The annual enter- prise programme sets out to encourage students in secondary and primary schools to research and manage their own business, with support from local business mentors. Now in its fourteenth year, a record number of 2,268 students from 23 secondary schools and eight primary schools including the North County are participating in the 2014/2015 programme, setting up and running their own businesses between now and the County Finals in March 2015. With the countdown on to the Fingal County Final, the Christmas period is a key opportunity for the young entrepre- neurs to drive sales and grow their businesses. The secondary schools programme is sponsored, for the sixth consecutive year, by the Dublin and Dun Laoghaire Education and Training Board. Fingal’s Student Enterprise Programme is part of the ‘National Student Enterprise Awards’ competi- tion, which annually sees over 17,000 students compete on the national stage. Category winners from the Fingal County Finals will advance to the National Student Enterprise Awards, to be held in April 2015. Oisin Geoghegan, Head of Enterprise, the County Council said: “With the support of the schools, the local busi- ness community, and sponsors, these students, guided by our mentoring programme, are gaining invaluable experience in the world of business,” he said. Molly McNally, the six year old Balbriggan girl, who suffers from Stage 4 Neuroblastoma, a rare children’s cancer, is continuing to make very promising progress. Molly’s father, Gerry explained to the County Leader that Molly is having her last assessment this week, and the hope is that the one-and-a-half cancer hot spots on her skull will have gone. Fianna Fail, who seem to be steadying, if not gaining in popularity with the electorate, according to the latest opinion poll, have decided to call a Selection Convention to take place on Tuesday, 16th December at the Carnegie Court Hotel in Swords. The purpose of the convention is to select candi- dates to stand for the party in the new five seater constituency of Dublin Fingal at the next general election. Our information is that the local Fianna Fail organisation has been instructed to select just one candidate. We have been told that Senator Darragh O’Brien, who is particu- larly favoured by party leader, Micheál Martin, will run unopposed. Indeed Mr Martin appointed him as his choice for the Seanad, after O’Brien failed to hold on to his seat at the last general election. Our local Fianna Fail sources say that this is a ploy to ensure that O’Brien is selected, thus preventing former TD, Michael Kennedy from throwing his hat into the ring. Both Kennedy and O’Brien lost their seats at the last general election, when Fianna Fail failed to return any TDs in Dublin. According to our sources, party HQ does not intend to miss out on the sizeable Fianna Fail vote in the northern end of the constituency. The plan is that head office will impose newly elected Balbriggan coun- cillor, Brian Dennehy to run, closer to the election date. This would mean that O’Brien will have a clear run in the southern area of the constituency, while Dennehy would be expected to hold the Fianna Fail votes in the northern end of the constituency. There is a fear that, without a Fianna Fail candidate in the northern end of the constituency, the strong Sinn Fein candidate will mop up the Fianna Fail vote. All is not well in Fianna Fail Dublin Fingal, with key activists resigning their positions. The party was involved in a selection controversy earlier in the year, when Clara la Combre from Donabate, was the clear favourite to contest the local elections for Swords Ward in last May’s local elec- tions. Reilly’s InterventionIn Childcare CostsWelcomedStart Strong has welcomed the Minister forChildren and Youth Affairs, James Reilly’s recentstatement, that he will not introduce tax credits asa way of reducing the high cost of ‘childcare’ forparents. Start Strong is a coali-tion of organisations and indi-viduals seeking to advancechildren’s early care and educa-tion in Ireland. Ciairín de Buis,Director of Start Strong said:“We need to do somethingabout the cost of ‘childcare, butwe need to do it in a way thatbenefits children. Parents herepay some of the highest costs in the world, but thatis no guarantee that their children are getting ahigh-quality service. The quality of early care andeducation is very variable in this country. We needto use government funding as a way to ensure nochild is in a poor quality service.”“As a country, we invest very little in our young chil-dren. The Organisation for Economic Co-operationand Development (OECD) recommends spendingone per cent of GDP on ‘childcare’ services. Irelandspends 0.2 per cent of GDP. “The debate sparkedby the Donna Hartnett letter isn’t just about thehigh cost of ‘childcare’ though. It’s about how webalance our work and family commitments. Weneed more flexible working arrangements andlonger periods of paid leave for parents. Mostparents are just trying to do their best for their chil-dren and they need to be supported to do that,”added Ms de Buis.

