Mayor Darrell Mussatto andchallengers Kerry Morris andGeorge Pringle traded barbs and bonmots in a debate that veered from awaterfront ferris wheel to the citysburgeoning skunk population beforea spirited CentennialTheatre crowdSunday.

The three politicians vying to leadthe City of NorthVancouver over thenext four years unanimously supportedpreserving public spaces at shutteredschools Cloverley and the Lucas Centre, but Morris stood alone in suggesting the city buy the lands.

I think if the school district is going to be short-sighted and sell theirlands, then the City of NorthVancouver should acquire them, he said.I look at these properties as a public asset that will be needed sometimedown the road, and to reacquire those lands at excessive retail prices willnever happen.

That purchase would deplete city funds and result in a signicant taxhike, according to Mussatto.

Cpl. Richard DeJong, NorthVancouverRCMP spokesman, saidin both incidents, theman reportedly called toteenaged girls from hisvehicle. When the girlswalked over, the manrequested a sexual favour inexchange for cash, said DeJong.

The man then exposedhimself. In both cases, thegirls ran away and eithercalled their families orpolice.

The victims, two 15-year-olds and a 17-year-old,were not touched or harmedphysically, De Jong said.

The suspect is describedas being 25 to 35 years oldwith olive skin, weighingabout 85 kilograms. He hasshort black hair and a beardand was wearing a whiteshirt and dark jeans at thetime of the incidents.

Its uncommon forthis type of behaviour tooccur in NorthVancouverbut when it does, ofcourse, police take it veryseriously, De Jong said.We encourage parents to

remind their children ofthe dangers of speaking tostrangers, to be aware of thisvehicle and the behaviourof the driver. If the publicsees this vehicle, they areasked not to approach itbut to note the licence platenumber and call 9-1-1.

In the meantime, police are taking witnessstatements and canvassingthe area for any surveillancevideo that might havecaptured the incidents.RCMP crime analysts aresearching for any suspectswho match the prole.

precipitating factor inboth rescues, Bonnevillesaid its not realistic to askdog walkers to keep theircanines tethered in thearea.

You could say dogsshould be on leashes but

it aint going to happen. Its a big open forestedwalking area, he said.Instead, keep your dogsaway from swollen rivers.Dogs make bad judgmentstoo.

    Binging bruin trapped inBrit Properties

    [email protected]

Conservation ofcersare putting the warningout: black bears are ona hungry push to packon pounds before theirwinter hibernation.

Conservation ofcerscaught a bear in the BritishProperties late last week

after it had broken intoan Andover Crescentgarage by pushing on thedoor until the bolt broke, according to conservationofcer Simon Gravel.

This bear was 400pounds. For him, itsnothing to push through adoor like this, Gravel said.

The bears efforts wererewarded with easy accessto a meal of unsecuredgarbage.

Gravel said the bearwould likely be droppedoff about 40 kilometresup a backcountry loggingroad. The hope is that he

nd his own sources offood and not be chasedaway by another bear thathas already claimed thatterritory. Likely, though, the bear will be backand looking for moreeasy meals in the sameneighbourhood.

Its not a very goodsolution for us to relocatea bear like this but wedlike to put the burden onpeople and not on thebears as much as we can.Well destroy the bear if hebecomes a risk to the publicand hes really on thethreshold. Its really on the

people in the communityto save that bear by makingsure he doesnt have anyreward anymore.

The only thing worsewould be if the bearconfronted someone insidetheir home.

If you have a bearlike this in your kitchen, youre going to lose thebattle. Its potentially verydangerous.Thats why itsso important for everyoneto not be negligent andinvest in proper storage.

Everyone in bear-proneneighbourhoods should bekeeping their yards, garagesand sheds free of anythingthat may attract bears, including garbage, fallenfruit, birdseed or even dirtybarbecues.

    Concerto.Its the most known cello

concerto. It is a spectacularwork that is incrediblybeautiful very grandstyle. Just a really gorgeous, gorgeous romantic concerto,he says.

Featuring some beautiful, soaring melodies, theorchestral parts are equally

    as interesting as the solosections.

Its not that yourejust hearing the soloist runaround and the orchestrais kind of twiddling theirthumbs. Especially theprincipal wind parts havesome spectacular melodiesthemselves. So its a showcasefor the orchestra, he says.

The people who want tocome will absolutely be just

taken with what a beautifulpiece it is. Hopefully they willbe inspired, he adds.

Tankers are held to strict, internationally accepted construction and operating standards. Any vessel proposing to visit Westridge must go through pre-screening and physical inspection. Only double hulled tankers of modern design are accepted. The Canadian Coast Guard monitors every vessels passage. All employees are trained in operations, safety and emergency response procedures. All vessels have a boom enclosure throughout loading operations. Two local pilots are on board loaded tankers during every movement. Tug escorts are required to accompany all laden tankers. Dedicated local marine-based spill response organization, WCMRC, ensures quick action

in the event of a spill. Marine spill response will be enhanced.

Trans Mountain has been operating atWestridge Terminal for six decades withouta single spill from tanker operations, due inpart to the stringent precautions we put inplace. Close collaboration between PilotageAuthorities, Transport Canada, the CanadianCoast Guard and Port Metro Vancouverensures vessels navigate our waters safely, guided by highly qualied local pilots.

    KayMeekCentre celebrates 10 years

    JEREMY [email protected]

Not everyone getscrooner AmandaWoodand community chorusBurstin with Broadwayto play their 10thbirthday party.

The KayMeek Centreturns 10 years old on Nov.6, an occasion slated to becelebrated with musicians, singers and performers.

