Plenty of smiles, laughter and excited buzz filled a room at Crown Isle Resort as Courtenay High School graduates from 1963 gathered for their 50-year reunion.

The reunion kicked off with a meet and greet June 7 for grads and teachers only.

“A lot of us go right back to Grade 1,” said grad Bob Ash, noting the last class reunion was 30 years ago. “And there’s some people we haven’t seen for 50 years, so people are pretty excited.”

A number of past elementary, junior high and high school teachers attended the reunion, and two in particular added a special touch to the evening; Shirley Grant, (nee Banks), 83, and Anna Butler, (nee Golicz), 79, each taught some of the grads during their Grade 1 year.

“Absolutely wonderful,” said Butler of seeing her old students, after a presentation honouring her and Grant. “I think it’s the greatest thing for them to even think of inviting us, and to see them all — it’s just the loveliest feeling.”

Grant added her past students appeared to have achieved great things in their lives.

“They certainly all seemed to continue with their education and have accomplishments that they’re proud of,” she said. “How wonderful for them to come back and see their friends but for us to be able to see them after so many years it’s — you just want to hug them.”

Grant was in her early 20s when she taught these grads and Butler was just 19 and in her first year of teaching. The two teachers grew

up in Cumberland and have remained close friends over the years, attending each other’s weddings, and regularly corresponding and visiting once Grant moved to the Okanagan in the late 1960s.

Grad Ross Dingwall spoke about the grad class’ early schooling years, noting many of them started their schooling in Courtenay in 1951 and 1952. He added there was a shortage of elementary classrooms in Courtenay during these years and classes in the late 40s and early 50s were held in ex-military buildings located where the Lewis Centre parking lot now is.

He recalled entering Grade 1 and not knowing any writing, reading or math skills, and noted the skill and patience Grade 1 teachers, especially, would have needed to teach students those essential skills.

“I think we owe

a big thanks to all the teachers that we had over the years but I think these two ladies are extremely special and I feel really honoured to have them here tonight,” he added.

Ash noted Courtenay High School’s graduating class of ‘63 was the first year students from Cumberland and Tsolum high schools were transferred over to Courtenay High School, making a larger grad class than previous years.

Saltwater � shing for salmon and halibut has picked up dramatically in the past week especially at The Hump when Jason Dobos from Campbell River caught his 38 pound Tyee using a Blue Meannie Hootchie and a green � asher. Bates Beach and Kitty Coleman are producing good catches of salmon at the moment. Regular catches coming in are between 12 and 18 pounds. Anglers report salmon and halibut are full of herring and needle� sh. Alex McKay was the overall winner at the Perry Assu and Charlie Henderson memorial trout derby on Buttle Lake June 8th and 9th. More than 110 anglers were in attendance and his � sh of 3 pounds and 6 ounces was the winner. Lots of anglers won prizes at the Derby. A family fun derby will be held at Roberts Lake on Saturday, September 21st. This is a free family fun

derby with Lorna Duncan supplying the lemonade and hotdogs. At Discovery Pier Campbell River the � rst salmon is yet to be landed

but regulars on the pier are saying the � sh will be biting soon. Bottom � sh can be caught on a regular basis and anglers are visiting the pier from Regina, Edmonton and Vancouver. The Pier is a social gathering for � shermen and tourists and lots of � shing stories are told.

Shakespeare famously asked, “What’s in a name?” When it comes to acupuncture, a needle – like a rose – by any other name would be just as sweet.

In needling, the name game is truly at play – think dry needling, trigger-point needling, biomedical acupuncture, intramuscular stimulation (IMS) and more. Call it what you will, however, if an acupuncture needle is being inserted into the skin, it is some form of acupuncture.

While Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners have advocated the benefits of needling for more than 3,000 years, Western health practitioners are relatively recent converts.

As they come to recognize its worth, though, they’re adopting and adapting acupuncture to suit their practices, often renaming it in the process to sound

more “medical” or “scientific.” What a physiotherapist might refer to as a trigger

point, for example, an acupuncturist might call an ashi point. But make no mistake; it’s all acupuncture.

To the layperson, it can all be quite

confusing. Some people believe that medical professionals needle deeper than acupuncturists.

This is a myth. (Treatment actually depends on the practitioner, the condition being treated and the placement of the needles.)

Some therapies, such as IMS, claim to be based on neuroanatomy and modern science.

In fact, acupuncturists commonly use a neuroanatomical approach in conjunction with Traditional Chinese Medical point function, giving them a greater clinical advantage.

Unlike other medical practitioners, acupuncturists and doctors of Chinese Medicine have undertaken years of acupuncture instruction and can offer numerous needling therapies, including neurofunctional acupuncture, acupoint

injection therapy and moxibustion.

And because they’re regulated by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of BC, they can assure their patients of both comprehensive medical expertise and thousands of hours of clinical training.

It’s time for Western medical practitioners to start calling a spade a spade, and a needle a needle.

Negativity and resentment can – and do – rear their ugly heads in even the most loving relationships.

Over time, and without conscious awareness, this negativity can sneak through the back door of your mind and affect your overall self-perception, confidence and esteem.

Though it only takes a moment for your partner to say something hurtful, the effect of those words multiplies every time you replay them in your mind.

How can you prevent this, and empower your own self-confidence? With four simple words: “I REJECT that

suggestion.”Say your partner

comes home from work to a sink full of dirty dishes and, during the ensuing “discussion,” you’re accused of being lazy.

When we’re able to be objective, some accusations can be a good way to learn about ourselves and challenge our beliefs.

If the accusation is not true, however, then we must reject it. Protect yourself by taking a deep breath and saying to yourself, “I reject that suggestion.” As simple as it sounds, this sends

a powerful signal to your subconscious mind to let the statement go.

Often it’s not our partners that are the worst offenders. I know very few people who talk to others as badly as they talk to themselves, so be sure to use these four words

“internally” as well. They’re just as effective when you think them as when you say them.

It can also work the other way around. When words are spoken in love and are in alignment with your beliefs, stating

“I ACCEPT that suggestion” will give your relationship and self-confidence a boost.

This simple technique is akin to turning up the volume of things that resonate in alignment with your character and turning down the volume of things that don’t. The couples I work with are amazed how much better they feel when implementing these two simple tips.
