Term 3 Week 6 19 August 2014
Congratulations to our PSSA teams
We have been very impressed by the
enthusiastic participation and the
sportsmanship of our Winter PSSA teams. This
was evident when they performed their chants
and songs at assembly recently.
Two of our teams, girls Tiger tag and junior
boys soccer, played in the grand finals on Friday. Both games were
well supported by some very passionate spectators. The games
were very exciting and each student demonstrated their skills.
Congratulations to both teams! Both won their finals!
Thank you to all our PSSA team coaches, Sue Chiddy, Erika
Longhitano and Jess Fazl. And thank you to the many members of
the cheer squad.
It’s Book Week!
Book Week has finally arrived! It’s a celebration of anything and
everything to do with books – books we’ve read, books we’d like to
read, old books, new books, e-books and everything in between.
This year’s theme is ‘Connect to Reading’ – you can find out more,
including the winners of the Book of the Year awards, at the
Children’s Book Council of Australia’s website,
http://cbca.org.au/index.htm!
Come and choose from some great books at our Scholastic Book
Fair this week! Opening times are as follows:
Wednesday 20 August 8:00am - 9:00am
3:00pm - 4:00pm
Friday 22 August 8:00am – 9:00am
3:00pm - 4:00pm
Monday 25 August 8:00am - 9:00am
3:00pm - 4:00pm
On Wednesday, our students will be learning the art of illustration
as they participate in hands-on workshops with cartoonist, Tony
Murphy. Watch this space next week to see some original work
from some of our budding artists.
Happy Book Week, all!
Reading: it’s the way to grow!

School Rules
We are continuing to focus on developing a clear understanding of
our school rules. This week the focus of our teaching is ‘We sit to
eat’. We want children to take time to eat properly before they play.
This is important for good health. It is also good manners and a
matter of safety. Thank you for supporting our focus.

P&C News
Canteen News
It was agreed at the P&C meeting last week, that the canteen is a
service rather than a main fundraising opportunity. Having
discussed the options for managing a sustainable canteen, the
P&C have decided not to pursue the option of hiring a paid canteen
co-ordinator due to the personal liabilities it would impose on the
P&C executive. With this in mind, the P&C have voted to
investigate the option of completely outsourcing the canteen
function in line with the DEC canteen licence agreements.
A small group of parents will work with the school as we begin the
tender process to outsource the canteen. This tender process will
take a number of months and we hope to have a new company in
place for the start of 2015.
We are aware that there are families who have money sitting in
their School24 account and, at this stage; we are hoping that
School24 will continue being used as the online ordering option.
The Canteen Committee have a record of this amount and will
ensure that this is returned to families if the need arises. There will
be a number of planned canteen open days through the remainder
of the year so families are welcome to leave their money in their
account should they wish.
Are you available to open the canteen for a day?
It would be great if the canteen could open for some hot food days
while the P&C works on the long term solution. If there are any
parents or friends who would like to team up and coordinate the
opening of the canteen for orders or snacks any day this term or
next, please contact Jodie on 0402 424 556 or at
[email protected]. This could be a one off day or a regular
arrangement.
Sushi Day
The next Sushi Day will be held Tuesday 16 September. The sushi
is provided by Kyoto Emporium on Blenheim Road who will also be
providing sandwiches similar to those in the picture below.
Sandwiches are $3.50 for 4 pieces (Note: there are 6 in the photo)
and are available with:
Cooked tuna and cucumber
Cooked tuna and avocado
Carrot, cucumber and avocado
Order through the Sushi Day special
event on School24.
Several volunteers will be needed to help sort the sushi and serve
at lunch time. Please contact Jodie on 0402 424 556 if you can
help.
North Ryde Public School Games and Trivia Night
I am sure that a number of you will recall what a fantastic night we
had last year at our very first NRPS Games Night. Well our fund
raising team have been in planning for yet another successful
evening. Put the date in your diary and watch this space for more
information in the next few weeks.
Rotary Club Fun Run
I am sure many of you are familiar with the fantastic work that our
local Rotary Club have been doing. Recently they facilitated the
shipping our old brown and gold uniforms to a school in Green
Valley, New Guinea.
The North Ryde Rotary Club are currently organising a Fun Run to
be held at Macquarie University sporting fields. There will be races,
games, food and drink and entertainment.
If you are interested in attending/participating, please keep an eye
on next week’s newsletter for further information.

Band News
Last week a note went home regarding a combined
KMA band concert for Sunday 19 October at the
Pacific Hills Christian School Performing Arts Centre
in Dural. This concert is for all the schools where KMA teach music.
It would be appreciated if you could return the survey note stating if
your child is available or not available to be part of the concert.
For the students who will miss their tuition lesson on Thursday 28
August due to the Zone Athletics carnival, a make-up lesson will try
to be scheduled before the end of Term 3.
Tutorials / Band Rehearsal
It would greatly help if parents could please keep track of their
child’s tutorial attendance. If you know that your child will be absent
from either a tutorial or a band rehearsal, please notify KMA
[email protected] If you have any queries
regarding missed lessons, please do contact the KMA office direct.
Colleen Hutcheon - Band Coordinator
Please keep those re-enrolment forms coming in as these
guarantee placements for next year.
For further information about the centre please contact us via email
on [email protected] or phone 0408 825 733
Alternatively visit the centre.
Many thanks - Kerry, Fei- Lin, Amanda, Lewis and Dani

Our Peer Support program
During Peer Support this week children will be looking at how to
play in a friendly way in order to maintain friends and build positive
relationships. Through various activities children will discover the
importance of taking turns and having consistent rules throughout a
game. This week help your child practise these skills by
encouraging them to play games with their siblings, family or
friends.

Schoolhouse Museum News
Wet day activity 1916 style
We enjoy reading through the early NSW syllabuses in our
collection as they show how schooling and society has changed.
School flower, vegetable and agricultural plots were quite important
in the past with whole sections of the syllabus providing detailed
month-by-month instructions on plantings and maintenance. We
loved this paragraph from the 1916 syllabus about using wet days
at school to teach the finer art of flower arranging.

Impressive work!
Buddy iPad
Kindergarten and their Year 5 & 6 Buddies have swapped ‘Buddy
Reading’ for ‘Buddy iPad’.
Using our ‘Pet’ unit as a stimulus, Kindergarten brainstormed
information about cats with their buddy. This week students used
either Comic Maker or Book Creator apps to start creating a comic
or iBook about cats….stay tuned for the final results.

PSSA Finals – Soccer
Last Friday the junior boys soccer team played in the grand final
against Hunters Hill. Everyone was extremely excited about the
match. The boys played a fantastic game and had a 3-0 lead at half
time. The second half brought more goals, with the game finishing
in a well-deserved 4-1 victory to North Ryde. Congratulations to
goal scorers Aryan (2 goals), Cooper and Jude. The entire team
can be extremely proud of their performance, and were wonderful
representatives for North Ryde Public School.
Thank you to all the supporters who cheered on the team. A special
thank you to the parents and grandparents who came to support
the boys in the grand final. Thank you also to all the parents and
grandparents who have come to support various teams throughout
the season.
