FROM skiing the pristine white slopes of our

resorts, to getting cosy beside an open fire in the North East’s welcoming pubs or restaurants, the region shows off its diverse attractions during winter.

The weather may be cold, but there is still a wide array of festivals and events throughout the season.

During the Queen’s Birthday weekend in particular, visitors and locals alike are spoiled for choice.

Wine lovers flock to Rutherglen for their popular Winery Walkabout, or head across to the King Valley for their Weekend Fit For A King, or the Glenrowan area for Trails, Tastings and Tales.

The weekend also sees local mountains and alpine villages, including Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Dinner Plain and Mt Buller, welcome in the official start to the snow season.

The snow attracts many to the region to enjoy a range of activities, including skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, snowshoe walks, and après ski socialising.

Textile fans will once again flock to Wangaratta for the Stitched Up Textile Festival, showcasing all manner of textile creations and underlining Wangaratta’s reputation for textiles.

at HothamON the back of a bumper 2012 season,

which saw over 4m of snow fall, Hotham Alpine Resort is gearing up for another spectacular winter – one that promises to be faster, easier and more enjoyable than ever before.

Winter 2013 will see people getting on the snow in no time, with the introduction of Hotham’s new Snow Pass – a convenient fully automated RFID multimedia card for all ticketing, lesson and hire purchases.

Organise everything you need before you arrive at the resort via the Hotham online eStore – now accessible on your PC, tablet or phone - then collect your Snow Pass loaded with your lift passes, equipment hire and lessons booked and ready to go.

You can log on to update and reload at anytime that suits.

Go to hotham.com.au/estore today.Over the summer, the team at Hotham have

been busy installing brand new RFID scanning gates on four key resort lifts, introducing a smooth and effi cient operation used at ski resorts around the world.

Investment in Hotham’s extensive

snowmaking system continues along with the addition of a new grooming machine.

Guests will enjoy new retail experiences on mountain with a new souvenir shop, The Snowdome, and a newly located and renovated Boardbox.

Additional to this, Hotham and Falls Creek resorts have bought Rays Ski Shop in Myrtleford.

New for Rays is the option for guests to now purchase lift tickets and lessons before they arrive at the mountain.

A new online booking facility offers guests a quick and easy way to view and book a range of properties available online at hothamholidays.com.au.

The Hotham Holiday Planner can now be read anywhere and anytime that suits you, and the online eBrochure is touch and swipe friendly for iPad.

David Morris is a fi fth generation winemaker at Morris Wines.

ESTABLISHED in 1859, Morris Wines is the continuing

story of fi ve generations of family winemakers.

And the winery continues to kick goals in today’s competitive global wine industry.

During May, the winery was awarded gold medals at the prestigious International Wine Challenge, which is accepted as the fi nest wine competition in the world.

Morris Wines’ The Classic Liqueur Tokay, Old Premium Liqueur Tokay, Classic Liqueur Muscat and Old Premium Liqueur Muscat were all awarded gold medals at the event.

And in February this year, the Morris Old Premium Liqueur Rare Muscat won the RL Buller and Son Perpetual Trophy at the Sydney International Wine Competition.

David Morris, the fi fth generation winemaker at Morris

Wines, said the winery’s rich traditions had helped cement their place in the wine industry.

“This trophy would not be possible if it were not for the diligence and commitment to quality that has been instilled in every generation of the Morris family since George Francis Morris fi rst established his winery in Rutherglen in 1859,” he said of the February win.

Mr Morris took over the winemaking reins from his father in 1993.

“The role of each generation is to nurture the work of their forefathers in a way that not many other industries experience,” Mr Morris said.

“The careful approach he applies to every wine produced at Morris Wines is a refl ection of not only my work, but that of proceeding family members.

acclaim for our wines and maintaining the business for future generations is a process requiring continuous improvement, which we look forward to.”

The winery has a long tradition of producing full bodied red wines with long cellaring potential, magnifi cent vintage and tawny ports and continually awarded muscat and tokay.

Mr Morris said the family pioneered durif as a hero wine for the region, beginning with Mick Morris.

“Mick’s understanding of the tannin and structure of the variety allowed the production of many award winning wines,” Mr Morris said.

