The appointment of Donald Tusk as Presidentof the European Commission, sees EwaKopacz become the second female PolishPrime Minister. She has promoted Schelyna, the speaker of Parliament to Foreign Minister; this despite his limited experience in thearea. A dissatisfied Schelyna, who wasTusk’s main opponent within theCivic Platform, is calling for aninternal party leadership elec-tion. The real test of Kopacz’scapacity to successfully leadthem, is in November whenlocal elections are to be held. The Catalan Parliament pressesahead with their intended “consul-tat ion” on independence for theregion. This wil l force the SpanishGovernment into court to endeavour toprevent the process taking place. Should the“consultation” proceed, it will be interestingto see i f i t is any more successful thanScotland’s attempt to break away from theUK. The newly elected Minister-President of theFlemish Parliament has expressed the view

that Europe is too big, and is seeking greatersubsidiarity, stating that the EU’s urge toregulate everything must be controlled. Ukrainian separatist are proposing electionslater this year to provide legitimacy to theircause. President Poroshenko pulled back theUkrainian forces, creating a 30km buffer zoneas agreed with the separatists, which seemedto signal an acceptance of the ceding of theeastern segment of the country. He also setout a programme of reform last week toprepare the country to make an application forEU membership in 2020. While President Putinwrote to the EU warning that if the currentUkraine-EU association agreement is actioned, that Russia’s immediate retaliatory measures

will commence. Parliament commencesthe new Commissioner hearings, as

Nessa Childers has Big Phil clearlyin her sights, but most pundits areof the view that, while he mayhave an uncomfortable couple ofhours at the hands of MEPs,there is little doubt but that he

will survive. The main focus will beon Timmermans, who is Juncker’s

first Vice President. As some MEPsare critical of the proposed reorganisa-

tion of the Commission, particularly in areas ofhealthcare and the environment with theIndustry Commissioner taking responsibilityfor pharmaceutical policy, while the environ-ment seems to have suffered a down grade. This hearing, which is open to all MEPs, willprovide the platform to allow members theopportunity to show their displeasure.

Relief At Decision ToRetain Local Court Services

Earlier this year, therewas a very real possibilitythat court cases wouldhave been heard in thecity centre, or in

B l a n c h a r d s t o w n ,depending on the case.This would have causeduntold hardship forpeople, trying to access

far flung places, in a bidto have justice served. Many locals believe thatshutting both of thesecourthouses would havehad a negative impact onthe justice system as awhole and would haveadversely affected thelocal communities ofSwords and Balbriggan. This news will be particu-larly welcomed by victimsof domestic violence, where legislation allows aperson, who is beingbeaten, abused or threat-ened by a partner, orsomeone he/she hasresided with for a periodof six months, to seek aprotection or barringorder.Had the courts inBalbriggan and Swordsbeen closed down, andthis service removed fromthe local area, victims ofabuse would have beenplaced in great danger. The retention of this vitalservice means that, if aperson is being beatenthe previous night, theymay only have a windowof an hour or two to getan order. Now they cancontinue to go down tothe District Court office inSwords, and appearbefore a judge an hourlater here in Swords. Thisis effective and quick andprotects people in thatposition. Many people trying toaccess city centre courts,or Blanchardstown, would have to take twobuses, at significantexpense, and with little orno knowledge of where togo. Many believe that thiswould have led to peoplenot turning up, and in thecase of victims of abuse, they would have beenless inclined to travel, which would havepresented problems. The fact that Swords andBalbriggan have beenidentified as areas ofexponential growthmeans that more servicesare needed, not less. Thebenefits of the retentionof the courts is expectedto have a beneficial

