Over the past year, the Board of Directors for the NSCA has met monthly to discuss, plan, and research, how we can best lobby for a curling venue on the North Shore. Our focus last year was on a presentation to the North Vancouver Recreation Commission (NVRC).

After many preliminary talks between Mark Bailey and various parties, including NVRC, it became apparent that many politicians and bureaucrats believe a curling facility cannot operate without being subsidized by public funding, and any presentation was not going to be effective. As there was a great deal of misinformation with regard to the cost of curling at the North Shore Winter Club, the Board decided to first show that a curling facility can be self-sufficient.

Accordingly, the focus of the Board changed to one of gathering information. Mark Bailey and Brian Ulrich spent many hours gathering information from curling rinks across the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. A number of curling facilities provided their revenue and operating costs for the last several years on the understanding that Mark would keep this information confidential.

The hope was to develop an operating budget that would prove curling is viable, based on an older facility.

Mark and Brian have also researched the costs for a new facility and drafted a financial model for a 6-8 sheet facility.

…Board Update

To summarize, Mark and Brian have used the data gathered from these operating curling facilities to create 2 operating budgets: a very detailed financial model demonstrating a conservative budget to show that curling rinks can operate without being subsidized; and, a parallel financial model for what the budget would be for a new facility. The Board has also realized that we should start planning to build our own facility, rather than waiting for one to be built for us. Dave Vyner spent many hours in discussions with the Planning Department of the North Vancouver District regarding potential public land that could be granted for a curling facility. We are still in this process. As well, Dave has been researching facility building costs and designs of new rinks being built; building a new facility equates to approximately $1 million per sheet of ice. Liz Goldenberg has been busy working with Mel Murray of Curl BC to develop a presentation to solicit sponsorships and corporate contributions. Going forward, we will ask the Sport Council for their endorsement of a public curling facility on the North Shore, and we will be making formal presentations to both municipal councils. For 2016, the NSCA is planning to lobby our politicians to revise misconceptions they have about the need for a curling facility on the North Shore. There will be contact on a one-to-one basis, as well as a formal presentation at council meetings. At the same time, we will start the process of acquiring corporate and private sponsorships to assist in attaining our capital financial goals. We also need to strive to increase our membership base, which is currently at 150 members. This is essential when meeting with North Shore officials and corporate sponsors. In the 2014/15 curling season, 575 North Shore curlers were affiliated with Curl BC; we need support from all of these curlers.

The Professional Engineer’s Curling League curls at the Vancouver Curling Club every Saturday morning from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. We currently have 14 teams and would like to expand to 16 teams. We would prefer that all teams have at least 1 professional engineer, but this is not mandatory. We’re the only league anywhere that still curls the originally traditional full 10 ends. All other leagues curl 8 ends, or less. Our league has been going for over 50 years and there is a good balance between being competitive and social. In other words, we have a lot of fun but at the same time we are out to win. The fee for a 19-game season is in the range of $375. This fee includes: 1. Your actual curling costs 2. An opening mini bonspiel where 16 fresh apple pies are awarded to the best teams 3. A turkey shoot in late December where 16 real turkeys (not gift certificates) are awarded to the winning teams 4. Closing ceremony at the end of the season where over $2,000 in fine wines are awarded. (All teams get some wine with

the winningest teams getting the best wine) 5. We do not have any 50/50 draws or anything like that to finance league activities. Your fee includes everything.

…The Professional Engineer’s Curling League In a nutshell, you simply can’t go wrong by joining our league. It is the best possible league to curl in. The 8:30 starting time on Saturday morning has lots of benefits. First of all, it gets you going for the weekend. The curling fees are lower because we are curling during an off-peak period. And finally, parking at the curling rink is not an issue, in comparison to curling on a weekday evening. Please join our league and we will guarantee you a good time and you will meet a lot of new friends. For further information contact Keith Fenton, League Manager, at [email protected] or phone at 604-926-7586.

This is an invitation to our North Shore Ladies to sign up with our North Shore Masters League if they wish to participate in the PCMCA playdowns. The PCMCA (Pacific Coast Masters Curling Association) was exclusively a men’s organization prior to this year. With the encouragement of Curl BC, we are pleased to include Ladies and Mixed Team membership options. Last year several of our North Shore Ladies were invited to compete in the 2015 playdowns at Richmond. In order to compete in the PCMCA playdowns in the Ladies and Mixed categories, teams and individual members from the North Shore are required to sign up with our league. The PCMCA membership fee is $5 per person. Participants must be 60 years of age by December 31 and play regularly in a daytime curling league. The provincial playdowns are scheduled for March 15-18 in Kelowna. Please contact Gary Dunnet or Roger Smith for more information. Dave’s Blog

Merry Christmas!

nscurling.ca [email protected]

Well it’s that time of year when we all are making out our wish lists for O’l Saint Nick. For curlers on the North Shore I am sure a new curling rink ranks right up there at the top of the list. I am, as I’m sure are others who have managed to find other distant rinks to play at, happy to be curling and meeting new friends. However, we would all, including all those unable to find space at another rink or unable to curl off the North Shore, rather be curling and meeting new curlers at our own rink on the North Shore!

But I digress – our North Shore curlers wish list!! After getting past the basics, and don’t we all wish we still had what was really only the basics where we curled until last year – a roof, four walls, and an ice surface to curl on and curling rocks to curl with. What would be on your wish list for our new curling rink??

Here are a few to get you started:

-‐ 6 sheets of ice (maybe, if we are REALLY good Santa can add an extra 2 sheets). -‐ a NEW ice plant (not a refurbished, repurposed, etc. one, as was given to us by

the Grinch in the past). -‐ Setup our new curling Facility to operate under a Board of Directors of curlers,

and have volunteers and paid staff, run the operation.

Now it is your turn to add to the list and let your N.S. Curling Assoc. and O’l Saint Nick know what your wishes are for our new curling facility. You curlers out there that have now had a chance to curl at other facilities, I am sure have seen what the rest of the curling community have, and will have all kinds of ideas.

Be creative and include your reasons, comments or any other innuendo regarding your wishes because, as you know, Kris Kringle is making a list and your embellishment of your wishes might just be what pushes his buttons (or at least makes him chuckle with glee at the audacity of your wish)!!

Let’s all get behind this and all send our lists to O’l Saint Nick c/o North Shore Curling Assoc. We will post the resulting list and best embellishments for all to see and try and draw up the resulting building as well.

We have made arrangements with the North Pole Postal Service to take all lists, even those sent in the New Year so don’t let us down now!!!