Since Mr Morris began 20 years ago, the Morris range of table, fortifi ed and sparkling

wines have collected an amazing 20 trophies and 223 medals, including 80 gold in 2003, and many of these can be viewed in the cellar door.

He said the rich and productive soils of “Browns Plains” have long produced full fl avored wines, and added that both the Knights and Mia Mia vineyards are one of very few commercial vineyards that continue to operate with a non irrigated system.

The winery houses many of its original features and continues to use open fermentation vats, basket presses and large woodstorage to maintain a style

of wine that allows maximum fruit expression. The cellar door is housed within the century old cellar, providing a very real winery experience among the many working casks and provides an insight into the production of the world

about wine? The access to and personal conversations with the winemakers

is one of the experience highlights at the Glenrowan winemakers, with many wine enthusiasts developing relationships with the region and the winemaking families from one event to the next.

Marketing manager Jennifer Booth said many visitors who attend the Queen’s Birthday long weekend celebration Trails, Tastings and Tales, love the genuine hospitality and ability to meet the winemakers so much that they come back for the popular Glenrowan Winemakers’ Weekend in October.

Trails, Tastings and Tales is once again set to be a popular event in the Glenrowan region.

“Bob’s Wine School is a one hour wine awareness session run by Bob Morrison from Morrison’s of Glenrowan. Given Bob is a former teacher, people really respond to how he shares his passion for winemaking,” Ms Booth said.

“The Muscat Blending workshop at Auldstone Cellars is also a hands-on experience and proves very popular.

“Part of our appeal is that the wineries are reasonably small, intimate and family run and that the Trails, Tastings and Tales celebration is family friendly.

“We offer live music, wine workshops, barista prepared coffee and handcrafted beer as well as every winery putting on a different gourmet food offering for the three days of the long weekend.”

The Trails, Tastings and Tales celebration is held from Saturday, June 8 through to Monday, June 10 and takes in fi ve wineries – Baileys of Glenrowan, Silent Range Estate, Auldstone Cellars, Booth’s Taminick Cellars and Morrisons of Glenrowan.

“To participate we offer a tasting glass for purchase at $5 which people take on the wine trail with them,” Ms Booth said.

“They also go into the draw for a Glenrowan winemakers’ pack of premium wines when they get their card stamped at all fi ve wineries over the weekend.”

The wineries are open from 10am-5pm over the three days. There will be a fi ve course degustation dinner matched with

Glenrowan regional wines, held at Rinaldo’s in Wangaratta on Sunday, June 9. Tickets for the dinner are $95 per person.

Beechworth BakeryWITH winter now upon

us, the main thing on everyone’s mind is – obviously – staying warm.

But even if you’re one of the many people who don’t like winter one little bit, winter has one redeeming feature that more than makes up for it: winter means - it’s soup time.

There’s not much that’s more satisfying than a hot bowl of

thick hearty soup with a crusty buttered roll for dunking, wouldn’t you agree?

Good thing that that’s exactly what’s available right through the cold season at all Beechworth Bakeries.

Changing daily, their range of delicious soups also include vegetarian and gluten free options.

Another way to stay warm,

apart from hanging out at Beechworth Bakery’s cosy warm and comfortable bakeries, is by trying out their great range of hot drinks. Their new extra large coffees offer you even more enjoyment, and for longer.

And while their beef and burgundy pies in the past have always been a seasonal offering during harvest time, you will now fi nd it on the

menu throughout winter due to popular demand.

You’re sure to fi nd the perfect way to keep body, mind and tummy happy and satisfi ed this winter whenever you visit one of the six Beechworth Bakeries, located in Beechworth, Albury, Echuca, Bendigo, Ballarat and Healesville.

MINISTER for Tourism and Major Events Louise

Asher and Minister for Roads Terry Mulder have launched the Victorian Coalition Government’s Motorcycle Tourism Strategy 2013-16.

Ms Asher said the Strategy is the fi rst of its kind for Victoria and aims to grow a largely untapped niche market, while underpinning the overall priority of rider safety.

“Victoria has some of the

most spectacular coastal and inland touring road routes and also hosts the nation’s two biggest motorcycle events at Phillip Island,” Ms Asher said.