impact on the localeconomy in both towns, with increased footfall awelcome addition. The news has beenwarmly welcomed by thelegal profession in theNorth County, where localsolicitors have given thedevelopments thethumbs up. Liam Fitzgerald from LiamR. Fitzgerald Solicitors,Main Street, Lusk told theCounty Leader, “Intheory, the law should beapplied consistentlyacross the state. Thus itshould not make a differ-ence if a person goesbefore a court inBalbriggan orB l a n c h a r d s t o w n .However, what is impor-tant is access to justice. There is a saying “Justiceand the Law are milesapart”. Thus addingmore miles to the Lawonly make Justice evenfurther away,” he said.Laura Shannon, fromShannon Solicitors inSwords is delighted withthe Courts Service deci-sion to retain the courtsin Swords andBalbriggan. She said, “The decisionwould be a great relief toall users of the Courts inthe Dublin area, in partic-ular Family Law users willnot now have to go to thecrowded courts in DolphinHouse in Dublin CityCentre, where people allover Dublin would havebeen using the crampedfacilities, with seriousdelays and adjourn-ments.”She also thanked theDublin Solicitors BarAssociation, the NorthCounty Leader and thelocal councillors and TDsin the North County, forpassing motionscondemning the move, and lobbying the CourtService on behalf of thepeople of Fingal.Maureen Black of MPBlack & Co Solicitors inMalahide said, “We’redelighted with the deci-sion to reverse theclosures. It made noeconomic sense. All itwould have done was toincrease pressure on theGardai. There is not agood transport service toBlanchardstown, whichmeans it would have beendifficult to get witnessesto court. We’re delightedthat a system that hasserved us so well, hasbeen retained. If it’s notbroken, don’t fix it. Therewas a lot of lobbying doneby the legal profession, and we’re happy that ourvoice was heard,” shesaid. Similarly, Fiona Kelly F MKelly & CompanySolicitors, Church Street,Skerries was very happywith the outcome. “We

welcome the decision toensure that our localcourts remain open. Forthe general public, access to justice is essen-tial and the demographicsof North County Dublinare such that theproposed closure wouldhave significantlyimpinged upon an indi-vidual’s access to justice,be they victims of crime, claimants in civil and orfamily proceedings, orotherwise,” she said.Justine O’Connor of ConO’Connor & Co,Balbriggan said, “We aredelighted that theplanned proposal for theclosure of the local Courtshas now been aban-

doned. Had it goneahead, it would have beena huge setback forBalbriggan and Swords.Congratulations to allthose, who worked sovigourously to ensure thatBalbriggan and Swordsretained operative court-houses,” she said.Devaney & PartnersSolicitors in Malahidewere another company tofully back the decision tokeep the courthousesopen in Swords andBalbriggan. They said,“We are delighted withthe news last week, thatthe courts were beingretained in the NorthCounty. It makescomplete sense.”

The great news that the District Court service isbeing retained in the North County, with Swordsand Balbriggan courthouses to remain open, has been given a broad welcome locally. It alsomeans that the District Court Office in Swordswill also be retained.

Dublin Airport WinsMajor Global Award Dublin Airport has won a major global marketingaward at the World Routes 2014 conference inChicago. Dublin Airport won the World RoutesAward for airports that handle between 20million and 50 million passengers per year. Theawards, which are for excellence in marketing byairports, are voted exclusively by airlines world-wide and are divided into just four categoriesbased on airport size. Dublin Airport defeatedthe other shortlisted airports nominated in the20-50 million passengers per year category -Copenhagen, Dusseldorf, Munich and SeattleTacoma – to win the award. “This is a fantasticachievement,” said Dublin Airport ManagingDirector, Vincent Harrison. “We’re delighted tohave been named the best airport in the worldfor aviation marketing for airports handling 20-50 million passengers per year.” Harrisonadded that winning the award was “recognitionof Dublin Airport’s marketing team’s profession-alism and ingenuity to help deliver seven percent passenger growth this year, with growthfrom all airline types and all market sectors.”Almost 14.6 million passengers used DublinAirport in the first months of this year, which is aseven per cent increase on the same period in2013. After a long day at work, its important thatentering your homemakes you feel calm andrelaxed. You want to feelsolace and comfort uponreturning home. So manyhomeowners allow theentrance to their homesto become overgrownand unkempt. You maynot see it from insideyour home, but it’s thevery first thing you seeupon arriving back, soalways make your frontexterior and garden apleasant sight rather thanan eyesore. A beautiful new frontdoor will improve thelook of your home’s exte-rior immediately. Gettingrid of and replacing yourtatty, old front door willmake coming home adream rather than anightmare. Something assimple as painting yourcurrent one could have

