On April 18, 2012,Southern Wesleyan University

    hosted a seminar by North

    Augusta area businessman

    Ken Kehr, who specializes

    in making businesses better

    through affordable training

    solutions for employers and

    their employees. As a certified

    Growth Coach, Kehr helps

    his clients attain four distinct

    goals: to increase profitability,

    to work more efficiently, to

    cultivate stronger business

    relationships, and to obtain

    personal fulfillment in the

    work place. After a brief

    overview of his objectives as

    a coach, Kehr provided each

    attendee a complementarybehavioral survey that

    provided a simple assessment

    of individual strengths and

    weaknesses.

    The survey, based on the

    DISC system, measures ones

    workplace personality within

    four behavioral spheres,

    dominant, influencing,

    steady, or conscientious

    traits. Knowing ones

    prevailing behavioral

    style, says Kehr, allows an

    individual to identify areas

of strength and learn ways to

    improve ones shortcomings.

    Moreover, understanding the

    dominant behavioral styles

    of others promotes moreeffective communication

    and collaboration in the

    workplace. The DISC

    evaluation is only one of

    many business tools Kehr

    uses to improve morale in

    the workplace. For more

    information about The

    Growth Coach program,

    please visit Kehrs website at

The world we live in is

    moving at faster pace than

    ever before. We have every-

thing that we need at the tips

of our fingers, but is that

    always a good thing?

    Several weeks ago, during

    our Small Business Roundta-

    ble, Kim Romaner was offer-

    ing some time management

    tips. One of the suggestions

was to limit the number of

    times you respond to emails,

and only stop a couple of

times per day to reply to

    emails. I was offended by

    that suggestion. How can you

not at least read the email the

very second it pops into your

    inbox? Insanity, I tell you.

    As I expressed my disagree-

ment, it was brought to my

attention that I have a bad

habit, a very bad habit of notonly checking emails during

    a conversation, but actually

    returning emails during con-

    versations. And the very

    nice person that dared accuse

me of such was exactly right.

As I look back, I see how

    incredibly rude that was, but

at the time, I was being effi-

    cient. It was multi-tasking at

    its finest.

Now that I am aware of the

    habit (sickness), I realize how

    chronic my condition was.

And now that I recognize the

    signs and symptoms, I see

that there are many others that

    have the same problem. We

cant unplug, ever. It cant be

    healthy.

I have thought about this a

fair amount the last couple of

weeks, and tried to be more

    respectful. This being said,

    there is a bigger problem

building. The problem isbeing able to strike a balance

    between embracing newer

    technologies and being con-

    sumed by the technology.

    The balance is difficult. How

can we use the tools we have

    to work more efficiently or

    work smarter versus being

    consumed and absolutely

    plugged-in all the time.

I cannot tell you where the

    line-in-the-sand is for you,

    but I would encourage you

to figure it out. Take some

time to engage in real con-

    versations whenever possible.

    Emails and texts and tweets

    and status updates have their

    place, but they cannot replace

    relationships.

In order to help you find

    your line-in-the-sand, com-

    plete the test below. The

    following questions are from

a longer survey. The link is

provided for you at the bot-tom. If you answer yes to

more than four of the follow-

ing, please follow the link to

    the full survey.

    Do you make a nervous

    habit out of refreshing your

inbox over and over, just in

    case someone emailed you in

    the last 45 seconds?

Do you freak out if youre

in a car and theres no GPS?

    Have you ever changed

    vacation plans based on wi-fi

    availability?

    Are there more than two

    portable electronic devices

    within reach right now?

    Do you buy things online

    that you could easily drive

across town to get in person?

Do you spend more time on

Facebook than you do in the

    presence of actual people?

When you sit down in a

coffee shop, do you tend to

    position yourself close to a

    power outlet just in case?

    Can you type text messages

    faster than you can handwrite

    the same words?

    Would you classify yourself

    as an expert multitasker?

Did you make it all the way

to the end of this quiz?
