UBC University: A spiritual University called the
University of Bhagawat Culture (UBC) opened up in
ISKON complex Imphal in December 2014.
National Sports University: It is temporarily
functioning at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex,
Imphal. P.M. Narendra Modi laid the foundation at
Imphal west on 16th March 2018.6

Geographical Location of Manipur
A small state situated in the extreme corner of North East India
having 352 kms international border with Myanmar on the south-
east and 502 kms long border with the adjacent states of Assam
on the west, Mizoram on the south and Nagaland on the north.
The state is an isolated hill-girt stretching between 92058’E to
94045’E longitudes and 23050’N to 25042’N latitudes with a total
geographical area of 22,327 Sq.kms. of the total area, about nine
tenth of area or 20,089 Sq.kms hills which surrounds the 2,238
Sq.kms of the valley.
It is a charming place encircled by nine hill ranges on all sides with
a small and beautiful oval shaped valley like a bowl at the centre.
This state is known as Manipur“Jewel of India” - Jawahar Lal Nehru

State’s Physiography and Topography
Physiographically the state may be divided into two distinct
forms- an outlying area of rugged hills and narrow valleys, and
the inner area of flat plain, with all associated land forms.
The Loktak lake the largest fresh water lake in North east India is
an important feature of the valley with a total area of about 600
Sq.kms.
Topographically the state is divided into three major regions such
as i) hills b) Imphal valley and c) Barak Basin. The Imphal valley
which is around 48.3 km in length and 32.2 km in breadth lies in
the centre of the state.
The major river of Manipur is Barak River and the Imphal River.
Imphal River is the longest river and it also collects excess water
from the Loktak Lake and flows to join the streams of Ningthee
and Chindwin river of Myanmar.

Demographics status of Manipur
The population of Manipur as per 2011 Census was 28.6 lakhs
consisting of 14.4 lakhs males and 14.2 lakhs females registering
a population density of 128 per sq.km. The decadal growth rate in
2011 over 2001 was found to be 24.50 per cent.
The density of population per Sq.km. in the hill is 61 as against
730 in the valley. Out of the total population, 3.41 per cent are
scheduled castes communities and 40.88 per cent are of
scheduled tribes.
The sex ratio for the state as a whole has improved from 974
females per 1000 males in 2001 to 985 per 1000 males in 2011.
In term of literacy, Manipur ranks 5th among the North Eastern
states of India as per 2011 census.
The present literacy rate as per 2011 census is 79.85 per cent.

According to 2011 census, the ST population was 11.67 lakhs
and SC population was .97lakh populations in Manipur.
There are 33 Government recognized Scheduled Tribes in

About 95 per cent of the scheduled tribe populations are found in
the hill districts of Manipur while remaining 5 per cent are found in
the valley districts.
The Scheduled Caste recognized by the Govt of Manipur are
inhabited at Awang Sekmai, Andro, Leimaram Khunou, Koutruk,
Kwatha, Khurkhul, Phayeng and Tairenpokpi. Among them 98 per
cent are concentrated at valley districts and remaining 2 per cent
are settled in the hill districts.

Attempts are also made to provide a clear picture of the
religious pursuits of the people of Manipur.
The Hindus who constitute about 41.39 per cent
The Muslims who constitute about 8.39 per cent
are mostly settled in the valley.
Most of tribes are now Christians with a percentage of
41.29 are settled in the hills.
Other religious like Jain, Buddhist are also found in
Manipur.

The Economy in the state of Manipur depends mainly on the agricultural
sector for it is the biggest livelihood source for the rural people. The
various kinds of crops grown in Manipur are rice, maize, pulses, and
wheat. The cultivation in the hilly area of the state is done using the
Jhumming and terraced cultivation methods. Whereas, in the valley both
traditional methods and scientific methods are commonly used. Various
kinds of fruits and vegetables such as pine- apple, orange, mangoes,
lemons, carrot, ladies finger, cabbage, and pea are also grown in
Manipur. The agricultural sector contributes a great deal of revenue to
the Economy in Manipur.

