A relieved Gerry told the County Leader, “Her recovery was exceptional and all her counts were up. We never doubted her courage, determina- tion and spirit, which brought her through this with flying colours,” he said. Both Emma and Gerry were fulsome in their praise for Crumlin Hospital and the wonderful care they provided for Molly. “There’s nowhere else in the world that we would have chosen to take care of Molly. Her consultant, Cormac Owens and his excellent team left nothing to chance and we cannot praise them enough,” said Gerry. “Molly is under- standably delighted to be back home with her family and she is in great spirits. We had to return to the hospital last Thursday for a visit, but every- thing worked out fine. Whilst Molly is at home, we still have to keep a careful eye on her, for fear of infection,” he said. Molly Back Home Molly McNally Local Sinn Fein councillor, Malachy Quinn has called for more support for dwindling fishing communities throughout the North County. He was about the issue speaking at the Party Ard Fheis in Derry recently. “All along the coast of the North County there are fishing communities struggling to make a living, the continuous attacks on Irish Fishing Quotas by Europe over the years have brought the Industry to its knees. The lack of real leadership on the issue by previous Governments & MEPs have only served to facilitate this,” Quinn said. “That said, I am concerned that the fishing industry is not attractive to young people throughout the locality due to decades of neglect by successive Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour governments, who have continu- ously ignored coastal communities,” he continued. “Sinn Féin has a strong team at home and in Europe, and with my colleagues Matt Carthy MEP for Midland’s North West, our fisheries spokesperson in the Dáil Martin Ferris TD and Minister Michelle O’Neill, we will continue to address these issues and stand up for Irish fishermen and coastal communi- ties in the North County and beyond,” Quinn concluded determinedly. SUPPORT DEMANDED FOR FISHING COMMUNITY Cllr. Quinn While the sight of lambs prancing around the fields and daffodils blowing in the wind are a sure sign of Spring, strawberries are the very essence of Summer. The first strawberries of the season were produced last week at Keelings Fruit Company in St Margaret’s, and this picture shows David Keeling proudly displaying the first strawberries of the year. Local Minister, Dr James Reilly broke down five minutes into a radio interview last week, while talking about his son, who has autism and the discretionary medical cards. Dr Reilly was speaking to RTE presenter, Ray D’Arcy about his tenure as Minister for Health and said that he regrets the discretionary medical cards, “That’s what upsets me most,” he said. In an emotional moment, he said, “I had no real choice because of the money situation we found ourselves in. I never thought that’s where I’d end up as Minister and as a parent of a child with a disability, taking cards off children with a disability.” “I’m very glad that situation was rectified before I left, in terms that it stopped and a review group was put in place.” He briefly broke down when speaking about his second son, Jamie who was diagnosed with autism. He voice quivered as he told D’Arcy, “I hope I can hold it together for this. I sat at the end of the bed and I still remember, I suppose, crying there with my wife, as we looked at our beautiful boy.” He continued, “We thought his future was gone, but thankfully we were wrong. The one message I would give to parents is, let nobody set a limit on your child’s horizon. We were told that he was mentally handicapped. We were told not to worry. “We went to England and we got him assessed there. We were told he did have autism. The mistake made by the psychologist unfortu- nately was that he used a verbal tool to assess a non verbal child. And when he started talking at five, the doors started opening,” he said. A proud Dr Reilly then spoke of the determina- tion of his son in coping with his condition. “He got to go to normal school when he was 11 and he’s progressed from there. He’s got an honours degree from Trinity in genetics and a masters in biotechnology from Queens and he’s studying for a PhD in autism and stem cell research,” he said. Dublin Airport’s airfieldis to receive a majorcapacity boost, withthe addition of ten newaircraft parking spaces and three new aircrafttaxiing lanes. The €20 million project, which islocated to the northern end of theairfield, is the largest single capitalinvestment at Dublin Airport sincethe opening of Terminal 2 in 2010.The extra aircraft parking spaces arerequired due to the significantgrowth in traffic at Dublin Airportover the past three years. Passengernumbers at the airport increased by 8 per cent to 21.7 million last yearand have risen by 16 per cent since2011.“This is a major construction project, which will create 10 extra aircraftparking stands and help the airportexpand further over the mediumterm,” said Dublin Airport ManagingDirector Vincent Harrison. “We are