Ban On Parking Of Commercial Vehicles In SwordsSwords councillor,Duncan Smith (Lab) isdelighted to reportthat the CountyCouncil has agreed toimpose parkingrestrictions oncommercial vehicleson a busy road, adja-cent to Applewoodestate in Swords. The road in question isthe main access road, which passes byThornleigh EducateTogether NationalSchool, and is one ofthe busiest roads inthe area. Smith, who isresident in the area, told the CountyLeader, “This is a verypopular road, which isused regularly by fami-lies with children usingthe school, the play-ground, the all-weather facility and

the park. We’ve had aproblem over the pastnumber of years, withlarge abandoned vehi-cles on the road. Thissummer, in particular,

was a point in ques-tion, with large whitecoaches being aban-doned and causing lineof sight problems formotorists and childrencrossing the road, especially between

Ashton Broc andThornleigh,” he said.“On a particular nightlast September, one ofthe coaches was setalight, and it was onlythen that it wasremoved. Since I waselected, I have beenpushing to have athree ton vehicle limiton this road. TheCouncil cannot agreeto this, but they haveagreed to a three tonparking limit. So if anylarge vehicles are

abandoned here, wewill now have thepower to remove them, and this will beenforced by the Gardai. This has been agreed,as a result of my repre-sentations last week. This will give somecomfort, because we,in the newer areas ofSwords, seem to beafflicted with aban-doned cars and othervehicles taking upshared parking spacesin estates, and areaslike this,” heconcluded.

alludes to conserva-tion being a

factor in theintroduction ofthis tax. It isappalling that40 per cent of

through leakingpipes. Instead of thegovernment investing inthe aged and decrepitinfrastructure, it hasspent half a billion euro ofthe National PensionReserve Fund, in settingup a quango that is not fitfor purpose and in theinstallation of watermeters,” she continued. It’s good to see our MEPsplaying an important part

in the development ofpolicy in Europe, and onecan expect that theCommission will get apretty strong report fromher. Just as theGovernment has gottenitself in real troublesetting up Irish Water incompliance with thedictates of Europe, wenote that theCommission hasextended by threemonths, the period inwhich France Belgiumand Italy are required todemonstrate that theyare working to bring theirbudgets into line withBudget rules. The big question is willthree months be enough,or will some furtherfudging of the marginsbe required. Berlusconithe former Italian PMthinks so, as heannounces that thecreation of a secondcurrency is requiredthereby allowing Italyregain part of monetarysovereignty. What hemeans is money they canprint themselves.

However, thepanic buying has goneout of a market that hadseen an average houseappreciate by almost 31per cent over the past 18months,” he said.“Demand and prices intier two, which is the

S ian and Eric met 14 years ago and have twoboys aged 7 and 9. In May 2012, Eric wasdiagnosed with leukaemia. After two bone

marrow transplants and the cancer returning in thesummer, he then developed an infection that manytransplant patients suffer from after the operationand unfortunately the condition was in the liver.Sian was desperate to find a place to stay overChristmas period to take away the pressure that’swas on the family. After hearing her interview on alocal radio programme the managing director of Bewleys and Moran Hotel Group got in touch. Heoffered Sian and the children a place to stay in Bewleys of Ballsbridge over the festive season andextended his gesture outside the holidays. He also organised VIP trips for the children to RDSWonderland and assured that Santa would visit the hotel.

in December 2013, Pope Francis gave Christmas presents to 2000 immi-grants at a shelter near the Vatican. Each gift package contained aChristmas card signed by Pope Francis, postal stamps and pre-paid inter-national calling cards and a free day-pass for the metro in Rome. The pack-ages were sent to allow them to write letters and call their loved onesduring Christmas. The presents were distributed by Papal almoner

Archbishop Konrad Krajewski and sisters at the shelter.

Eamon, has for the last six years visited the Carrick Dog Shelter with a giftof food for the rescue dogs homed there every Christmas. He does itcompletely out of his own pocket, saving up a little of his pension moneyeach week.

Ryan Suffern, an 8-year-old boy, wrote an extremely selfless letter. He sent an early plea toSanta Claus, asking him if he could intervene and stop his twin sister from being bullied atschool.

A NYPD Officer, DePrimo, was stationed at his foot post, when he noticed an elderlyhomeless man, shoeless, on the sidewalk. He went to the nearby shoe store andpurchased $100 all-weather boots and socks for him.

Two 9-year-old twin brothers from North Carolina gave up their Christmas money topurchase supplies and, with help of their grandmother, made 10 fleece blankets to distributeto hurricane victims.

7-year-old Delaney Brown was diagnosed with leukaemia. One of her Christmas wisheswas to hear real carol singers outside her home. Her mother set up a Facebook page to askfor help. On 22nd December, some 7,000-8,000 people showed up in the small town ofWest Reading to sing. The carol singers finished off with a rendition of “Happy Birthday”,to celebrate her birthday two days before.

A few days before Christmas 1943, a German fighter pilot, Franz Stigler, spared a crippledAmerican pilot. The bomber of Charlie Brown was severely damaged by German fighters, so hecouldn’t keep up with the formation. Franz Stigler, a pilot of the German Luftwaffe, was orderedto shoot his crippled bomber down, but instead decided to allow him and his crew to fly back totheir airfield in England. 40 years later, both became friends and the friendship that the twodeveloped, lasted until their deaths several months apart.