HISTORY, HERITAGE AND
CULTURE OF MANIPUR

Manipur became a princely state under the British rule in 1891,
the last of the independence states to be incorporated into British
India. During the Second World War, Manipur was the scene of
battles between Japanese and Allied forces. The Japanese were
beaten back before the Allies could enter Imphal. This proved to
be one of the turning points of the War.
After the was, the Manipur Consititution Act, 1947, established a
democratic form of government with the Maharaj as the Executive
Head and an elected legislature. In 1949, Maharaj Budhachandra
was summoned to Shillong, capital of the Indian province of
Meghalaya where he signed a Treaty of Accession merging the
kingdom into India. thereafter the legislative assembly was
dissolved and Manipur became part of Republic of India in
October 1949. it was made a union territory in 1956 and full
fledged state in 1972.
Md. Alim Uddin became the first Chief Minister of Manipur in
1972.

• Kangla
The Palace of Kangla is an old
palace at Imphal in the Manipur
state of India. Only the ruins
remain now. Kangla means "dry
land" in old Meetei. It was the
traditional seat of the
past Meetei rulers of Manipur.
The centre of Manipur’s power till
1891, the historical embodiment of
Manipur rulers and the people of
Manipur. Kangla has a significant
place in the heart and mind of the
people of Manipur.

The indomitable spirit of the patriotic
Meitei and Tribal martyrs, who sacrificed
their lives while fighting the British in
1891, is commemorated by this tall Minar
at Bir Tikendrajit Park in the heart of

Commemorating the memories of the
British and Indian soldiers who died
during World War-II, these War
cemeteries are managed by the
Commonwealth War Graves
Commission.

This was constructed by the
Japanese Government on the
site of the Battle of Red Hill (Pt.
2926) or Maibam Lokpaching, on
the Tiddim Road. The Battle took
place from May 20-29, 1944.

the greatest battle of the Anglo-
Manipur War. Great freedom
fighters-Major Paona Brajabasi,
Chinglen Sana, Khumbong Major,
Loitongba Jamadar, Keisa

many more rank and files of
Manipuri warriors sacrificed their
lives at this battlefield.

I.N. A. MEMORIAL COMPLEX MOIRANG
It was at Moirang that the flag of the Indian National
Army was first unfurled on April 14, 1944. The INA
Museum which has a collection of letters, photographs,
badges of ranks and other war memorabilia reminds the
visitors of the noble sacrifices made by the INA soldiers
under the charismatic leadership of Netaji Subhas
Chandra Bose.

A historic Vaishnavite centre, adjoining
Manipur’s former Maharajas’ Royal Palace,
the Govindajee temple is one of the most
attractive sights for the tourists.

Bishnupur town prides itself in the 15th
century Vishnu Temple builf of small bricks,
supposedly of Chinese influence.
• The Archdiocese of Imphal
The Archdiocese of Imphal covers the
entire State of Manipur which is bounded
by Nagaland in the North, Mizoram in
the South, Upper Myanmar in the East

ISKON Temple Manipur is a place where Lord Krishna
is held in very high esteem. He’s the
one Hindu deity who has a place in
almost all Manipuris’ hearts. So,
among the Hindu temples in Manipur,
the ISKCON (International Society for
Krishna Consciousness) ‘Mandir’, is
one of the most highly reputed
temples.
The temple is considered as the most
beautiful among the temples in the
state. The highly decorated and
sophisticated techniques used in
building the temple give a unique
charm to the viewers and visitors. The
shrine is very close to the Imphal river
of Manipur.

CUISINE OF MANIPUR
The staple food is rice and fish with seasonal vegetables. There
are more than 200 varieties of Manipuri dishes. Iromba, whose
main ingridients are the fermanted fish (Ngari) and Chillies is a
favourite. Manipuri cuisine also consists of unusual vegetables
like Thangjing (Gorgon), Soibum (Khorisa) Hawaijaar (Fermented
Soyabean), Yongchaak (Sataw) etc.

Upcoming Tallest railway bridge in the world
Northeast Frontier Railway stated that it is constructing the world’s
tallest girder railway bridge of the world in Manipur. This is from
the point of view of pillar height. Under construction across the
valley of river Ijai near Noney with a pier height of 141 meters
(462.598 feet), it will “surpass the existing record of 139 meters of
the Mala-Rijeka Viaduct in Montenegro in Europe” said NFR
Senior Public Relations Officer, in a statement.