this affect, so chose astunning midnight blueor emerald green andattach brushed-nickeladdress numbers on to it.You can paint your dooryourself, so start byremoving it and laying itflat on to an area coveredwith a protective sheet.Next, lightly sand theentire door with fine gritsandpaper and applyyour chosen paint colourusing rollers, as they willminimise runs and strokemarks. Use a brush toreach all crevices andyou’re done!Flowers are also a greatway of improving the wayyou feel about cominghome. Hanging basketsare very easy to maintainand are a perfect way toframe your freshlypainted, new front door. It’s a good idea to gatherrecommendations fromone of North County’slocal stores on whichplants will thrive in yourarea. Also, try plantingflowers around yourgarden path. This willmake walking along it anabsolute treat and helpyou arrive to your frontdoor with a spring in yourstep.

Making the Most OfThe Space You Have

If your reasons formoving home arebecause you feel youdon’t have enough space, there are many methodsand tricks you can add to

your current residence.Try fixing a large mirrorup in a smaller room. Thiswill make the spaceappear larger and bouncearound any light comingin. Keep all large furni-ture light and brightmaking the space aroundit seem spacious. You canalways add a splash ofcolour with cushions andthrows if you choose to. A very busy room willseem smaller soensuring the tones andcolour schemes areneutral can help makethe space feel tidy andbigger. Pale walls willalso make the wallsseem further away.Remember, you canalways add texturethrough accessories butsteer clear of heavycurtains as they willcreate a cramped envi-ronment.

Bathrooms

While the bathroom canbe one of the mostexpensive rooms toimprove, there areseveral quick changesyou can make that willmake an amazing differ-ence. Something assimple as removingunnecessary items fromyour bathroom countercan make the roomappear less over-crowded, so get rid ofthe old deodorant canthat’s been sittingaround for months.Instead, replace it with adecorative vase or apretty soap dispenser. You can pick up any ofthese items at any of ofthe local home storesaround the NorthCounty.Cracked tiles can alsomake the whole roomseem scruffy, so replaceany that you have inyour bathroom. This canbe done extremelycheaply and could evenbe attempted yourself. However, patience isrequired so take yourtime and don’t rush thejob.

The local local economy receiveda major shot in the arm, with thenews that a home in Skerries hasachieved an extraordinary 50 percent over the guide price quotedat auction. This will be seen bymany as a really good news storyfor the local economy, and forSkerries in particular. The exceptional price achieved forThe Old Rectory, 1 HolmpatrickTerrace in the town, was €1.5million, which is 50 per cent overthe guide price quoted by auction-

eers, Lisney. The house is a fourbedroomed Victorian house, which extends to 290 squaremetres over three levels andstands on a 0.37 acre site, whichhas planning permission for asecond detached house. This development is set to have avery positive impact on the localeconomy, with the resultant boostin confidence, and is yet anotherindication that the North County isone of the most desirable placesto live in the entire country.

15% ReductionContinued from page 1did so as they feltsome funds should beput aside to help alle-viate the currenthousing crisis aroundthe North County, butit was soon discov-ered that thiswouldn’t make asignificant difference.“We basically foundthat if we voted in a 10per cent reduction, instead of the full 15,it would only leave uswith an excess of one-and-a-half mil l ion, which wasn’t going tomake much differenceand solve the housingproblems, and so themajority vote for thefull reduction waswon,” he said. For local councillor,Justin Sinnott (NP),this was also one ofthe reasons hewanted the full 15 percent LPT cut. “Whilethe housing was avaluable argument, Icould see that weweren’t going to makea significant impacton that, even i f wevoted for less that the15 per cent cut,” hesaid. He alsoexplained that theChief Executive of the