constantly investing to maintain and improve theairfield area for our airline customers and also toimprove and upgrade the passenger experiencethroughout the airport,” Mr Harrison added. The new apron area being developed coversabout 67,500 square metres, which is equivalent

in size to 15 football pitches or a space bigenough to park 900 cars. The first phase of theproject, which is currently underway, involvestwo months of earth moving and drainage workafter which contractors will begin laying theconcrete that forms the top layer of the newparking area. The parking stand project also includes thereplacement and upgrading of drainage infra-structure, and the provision of undergroundsurface water attenuation and storage. Theseenvironmental measures will ensure that all

surface water run-off from the newparking stands will be collected andreleased in a controlled and carefullymanaged way back into the localwater system. “We take our environ-mental responsibilities very seri-ously and this project will be deliv-ered to the highest environmentalstandards,” Mr Harrison said. The construction work is beingcarried out by Clare CivilEngineering, which will have up to30 construction staff on site at anyone time. The project, which isknown as Apron 5G, is due to becompleted in April 2016, and also includes additional high mast lighting and a new electricalsubstation.

A Skerries schoolgirl has launched anonline petition, in an attempt toprevent a quarry near her home townfrom being turned into a landfill site.Tara McGonagle, who is a third yearstudent at Skerries CommunityCollege, told the County Leader abouthow she started this petition. “I waspart of Foróige, which is a large youthorganisation, and I completed a coursein Youth leadership and Communityskills. At the end of the course, I had toget a goal and mine was to preventMilverton Quarry on the outskirts ofSkerries from being turned into a land-fill site. The site is operated byRoadstone group. They want to fill thevoid there with natural substances, like rubble and soil, which will have adetrimental effect on wildlife in thearea, including peregrine falcons, which live there,” she said. This is when plucky Tara sprung intoaction. “I drew up an online petition onPetitions 24 and I wanted to see whereit would go. I wanted to draw attention

to Roadstone’s plans and people wereoutraged. Not only would wildlife beaffected, but it would cause trafficchaos on a narrow road, which is themain thoroughfare into Skerries fromDublin. We had 765 signatures, whichhave been submitted to the authori-ties. I didn’t lodge a formal objectionmyself, as it was too late when I foundout, but an objection was lodgedalready by a lady from Skerries. I stillhope to get more signatures, eventhough the objection has been lodged, and maybe a protest meeting can be planned,” concluded a determined Tara.

A new pathway has been built atCastleview estate in Swords, which will facilitate the safepassage of children from theestate to access the localschools nearby.Local councillor, Joe Newman(NP) was instrumental in havingthis vital pathway built, and hehas been canvassing theCouncil to have it built for sometime.Newman told the CountyLeader, “This issue came up atthe doorsteps in this area whenI was canvassing for the localelections early last year. I wasapproached by one of the resi-dents, Joe Billings, who hadconcerns about the lack of aproper footpath in Castleview,

particularly as many childrenuse this area to walk to school. He asked me to make represen-tation to the Council to have thisseen to. Prior to this, they hadto cross a busy and dangerousroad, which was completelyunsatisfactory,” he said. When I was elected, I followedthis up with Council official,Fergus O’Carroll, who inspectedthe area and agreed that a foot-path was needed. Happily, theyhave kept their work and thenew footpath means a saferpassage for children to theirschools nearby. Mr Billings hasexpressed his and residents’happiness with the newarrangement,” concludedNewman.

A ray of hope has emerged for localHome Help workers employed by theHSE, who are entitled to a gratuitypayment in lieu of their pension. Thispayment, which was recommended twiceby the Labour Court has beenpromised, but not delivered, which according to localsenator, Darragh O’Brien (FF),this Government is in breach of.This involves around 600workers here in the NorthCounty. He said, “They have ignored thissince 2012. We reckon that theaverage payment is around €8,000-9,000 per person and is a once-off lump

sum gratuity payment instead of theirpensions. I have been liaising with MaryHughes and Trisha Greene in this area,

and these are womenthat are at the frontline. The fact that the govern-ment and HSE have beenwithholding money thatthey’re entitled to is, inmy view a disgrace. Nowfor the first time, thereseems to be progressbeing made, and Minister for

Health Leo Varadkar has written back tome to say that he has set up an inter-

departmental group, as this issue strad-dles the Health and Social Protectiondepartments and he has promised toreport back to me later this month, whichis a much-welcomed chink of light.”Mary Hughes, a former Home Helpworker and campaigner told the CountyLeader, “We are very grateful to theMinister for taking up this campaign thatwe’re on at the moment. This gratuity isdue since 2009, but dates from

