Our faith community changed lives this Lent, and CRS Rice Bowl wants to say thank you! A total of $454 was collected and will be sent to Catholic Relief Services.

The Word Among Us has decided to make available (without subscription) all the material on their magazine’s website, https://wau.org, including their daily meditations, and with permission of the USCCB, to post the daily Mass readings. Prayer requests can be submitted to them at wau.org/prayer and they will include those requests in their 3X weekly prayer times.

5th Sunday of Easter Do not let your hearts be troubled. (John 14:1)

N ot troubled? That’s hard to imagine! Jesus had just predicted that Judas would betray him and Peter would deny him. He had just told the disciples that he would be with them “only a little while longer” (John 13:33).

Something really big was about to happen. Of course the disciples were shaken up! Anyone would be upset and anxious.

Be at peace, Jesus said. Don’t be afraid. It’s the most common command in the Gospels. Much of the time, Jesus says it when the disciples catch a glimpse of his glory. Think about his Transfiguration, or when he walked on water. But this time, Jesus reassures them because he is leaving. You are used to having me walk with you in one way, he seemed to be saying, but once I’m gone, I’ll be with you in a new way. I will never leave you, even if you have a hard time finding me the way you used to.

Jesus wanted his friends to know that even though he would not be with them in bodily form, he wasn’t really leaving them alone. He would be with them through the Holy Spirit living inside them. He would be with them in his Eucharistic presence. He would be present in their brothers and sisters in the faith. They just needed to learn to see him in a different way.

Like the disciples, we experience change in our lives—change that might make us wonder if Jesus is still with us. The things we are accustomed to can get disrupted. Our youngest child moves out of the house and goes off to college. The main breadwinner in the family loses their job, and we have to relocate to a new city. But Jesus hasn’t left us alone during these times. He wants to give us eyes to see him in every situation.

So take his words to heart: Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me (John 14:1).

PRAYER IN TIME OF PANDEMIC

God, whose Only Begotten Son bore the weight of human suffering for our salvation, hear the prayers of your Church for our sick brothers and sisters and deliver us from this time of trial. Open our ears and our hearts to the voice of your Son: Be not afraid, for I am with you always. Bless all doctors and nurses, researchers and public servants; give us the wisdom to do what is right and the faith to endure this hour, that we might gather once again to praise your name in the heart of your Church, delivered from all distress and confident in your mercy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen

We wish all the mothers of our parish God’s blessing on this day

dedicated to you.

Happy Mother’s Day!!! My friends what now seems to me like an eternity ago, since the outbreak of Coronavirus, I saw the cutest little boy in my absolute favorite store, Cabela’s! He was with his mother who I could immediately tell took him into the store to be nice, because as she looked around, I couldn’t help but notice her look of complete disgust as she viewed all the various works of taxidermy. Her little boy however, was enthralled! He kept saying over and over, “Soon I’m going to hunt with Daddy!” To which the mother replied, “Daddy is crazy”.

As an avid hunter myself, I felt tremendous pride for the little boy’s father. As a priest, I felt overwhelming compassion for his poor mother. I marveled as I watched them and in them, the beauty of motherhood!

Isn’t that what it’s all about?! She was obviously sacrificing her own wants and desires in that moment, to facilitate a passionate interest her son possessed that she didn’t necessarily share in common. In essence, she was completely miserable in that store, however, I would propose, she was delighted at the same time. Delighted, because she was doing something very special for her little boy.

Not long after watching them came those four dreaded words that no little boy who is having fun at Cabela’s ever wants to hear, namely, “We have to go”. Let me tell you that once loving, innocent, sweet, impressionable, child instantaneously transformed into a gremlin! He had an epic meltdown and was swiftly carried out of the store in his mother’s loving arms.

Once again, I marveled at his mother. I wondered how many times in his short lifetime that she was forced to endure that. I smiled because I was convinced before she even brought him into the store, she knew that’s how it would end. In the end, my heart smiled, because she did it anyway!

As I share this story with you, I can’t help but think of the Mother we all share in common. Our Blessed Mother Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, Mother of us all! The angel Gabriel appears to her at the Annunciation and she says yes! Later, the prophecy of Simeon, the flight into Egypt, the frantic search for the Christ Child in Jerusalem, meeting Him on His Way to Calvary, standing at the foot of His Cross, His death on the Cross, and finally His burial in the tomb. In each one of these moments of sorrow, Mary says yes, she does it anyway.

Mary never falters, she never waivers, but only strives to continuously adhere to the Divine Will, which ultimately brings forth the Salvation of the World! She is the model par excellence of motherhood. As we celebrate our moms this Mother’s Day, let us fervently implore her intercession for all of them.

That she may go to her Divine Son Jesus and ask that they be given all the graces and blessings necessary to follow her own example of Divine Motherhood. Finally, for the mothers who have gone before us in faith, that she may at the side of her Son, graciously welcome them home to the Kingdom of Heaven forevermore!