County Council, PaulReid’s alternative plan- to have the 15 percent LPT cuts spreadover a five year period(3 per cent per yearover 5 years) had aparticular problem forhim. “Given that wewould have had extrafunds to put into extraprojects had we votedfor a 3 per cent cutover the 5 year period, the problem I had withthat is, who decideswhich projects getpreference forfunding? How am Isuppose to tell peoplebased in say theSouth end of theregion, that we didn’tcut your LPT becausethe funds are goinginto for example, aproject in the North

end of the region? Tome, it doesn’t seemfair that some projectsin certain areas of thelocality would getpreference overothers,” Sinnottexplained. Nevertheless, theChief Executive will nodoubt be disap-pointed with 15 percent reduction, as hewas keen to have hisalternative LPT planpassed. At themeeting, Reidoutlined that the LPTcuts spread over fiveyears would “leavethe Council with asignificant amount offunds they had neverhad before to invest inkey communityprojects, such asSwords Castle.”

Horticultural Show For Balbriggan GroupThe Balbriggan Horticultural Society’s grand finale of theyear is their Annual Horticultural Show, which took place inBalbriggan Community College recently. The show never

fails to impress with a large array of vegetables, flowers, photos, jams and displays on show. The Dalia section was awelcome sight on entry to the show and it certainly gave visi-tors a very high standard to aspire to in their own gardens.

‘The 1916 Diaries Of AnIrish Rebel And ABritish Soldier’presents the readerwith two uniqueaccounts from twodifferent individualswho were involved inseparate sides of theEaster Risingrebellion inApril 1916.Author MickO ’ F a r r e l l ’ snovel centreson two unpub-lished diaries, written by twomen fighting onthe streets ofDublin in 1916.On one side isIrish Volunteer,Seosamh deBrún and on theopposite side ofthe battle, isBritish soldier,C o m p a n ySergeant Major,Samuel Lomas. What differentiatesthis novel from otherspublished on the sametopic, is that this isone of the firstpublished works tocontain personalaccounts of their ownindividual experiences- both mundane andextraordinary - during1916. It’s important to notethat the book is not adetailed, full accountof the Easter Rising in

1916, but instead, atightly focused look atvarious events as theyhappened to two indi-viduals deeplyinvolved in the rebel-lion, fighting on oppo-site sides of the fence.

This is what makes thenovel a joy to read. What we get are twovery different, personal accountsproviding us with afresh look at one of themost infamous battlesin Irish history, ratherthan simply, a histor-ical timeline of events. We start by getting thepersonal diary of IrishVolunteer, Seosamhde Brún. This is aninteresting account to

start off with, as weare given the chance tosee what the life of an‘ordinary’ volunteerwas like during Easterweek. Born on July 3rd,1883, de Brún lived onDublin’s Northside. He

carried his ‘midget’diary (it was nomore than pocketsize), with himfrom late 1915 toSaturday, 29thApril 1916 and notonly do we get toglimpse into themindset of avolunteer who“did not expectto be involved inRevolution....sosuddenly,” wealso are givendetails of hisguard duties. In one particu-larly memorableentry, he writesof how he wasasked to cycle

to help de Valera, during which a sniperkilled one of the othercyclists. We also getthe other, moremundane secondarydetails of his lifecircumstances. All ofthese details results ina truly memorableaccount of the life ofan Irish Volunteerduring a time of battle.Moving onto thesecond account ofBritish soldier Samuel

Lomas. This tooprovides fascinatinginsight into the life of asoldier during a time ofwar. Born in Tideswellin England inNovember 1879,Lomas was 36 when hearrived in Dublin, onTuesday April 25th1916. It was over thenext 14 days that hewrote his personaltake on the eventsthat followed, in whichhe built barricadesacross importantstreets, and ledstorming parties tobreak into buildings. Then there are thedarker accounts, inwhich he was involvedin the executions ofkey figures in therising; Pádraig Pearse,Thomas MacDonaghand Tom Clarke. In oneentry, he describeshow Pearse “whistledas he came out of hiscell.” Overall, thisnovel is a must read. For those that are fansof this era of Ir ishhistory, this will giveyou fresh details onthe battle thatoccurred during Easterweek, and for thosethat don’t know muchabout it, the book willprovide you with aunique insight intotwo men that wereright in the centre ofthe fighting.
