2 Friday, August 30th, 2013 = North Island Cruisers Show 'N Shine
– Jim Johnson
It’s our 21st annual “Show ‘n’ Shine”. We have a great day planned for the participants and spectators alike. We expect many
new entries… an incredible line up of antiques, hot rods, muscle cars, race cars, sports cars and exotics… de nitely something for everyone. Campbell River has an abundance of really cool cars, and often the only time we really get to see them is at this show. Couple this with the participants who travel from far and wide to show there beautiful pieces of rolling art while experiencing our awesome scenery, and you have a weekend to remember.
Our feature vehicle this year is the “Rowdy Crowd Racing’s Nitro Harley”! Imaging going over 220mph (320 kph) in a quarter mile on two wheels! Their truck and hauler will also be on display. Maybe we’ll get the chance to hear some noise and smell some nitro! We also expect a “Junior Dragster”. We really want to encourage the younger crowd to participate, so a special “Young Guns” trophy will be awarded to an entry owned by someone under 30 years of age.
Our Saturday evening cruise was a hit last year, so we decided to extend it. See the details in this pullout. Set up your lawn chairs and watch the cars cruise by. Our participants love to cruise and it gives us a chance to show o our great city to our visitors.
Once again we had generous support from the local business community. The Downtown BIA has organized a shopping tour for our participants. Campbell River businesses also donate “door prizes” that are given to participants. The sponsor support allows us to present the “Reunion” show band at Spirit Square during our event. Room for parking all these neat machines is courtesy Tyee Plaza, City of Campbell River (for Shopper’s Row) and Spirit Square. Our “Top Pick” trophies are award to the “picks” of the sponsors, our members, and we have a “RCMP Pick”. We don’t judge… just pick cars we see as special in one way or another. We appreciate every entrant and “Thank You” for participating. Show & Shine

Message from the chair of the car show committee
Jim & his wife Patti moved to Campbell River seven years ago from Alberta to be close to the grandkids. They love the area and brought along their ’40 Ford (pictured), ’84 Corvette, and the ’37 Ford they dated in way back in the early ’60s. Jim is Chair of this year’s Car Show Committee and Past President of the North Island Cruisers.
The North Island Cruisers is a car club made up of car enthusiasts from all walks of life… the hobby connects us all. For some it’s the fun of building, others it’s proudly showing, and maybe just the fun of cruising around in a neat vehicle. We invite new members; just bring your passion for cars! The club o cially became a “not for pro t society” in 1992. Each year we support local charities and actively promote the car hobby. It’s safe to say that this event has contributed over $25,000 to local charities over the years. We welcome new members… For m ore info check out: www.nicruisers.ca

Anyone winning one of these beauties will surely cherish it. It should be noted that the North Island Cruisers members do not compete for these trophies.

FROM THE GROUND UPThis 1969 Camaro was purchased from a co-worker 12 years ago. The pictures show the transformation from a well worn white car to what it is now a nished (almost) vehicle. It was stripped inside and out to bare metal then placed on a rotisserie to better access all sides of the car. The car was relatively rust free which is unusual for a 30 plus year old car. The only panel replaced was the door skin which wasn’t rusty but worn thin from previous body work. It was then coated with more modern products like epoxy primers then worked out from there. While the body remains in stock form the running gear was extensively modi ed. The engine has most of the internals replaced with tougher parts. The valve train is
completely rollerized then the short block is topped o with aluminum heads, AIR-Gap intake, and the carburetor has been replaced with F.A.S.T. fuel
injection. The accessory drive kit is a late model GM serpentine system. MSD ignition puts things in to motion. The transmission is a 700R4
overdrive unit and the later model 8.5” corporate rear end contains 3.42 gears, Auburn posi. and Moser
axles. The car rides on 17” Foose Legend wheels and Nitto 555 tires. The whole interior was covered with a sound deadener (Dynamat). The interior is all new,
original black carpet, upholstery and headliner. Auto Meter gauges are tted to the stock console and
the shifter adapted to control the 4 speed automatic. Music is supplied through a Custom Auto Sound 630NA unit
and Kenwood speakers. The body work and initial prep was done at home. Special thanks to Henry and #1 Autobody for the nal blocking and application of the water borne 2012 GM “Ashen Grey” paint and clear coat.
Plans for this Winter include installation of new front bolstered seat foams with stock appearing covers and 4 wheel Wilwood disc brakes.
My thanks to Alex McIntosh Photography for photos of the nished car.

• Over 600 of your friends and family work in the Downtown Business Improvement Associati on (BIA). They live, work and are invested in your community - just like you.
• The Downtown BIA is comprised of over 60 businesses and employers, the third largest source of employment in Campbell River. The BIA extends from Pure Self Defense in the south to the Royal Bank in the north including Tyee Plaza.
• BIA merchants support local chariti es, causes, sports teams and events. Non-profi ts receive considerably more support from local businesses than they do from out-of-town businesses. If you need help with an event you more than likely won’t talk to a merchant from Courtenay, Nanaimo or Victoria - you’ll approach a local business. BIA businesses are generous- think of the Wearable Art Fashion Show, Lunches in the Square, Easter Event, Art Fest, Canada Day, Starlight Shopping and the Big Truck Parade.
• When you shop with local merchants, more of your money stays close to home. Buying goods and services locally means two to three ti mes as much money spent stays in the local economy.
• A local business is much more concerned about keeping you happy by providing good customer service.
• Before you head out of town, take a good look through the local shops, chances are you will fi nd what you are looking for. Why spend more money on gas, wear and tear on your vehicle by shopping out of town?
Help keep BIA business owners “in business” and keep our Downtown thriving.
