferred option.