September 2000 to August2008 and the recommendationwas brought forward in 2009.There’s nothing after that andthe promise of the payment wasmade in 2012. Here we are in2015, and Trisha Greene and Ihave been battling with DarraghO’Brien and we’re delightedthat it all seems to be coming

together at last,” she said. Anothercampaigner, Trisha Greene said, “We

are all hard workers atthe frontline and wehave not received therecognition wedeserve. We’re notlooking for much, andat this stage, we haveworked tirelessly foryears and we believethat the end of a longroad is in sight andhopefully MinisterVaradkar will havegood news for us,” sheconcluded.

Local TD Alan Farrell (FG) held a publicmeeting in Swords last week focusing on‘The Future of Public Transport for Swords’with Tom Manning and Marchello Corsifrom the Railway Procurement Agency.“The North County needs a high-frequency,fast, and reliable public transport option. As the list of 25 possibleoptions has now beenshortlisted to six, and witha decision expected thisyear on which option willbecome the future ofpublic transport servingSwords and DublinAirport, I held a publicmeeting to discuss thepossibilities withconstituents and repre-sentatives from theRailway ProcurementAgency,” Farrellexplained. “I was delighted to haveTom Manning andMarchello Corsi present

from the Railway Procurement Agency todiscuss the options related to their area ofexpertise, namely Metro North and theLuas line extension from Cabra to theAirport and Swords.”“It currently takes around 26 minutes toget from Malahide into the City Centre,

with Swords being geographically closer, Isee no reason why people should not beable to get from the town into the City inless than 30 minutes,” he said. “I believe that a light-rail solution wouldbe the most efficient in terms of cateringfor the increase in demand which thepublic transport system around the Airportand Swords is going to face,” Farrelladded. “We can already see our roads

getting busier and ourjourney times increasing, particularly at rush hour, with more people travel-ling into, and out of, theCity. This will only beexacerbated as unem-ployment levels continueto drop.”“I am pleased that we areputting the plans in placenow to allow for thedevelopment of a trans-port system toadequately cater for theprojected populationgrowth for the area in thecoming years,” heconcluded.

become a real shoppingdestination for manypeople, not only fromthe town, but fromfurther afield.

It can boast a veryvibrant community, withno shortage of imagina-tive input, which hasbeen used to great

effect in improving thetown centre. Anexample of this hasbeen the recent, highlysuccessful Public RealmPlan, which includedthe wishes and aspira-tions of the residents. This has resulted inshop fronts with lovelycolours and floraldisplays, which has ledto some friendly compe-tition between retailers. The result of which isthat the town now has avery inviting look andfeel to it that makes youwant to shop here. Thisscheme was a greatsuccess mainly becauseit had the full support ofall the local agencies,as well as theBalbriggan Chamber ofCommerce, and theCounty Council. This co-operation has culmi-nated in a town that is

In pastyears, there had been aflight of shoppers fromthe town in search ofother areas, but now, with it’s wide selectionof top class shopsoffering excellent value, locals now stay at hometo avail of wonderfulbargains. The other major benefitto Balbriggan, is thepresence of two majorshopping centres on theoutskirts of the town -one on Naul Road andthe other at Castlemills. These new shoppingcentres have breathednew life into thecommunities wherethey are located. Theyhave also been instru-mental in attracting visi-tors from far and wide, where access from themotorway has changedthe whole dynamics ofshopping in the area. Green Party representative for the North County, JoeO’Brien has welcomed the County Council plans toconsult with the public on the planned use of the€100,000 allocated for refurbishment of SkerriesLibrary. Last year, O’Brien campaigned for the County Councilto pilot a participatory budgeting process on the fundsallocated for the library. This would have involved thecommunity leading the decision making process on theuse of the funds. He held a public meeting last year inSkerries at which an expert in participatory budgetingfrom England spoke. While the Council have notdecided to run a participatory budgeting pilot on thelibrary funds, O’Brien welcomed the move as progress. “I am glad to learn that the Council will formally look for

the views of library users as to how the €100,000should be used in the library. The people of Skerrieshave lots of good ideas about how the library couldbecome an even better community space and theseideas should be listened to. We have a beautifulCarnegie library that could really be pulling morepeople into the town centre. I think priority for the useof the funds should be ways to get more people usingwhat really is a community space,” he said.“ I would urge the Council to give serious considerationto expanding the space in the library, there is a sizeablepiece of derelict ground at the back of the library thatshould be brought into play for the community.Skerries library is extraordinarily small for the size ofthe town. I have no doubt that all the schools in

Skerries would bevery interested inusing the librarymore, if spaceallowed and I wouldencourage theschool principalsand indeed the chil-dren to write to theCounty Council withtheir ideas,” O’Brienadded. “I have asked forfurther clarification

from the Council as to when the consultation will startbut I would suggest that people start getting in touchwith the Council now and get your proposals and ideasin early,” he concluded.