“The Strategy will primarily target the intrastate market, essentially locals taking a weekend off to explore regional Victoria, while also focusing on interstate visitors attracted by major events.”

SAID to be one of Victoria’s most historic areas,

Beechworth’s heritage is deeply entrenched in the gold rush era and continues to live via its historical and cultural precinct in the centre of town.

Established in 1852 as a direct result of the discovery of gold in Spring Creek, it is one of the few Victorian towns that have retained the character and appearance it developed by the 1880s.

In the centre of Beechworth stands the town’s famous post offi ce, which has a clock that has chimed every hour since 1859.

It has stood the test of time, despite alterations and additions, and survived the disastrous Camp Street fi re in 1867.

Perhaps one of the most popular of Beechworth’s attractions is the courthouse, where visitors can see the dock

where Ned Kelly himself stood when on trial in 1880.

Meanwhile the Burke Museum, named in honor of Robert O’Hara Burke who was the town’s superintendent from 1854 to 1858, was built in 1863 and today features an array of displays about the town’s past.

A more recent addition to the precinct is the Powder Magazine on Gorge Road, built in 1859 in order to store gunpowder for the use of miners.

Gorge Road not only contains fascinating rock formations, but also majestic views of the town - one can see as far as the site of Ned Kelly’s lookout.

Walking through the town’s streets and buildings is like being transported back to life as it was in the second half of the 19th century - Beechworth is living, breathing, creating history every day.

Mt Buffalo Chalet

WORKS on the Great Alpine

Road will be suspended

over winter, allowing the road

to be opened to all without

restrictions from May 31.

VicRoads regional director

North Eastern Victoria, Graham

Freestone, said the crews

fi nished last vital works prior

to winter setting in, including

completing asphalting works

on two slip sites and getting

the area ready before winter

weather made roadworks

impractical.

“From May 31 we will lift

all restrictions on the road to

enable easy access to Mount

Hotham for the winter season,”

Mr Freestone said.

More information is available

on the VicRoads website.

WEEKS after the

announcement Mt Buffalo

Chalet would be refurbished, the

fi rst work has started at the iconic

building with an eye to having it

completed within 12 months.

This involves high priority

maintenance, including the

removal of asbestos, and project

planning and site assessments

being completed.

Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla)

described this as great news for

the region, as the push towards

creating a day visitor centre,

including regional information

centre, and possibly a café in the

original building begins.

“The Alpine Shire Council and

other local stakeholders have

thrown their support behind the

project to ensure the chalet will

be opened and well positioned to

attract private sector investment

as opportunities arise,” Mr Sykes

said.

“Planning is also under way

to redevelop the gardens to

complement the redeveloped

chalet building and surrounds.”

Once permits have been

fi nalised, major works to

remove non-heritage structures

from the site can go ahead.

“By spring, it is planned that

other building maintenance

work will be undertaken and

the regional information centre

and activity centre is expected

to be operating from within the

chalet in 2014,” Mr Sykes said.

Minister for Environment and

Climate Change Ryan Smith,

who recently announced the

government’s commitment of

$7 million in the chalet, said

the Department of Environment

and Primary Industries was

working closely with Parks

Victoria, the Alpine Shire

Council and other project

partners to ensure work on the

redevelopment is completed as

a high priority.

WHETHER you love art or antiques, or both, there is

plenty for you to see in Chiltern. A diverse feast of art can be

found on Queen’s Birthday weekend at the Chiltern Visual Arts Exhibition, to be held at the Chiltern Memorial Hall.

The exhibition, run by Chiltern Tourism and Development Inc, opens on Friday, June 7 from 7pm, with an entry fee of $10 to

This painting, called “Grumpy Rembrandt”, is by Tony Thornhill-Cole and was the winner of last year’s Chiltern Art Prize.

Fascinating events attend the opening.

It is then open daily through until June 10, from 10am-4pm with a $5 entry fee (under 16 admitted free).

All entries for the exhibition become eligible for the Chiltern Art Prize, which awards $1000 for the most outstanding artwork in the exhibition, and the exhibition is non-acquisitive, meaning all artists who enter are

free to sell their work. At least 300 entries are

expected to be submitted for the exhibition, which mainly features paintings, sculpture and photography, as well as some textile or jewellery pieces.