Manipur is land of festivals. A year in Manipur represents a cycle
of festivals. Hardly a month passes by without a festival which, to
the Manipuris, is a symbol of their cultural, social and religious
aspirations.
Ningol ChakkoubaNingol Chakouba is one of the festivals in
the state which falls on the second lunar
day of the Manipuri calendar’s Hiyangei
month. Ningol means ‘married woman’
and Chakouba means ‘invitation for
feast’; so the festival is the one where the
married women are invited to their
parents’ home for a feast. It strengthens
the bond of affections among the brothers
and sisters, daughters and parents of a
family.

SANGAI FESTIVALEvery year the State of
Manipur celebrates the “Manipur
Sangai Festival” from 21st to
30th November. The 'Festival' is
named after the State animal, Sangai,
the brow-antlered deer found only
in Manipur.
It started in the year 2010 and has

platform for Manipur to showcase its
rich tradition and culture to the world.
Every edition of the festival showcases
the tourism potential of the state in the

SHIRUI LILY FESTIVAL
Shirui Lily Festival is an annual
cultural state festival of Manipur
organised by Manipur Tourism
Department every year. Initially,
the festival was celebrated by
the locals of Shirui village in
Ukhrul to pay tribute to the state
flower Shirui Lily that blooms
from the last week of May
through the second week of
June. In 2017, Shirui Lily
Festival was declared as a state
festival by the Government of
Manipur. 3rd state level Shirui
Lily Festival, starting October
16, 2019.

HEIKRU HITONGBA (Boat race)
Celbrated for five
days commencing
from the full moon
day of Phalguna
(Feb/March). Yaoshang is premier
festival of Manipur. The Thabal
Chongba- a kind of Manipur folk dance
and Yoashang sports, are two important
events associated with this festival of
colour.

One of the biggest Hindu festival
of Manipur. This festival is
celebrated for ten days in the
month of July. Lord Jagannth
leaves his temple in Charriot
known as Kang in Manipur pulled
by devotees who vie with one
another for this honour.
During the festival special
festive dishes are prepared
which are first offered to
various deities. Celebrated
during the month of April, a
part of the ritual entails
villagers climbing the nearest
hill tops in the belief that it will
enable them to rise to greater
heights in the worldly life

KUT FESTIVAL OF KUKI CHIN MIZO
GAAN NGAI FESTIVALS OF NAGAS
It is an autumn festival of the different
tribes of Kuki-Chin-Mizo groups of
Manipur. The festival has been
variously described at different places
amongst different tribes as Chavang
Kut or Khodou. It is a festival
celebrating the harvest and is
observed on the 1st November every
year.
Celebrating for five days in the
month of December/ January. Gaan
Ngai is an important festival of the
Kabui Nagas. The festival opens
with the omen taking ceremony on
the first day and the rest of the days
are associated with common feast,
dances of old men, women, boys
and girls presentation of farewell
gifts.

Lui Ngai Ni is the seed-sowing festival
celebrated by the Naga clans of
Manipur India. The celebration is
commended every year on 14–15
February toward the beginning of the
spring season.
Amid the celebration, the Naga clans
in Manipur in particular Anal, Mao,
Maram, Poumai, Tangkhul, Zeme,
Liangmai, Rongmei, Puimei, Moyon,
Monsang, Maring, Tarao, Lamkanq,
Chothe, Kharam, Chiru, Koireng, and
Thangal meet up at the assigned area
to join and exhibit their rich social
legacy.
Lui-Ngai-Ni is commended in all the
Naga occupied regions in Manipur.

Imphal is the second largest International airport in the
region. Imphal is connected to New Delhi, Kolkata,
Guwahati, Bangalore, Agartala, Aizwal, Dimapur by Air. Air
India, Indigo, Air Asia are the prominent airways operating
in this airport.
Railways
Dimapur in Nagaland 219 km to the north and Jiribam in
Manipur 222 km in the south west of Manipur are the two