During World War I, on around Christmas Day 1914, many German and British troops sangChristmas carols to each other across the line, as a result of of holiday celebrations in thetrenches and gestures of goodwill between enemies. It is also true that British and Germansoldiers played football together in No Man’s Land. The soldiers on theWestern front did not expect to celebrate on the battlefield, but even a worldwar could not destroy the Christmas spirit.

Joel Berlinsky, a 61-year-old real estate investor and landlord in Los Angeles, is giving histenants a $ 70 dollar rent break for Christmas for the last 15 years – a gesture that costshim more than $ 8,000, he does this to help single women with children in his units and togive them the opportunity to buy a gift for their children.

All year long, a family from Vancouver throws their extramoney into a jar. On Christmas Eve, they count the changethat usually comes in around $ 140. They exchange it for bigbills and go out for a late dinner. They order a nice $ 30dinner and then leave a $ 140 tip as a wonderful Christmassurprise, because they feel sorry for the server who has towork on Christmas Eve and isn’t able to be home with his

family. They carry out this tradition every year.

TheSociety, formed in 1944, was setup to assist Volunteers and theirfamily members who wereadversely affected by their partic-ipation in the events of EasterWeek 1916 and the subsequentWar for Independence. The Society is non-political,holding Easter Commemorationsand annual ceremonies markingthe Battle of Ashbourne. Some114 Fingal Volunteers of the 5thBattalion were arrested after theRaising and most were detainedin the Frongoch Prisoner of Warcamp in Wales for some months.Three of their number were killedin action during the week, whilesome leading members weresentenced to death but fortu-nately reprieved. The Fingal Battalion, under theCommand of Lusk school teacherThomas Ashe, successfully oper-ated capturing RIC barracks, disabling rail lines and communi-cations. On the Friday, theyattacked the RIC barracks atAshbourne forcing its surrender,

at which point they were counterattacked by a large number ofreinforcements drawn fromacross Meath. Although greatlyoutnumbered, they succeeded indefeating their attackers. In doingso they used tactics which wouldlater form the model which DickMulcahy, 2nd in command of thebattalion, deployed nationally inthe War of Independence. Under the Chairmanship of NoelMcAllister the Convention agreedan ambitious programme ofevents. The programme ofCultural, Educational, Sporting,Drama and Commemorations isdesigned to engage all during2015 and through to its culmina-tion in May 2016.Relatives of the deceasedmembers of the 5th Battalion andthe Fingal Brigade are asked toinvite home family and friendswho may be living abroad to joinin the events and commemora-tions. 1916REMEMBERING OURVOLUNTEERSREMEMBERING OURVOLUNTEERS

By Cathal Boland & Una O’Brien

This week’s profile is on Bennie McAllister,5th Batt. IRA and uncle of Noel McAllister,Chairman of Fingal Old IRA:“I joined the Irish Volunteers in the latterpart of 1913 or early 1914. I joined atDonabate. I cannot remember who waspresent on that particular date. Previous tothis, I was a member of the Ancient Order ofHibernians and the Volunteers really startedfrom them. On joining I made no declarationor took no oath. We were given MembershipCards. We paid a small weekly subscription– as far as I can remember 3d. per weektowards purchase of arms, equipment, uniform.”“The Company took part in the Howth Gun-Running. All paraded at Raheny and there joined the Dublin contingentwhen they came along. We understood it was field exercises we were goingon. We marched to Howth. On arrival at Howth Pier, we got to understand itwas gun-running we were on. Excitement now ran very high but good disci-pline was maintained. Our Company was drawn up across the Pier (townend) to prevent anyone except Volunteers getting on to the pier. Police andcoastguards tried to get on to the pier but were refused. The coastguardsthen sent up rockets. Either Skerries or Lusk Company relieved us and weproceeded down to get our rifles, but by this time they had all been givenout. I jumped on to the boat and succeeded in getting one and ten roundsof ammunition. Mr. Derham of Skerries also got one. We formed up againand marched to Raheny and home. I had the only rifle the Company got. Itwas the type known as Howth Mauser. Subsequently, the Companypurchased six or seven Italian (Garabaldi) rifles.”The above is part of the witness statement of Bennie McAllister, 5th Batt.IRA and uncle of Noel McAllister, Chairman of Fingal Old IRA.Bennie joined the Volunteer movement almost at its inception, in late 1913.He was present at Howth when the Asgard arrived to unload its shipment ofguns He was also present at the Battle of Ashbourne, at the surrender inNewbarn, Kilsallaghan and was imprisoned in Frongoch, Wales. The society will be running a profile on an Old IRA Volunteer from Fingal, every month for the next 16 weeks.