During the event, the Chiltern Artists Society will be holding a silent auction for paintings by members in the foyer of the exhibition, with proceeds towards the running of the exhibition.

Details and entry forms for the exhibition are available by emailing [email protected] or calling Meaghan Aitchison on 0447 032804.

Another highlight on the calendar is the Chiltern Antique Fair, run by Chiltern Tourism and Development and coordinated by local woman Erika Hansen.

Featuring a host of antiques and stallholders from right across Australia, the fair will open on Friday, August 23 from 7pm, and will run through the weekend until Sunday, August 25, open from 10am-5pm daily.

All items will be on sale from the Friday night opening onwards.

More information on both events is available on www.chilternvic.com.

Mansfi eld’s inviting streets.

CRISP clean air, stunning scenery, and some tasty local treats to savor;

Mansfi eld has it all for the winter visitor this year.

Mansfi eld is the gateway to Mt Buller and Stirling, however, down at ground level around Mansfi eld there are many things to do on your visit, whether it be outdoors, scenic drives, or indoors to keep everyone happy.

The High Country Rail Trail is a must do, and you can hire bikes if you don’t have

your own, or for the less active, a stroll through the Botanic Park, then on for a bite to eat at one of Mansfi eld’s many eateries is a great day out.

High Street has a huge range of shops with local arts and crafts, regional produce and wines, and giftware to keep you browsing, then head into the Historical Society just near the information centre, where, during June you can catch the VicRoads Centenary Exhibition featuring never before seen images going back to 1913.

For the kids, Mansfi eld Zoo has their resident white lions and hand feeding of many other animals as you wander the grounds.

Winter markets and live music are regular happenings, and the Mansfi eld Cinema is a great place to snuggle up and watch a movie on a cold winter’s day.

This and so much more is on offer, so call into the visitor information centre for the latest information and bookings.

dates back to the early 19th century.Settlement in the area fi rst followed in the footsteps of Hume

and Hovell after 1824, and in the late 1840s, squatters began establishing their properties and pastoral runs.

The town was not immune to the gold rush, with gold being discovered in the area in 1852 and miners of many different nationalities seeking their fortunes in the area, in Yackandandah and many surrounding towns.

By the late 1850s, the town had become much more established.Colonial establishments soon took the form of education, the

Roads Board (1862) and Postal Services.

In 1861 the telegraph arrived, in the early 1890s the railway and the local newspaper.

Reef mining came and went, and large scale mining also made its mark in the latter part of the 19th century.

Today, the community remains as vibrant, diverse, and close knit as ever, and the town’s rich history is refl ected in its streetscape, landmarks such as its bridges and memorial gardens, and more.

Chia and quinoa THE two most popular grains that are sold at Yackandandah

business Kinagrow are quinoa and chia, due to their health properties.

Neither of these seeds contains gluten and they are not related to grains such as wheat, rye, oats and barley. Chenopodium quinoa (quinoa) is related to beetroot, silverbeet and spinach. Salvia hispanica (chia) is related to mint, basil, oregano and sage.

Quinoa is a seed originating in Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, and chia is native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala and was a main part of the diet for the Aztecs and Mayans.

Quinoa and chia have high protein content and they are considered to be complete proteins, both are good sources of dietary fi bre, calcium and magnesium.

Qunioa is a good source of phosphorus and iron while chia is a good source of potassium. Chia is the richest plant based source of Omega 3, dietary fi bre and antioxidants.

Kinagrow stocks the Australian brand of chia from the Chia Co as this company uses sustainable practices and buying Australian reduces food miles and supports the local economy.

It comes in two colors - black and white - with no nutritional difference. Chia is often sprinkled over a meal, or added to bread, cereals, smoothies etc.

Kinagrow currently stocks the seed but oil and bran are available. For recipes and nutritional advice checkout the Chia Co website

at www.thechiaco.com.au.Kinagrow stocks quinoa as a seed and rolled fl akes; it is easy to

cook with and requires a short cooking time.

When customers purchase from Kinagrow whole foods, they can choose how much you want, giving them the power to decide how much you want of any product.

You can buy for a family or for one and to suit your budget, so you can trial products such as quinoa or chia without waste or expense.
