The love of the open road and a generosity of spirit will bring Vancouver Island motorcycle enthusiasts together this Saturday.

Riders will come together for the second annual Rotary Ride for Jeneece that winds its way along the beautiful roads from Courtenay to Gold River - and you are invited to come along for the ride! This year they expect more than 100

bikes to take the tour. Participant check

in begins at 9:30 a.m. at Weavers Leather on Cliffe Avenue and riders take to the road at 10:30 a.m. Along the route there will be a stop at the Quinsam Hotel in Campbell River and another rest station at the Elk Portal before arriving at Pipers on the Ridge Pub in Gold River.

Riders will arrive to a festive atmosphere

that includes door prizes, a silent auction and entertainment provided by Comox Valley’s own Boondocks.

Net proceeds from this event will be donated to the Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island and will be directed toward the operation of Jeneece Place. Jeneece Place is located only steps

away from Victoria General Hospital and it provides a home away from home for families who travel to Victoria for their child’s medical care.

The house opened its doors to guests on Jan. 23, 2012 and since that date it has been full to capacity almost every night with families from all over Vancouver Island.

The house was originally built

thanks to the vision of Jeneece Edroff and the generous support of the community. The Foundation continues to accept donations to help with operating costs, which are approximately $325,000 per year.

The annual Rotary Ride for Jeneece makes a stop at the Quinsam Hotel in Campbell River during the fundraising ride from Courtenay to Gold River on Saturday.

WOSS—Carihi Secondary School’s Forestry Program in Campbell River was presented a $1,000 donation from Western Forest Products (WFP), following a tour of WFP’s Logging Fundamentals Training Program at the Englewood Forest Operation in Woss.

John Mann, VP of Timberlands for WFP, presented the cheque to Carihi’s Forestry Program teacher, Jason Kerluck, at a dinner capping off the recent tour.

“Loggers trained to safely and efficiently harvest timber are critical to the forest industry,” said Mann. “WFP proudly supports Campbell River’s Carihi Forestry Program, which we expect will help respond to the growing need for new, skilled loggers to support our business.”

In September 2012, WFP, the largest forest products employer on the coast of B.C., successfully launched its Logging Fundamentals Training Program on Vancouver Island to help fill a growing labour gap created by the retirement of skilled workers. This innovative and comprehensive program demonstrates WFP’s commitment to invest in the future. The program teaches students the fundamentals of logging, provides practical training to work safely and productively in a harvesting environment, and helps graduates become strong candidates for employment in the logging industry.

within the forest industry community. The 20-person tour group included representatives from two high schools, four post-secondary schools, six forest companies, the Ministry of Forest Lands and Natural

Resource Operations, the Truck Loggers Association and industrial training agencies. Tour participants met with WFP’s current class of six logging trainees learning the trade under the supervision of two experienced

instructors. The student trainees demonstrated solid skills and agility while working in a non-production, low-pressure environment.

As a sustainable wood products producer, WFP sees a promising future for

B.C.’s coastal forestry industry.

“Over the next decade, with the retirement of skilled workers, we anticipate increased employment opportunities for new workers across the forestry industry,” said Don Demens,

President and CEO of WFP. “In anticipation of this shift, we have developed our Logging Fundamentals Program as well as a new program for training fallers, which we expect to expand in the future. The skills developed in our

programs help prepare candidates for work, providing them the skills and approach to operate safely and efficiently in our coastal industry.”

Since its inception last fall, WFP’s two classes of six graduates have become employed in the North Island forest industry – many of them hired on by WFP, with other logging companies interested in future graduates.

The seven-week Logging Fundamentals Training Program can accommodate 18 students per year. The program is based on the WorkSafe materials for cable yarding, developed and delivered by WFP. It is endorsed by the United Steel Workers Union and has received funding support directly from WFP and through the Coast Sustainability Trust II.

When an angler catches a big � sh the news spreads like wild� re around Campbell River. Mike Gage got his Tyee that came in at 61.5 pounds and Mike currently leads the leader board at the Tyee Club in Campbell River. The rowers and anglers are out in full force as the � sh are coming in.The evening hours are the best time to drive out and watch the boats jockey for position in the Tyee pool in hopes of catching the big one. On August 12th, Ryan Bell got his 40 pound Tyee � shing off Discovery Pier in Campbell River. Ryan was using a Buzz Bomb lure and his � sh is the third recorded to date. The pier is a great place to watch anglers, and rods can be rented for the day. The Campbell River will be steady with anglers going after pink salmon and the upper pools are � shable with the heavy concentration of anglers � shing on the weekend. Lures or � ies in pink, green or blue colors will be thrown out in the water until

the end of September. The Sayward � shing derby is on this weekend with prizes given out on Sunday. The Roberts Lake � shing derby is a fun day event with lots of trout being caught, Saturday September 21st the � shing starts at dawn and wraps up at 5 with prizes awarded. Students at North Island College are returning to campuses in September to find new water bottle refilling stations have replaced old fountains.

“Students are excited that the College has begun to respond to our efforts to make NIC bottled water free by increasing access to public water on our campuses” said Jacelyn Lobay, Chairperson of the North Island

Students’ Union (NISU). “As an educational institution that covers most of the North Island, it is vital for NIC to take leadership on sustainability issues.”

NISU has been petitioning the College through the Back the Tap campaign, a campaign of the Canadian Federation of Students that calls for eliminating the sale of bottled water on campuses. Student

representatives have met with the College on a number of occasions advocating for a ban on bottled water sales and installation of new water stations. Health and environmental concerns, and the commodification of public water are driving the campaign.

Staff and students are encouraged to carry reusable bottles and use the new water distribution system that tracks the amount of plastic bottles that have been diverted from landfills. “Over 1,000 reusable water

bottles have been distributed to students by their student association since the campaign began, and over 700 plastic bottles have already been saved from landfills at just one station since it was installed”, said Lobay.

Since 2010, Students’ Unions across Canada have been campaigning on campuses to ban the sale of bottled water. Many municipalities and institutions, including Vancouver Island University, have already made this commitment.