As spring is here atlast, there’s no bettertime to revive yourhome for a newseason. A new rughere, a fresh coat ofpain there with somenew accessories foryour rooms, and you’llfeel like you’ve movedinto a brand newhouse! Here are a fewtips to ensure spring

takes centre stage inyour home over thenext few weeks. You may be in the moodfor some major recon-struction, or possiblyjust want to make thehouse more summerfriendly. Whateveryou’re thinking of,County Leader havegathered some tips tohopefully inspire you to

get started. It ispossible to change thelook of your home, onthe outside and inside,on just a small budget.Businesses in the NorthCounty have some greatspring offers to give youthe best bargain, andimprove your summerhome on a smallbudget.

Lighten Up

With the brighterevenings and longerdays, there’s no longer aneed for drab colours andheavy materials. Here is aseason where yoursurroundings should belight and breezy to reflectspringtime. A popular tipis to replace those heavywinter curtains for lighter, thinner ones. Embracethe sun, it’s not everydaywe have it. In fact, wemost probably spend athird of the year in thedark and cold, a littlemorning sunshine andlate nights can’t harm us.Summer’s all about thelight colours, andallowing more light intothe house will bringsummer indoors too. Notonly this, but it will alsomake your rooms appearlarger and morespacious. Appearing tohave more spaciousreflects the outdoor airand breeze, preparingyou for the brightermonths ahead.

Revive YourLiving Room

The living room shouldbe the most vibrant, lively room in the house, filled with familymembers, so decorateyour living room toreflect this. There’s nolonger a need for thesethick, wooly blankets oncouches, if you tend touse one for comfort, replace the blanket witha nice, pastel colouredthrow. Decorate theroom with colourfulornaments adding asummery pop of colour.

Spring Candles

Candles are key tomaking houses feel likea home. Buy or replacesome candles withsome subtly sweetones, similar to freshfruits. There’s nothingmore relaxing andhomely, than a candlelitroom and subtlelighting. Colourful

candles are a great wayto add colour, andcomfort also. However,be sure to balance outthe colour carefully withthe theme of yourhouse. If it is promi-nently traditional, pastelcoloured candles andornaments will suitbetter. If however, yourliving room has a mini-malist look, sticking tomainly shaded colours, you may get away withbright, bold colourswhich add character anddimension to yourhouse this spring.

The old guard of the EU establish-ment still struggles to cope withthe style and tactics of the newGreek Government. A group notused to being down faced, theyfind the new circumstance wherethe Greeks will not roll over quitedisturbing. This is particularly sofor the engine of Europe: Germany,Alexis Tsipras the Greek PrimeMinister speaking in hisParliament called again onGermany to pay war reparations tohis country. Ouch, not the sort ofthing Ms. Merkel is likely to wantto hear or indeed be reminded of.Her spokesman, Steffen Seibert, is

reported as saying, “The questionof reparations and compen-sation is legally and politi-cally closed. GreekFinance MinisterVaroufakis speaking ina television interviewsaid that the GermanForeign Minister had toldhim that he (Varoufakis) hadlost the trust of the Germangovernment to which heresponded that he never had it.Also the Greek Foreign Ministryhas lodged a complaint over

German comments regarding thenaivety of the Greek Government.Greece seems to have won a skir-mish in respect of whom theynegotiate with; the Troika appearsto now operate under the handleof the ‘Brussels Group’. From littleacorns great oaks grow. Another

seeming to shift position isDavid Cameron who now

says “I think this is themoment Britain stopssleepwalking towardsthe exit.” He hasacknowledged that

treaty changes may notbe actually required to

make the adjustments which hehas sought. Commenting on legaladvice in regard to treaty changes,he remarked that it was oftensurprisingly flexible as it seems heis when reality comes close.

Will Positions Shift ToHold EU Together?