For author GrantLawrence, the KayMeekCentre was that lot where hisclassmates atWestVancouversecondary would take smokebreaks in the 1980s.Morethan 20 years later, Lawrencewon a B.C. Book Prize forAdventures in Solitude at theKayMeek.

When writer and actressTaylor Hill was lookingfor sets for her micro-budget dance contestmockumentary Leap 4YourLife, she chose to shoot at herfamily house, her neighbourshouses, and the KayMeekCentre.

WestVancouvers stagehas played many parts overthe last decade, serving ashost to political debates, musical performances, and countless theatreproductions.

Many of those momentswill be commemorated Nov.6.

Therell be lots ofmemories and celebration, remarks the centresexecutive director Jeanne

    LeSage.The theatre is unique in

    MetroVancouver, accordingto LeSage.

If you think about otherplayers in town:Arts Club,PuSh festival, these werestarted by artistic directors, she says. But this is verymuch an organization startedby a committed group of

community members whowere passionate aboutbringing very, very strongprofessional work toWestVan.

Hired inMarch, LeSageis well-aware of the theatreshistory and its place in thecommunity.

For me, I feel like Imthe caretaker of this beautiful

vision, she says. The 498-seat venue is the

realization of philanthropistKayMeeks vision.Meekchampioned a theatre thatwould include an educationalcomponent for youngpeople. After her initial $1million donation, theWestVancouver school districtproposed the site adjacent to

WestVancouver secondaryfor the arts centre.Meekreached deep into her pocketagain during the buildingsconstruction.

Meek died on Nov. 6,2004 at the age of 98.

The centre hosted its rstpublic performance the sameday.

    LeSages route from

the University ofTorontosdrama program to theinner workings of theWestVancouver theatre was a longone. However, her decisionto go from the stage tobackstage was quick.

Were not all made to beperformers, she says.

The narrative unspoolswith the help of a videodiary Christine has beensecretly keeping. Shesvaguely aware that the twomen in her life may nothave her best interests atheart, and each day she getscloser to understanding thesource of her amnesia, ahorric and as-yet-unsolvedattack years earlier that lefther naked and bleeding.

Revelations of sortsarrive after Christineventures out to see anold friend (Anne-MarieDuff). Its a rare escapefrom the claustrophobicconnes of Christinesworld. Her spartan houseis about as antiseptic as ahome can get; productiondesigner Kave Quinnkeeps Christines worldsterile with greys and dullearth tones, a relativelyanonymous house in thegeneric London suburbs.

Of course, its alsopossible that Christine ismerely paranoid. Is it aconspiracy plot, or a portraitof a woman unraveling?Unfortunately, theres morethan one plot hole to becircumvented before wearrive at the answer.

Kidman has had practiceplaying characters sufferinga break with reality.Theactor has played a womanliving with her ghostchildren (The Others), amasochistic prison bride(The Paperboy), a neuroticice-queen (Margot at theWedding), a victim of rapeand xenophobia (Dogville),the grieving mother of adead child (Rabbit Hole),and a widow confronted bya 10-year-old who claims tobe her reincarnated husband(Birth). This is the secondlm this year to pair Kidmanwith Firth (The RailwayMan).

Amnesia dramas arenothing new 50 FirstDates andMemento springrst to mind and BeforeI GoTo Sleep does little todistinguish itself.Anchoredby a strong cast the lmemerges as a satisfyingenough thriller, albeit oneas quickly forgotten asChristines daily to-do list.

SUVs long, low stylemakes it standoutcoupe and compact SUV.

The most obviousdifference between the X4and the X3 is its slopingrooine, accented bysharp creases. This givesthe X4 its own distinctivecharacter.

Also, while the X4 usesthe X3s architecture, it islonger and lower thisfollows the recipe thatBMW is using with the new4 Series, which is carvedout of the 3 Series.

The styling of the X4is the most controversialaspect of this new vehicle.

Those not on board shouldknow it follows a verysuccessful formula BMWhas used with the larger X6,and no one can deny thefact that the X4 stands outin the crowd.

The cabin of the X4is remarkably similar tothe X3, which means ithas a stylish, somewhatconservative design itwould have been nice if thisnew car received an all-newinterior.

    PerformanceMuch less controversial

are the X4s lineup ofengines, because the X4shares its engine lineupwith others in the BMWrange, including the 3Series sedan, 4 Series andX3.

Base model X4s, thexDrive28i, comes with a2.0-litre turbocharged inlinefour-cylinder. It produces240 horsepower and 258foot-pounds of torque. This engine is superb, withplenty of pulling power anda surprising amount of get-up-and-go.

Stepping up to thexDrive35i increases bothhorsepower and torque

to an even 300 each.Thiscomes from a 3.0-litreturbocharged straight-sixthat is second to none inthe industry. Smooth andgutsy, the 3.0-litre is oneof the best engines in theworld in terms of overallfeel and balance of powervs. economy.

BMWs xDrive AWDsystem comes standard, obviously, along with aneight-speed automatictransmission. There areno other drivetrain ortransmission optionsavailable at this time.

BMW has made itsname by building driverscars. Its SUVs, whilesportier than many of itsrivals, are understandablynever as spirited as theircars. But the 2015 X4, stillusing X3 underpinnings, drives much more like aBMW car. It has the bestelectric power steering unitBMW has made yet.

The lower ride heightand retuned suspensiongive the X4 a differentpersonality than the X3,though not as much as youthink. It is a joy to drive ona twisty road and has fourdriving modes: Sport+,Sport, Comfort and EcoPro allowing you tocustomize your drivingexperience.

To make the X4 asfuel efcient as possible,it comes with BMWEfcientDynamics, whichincludes auto start/stop,low rolling-resistance tires,brake-energy regenerationand a coasting function. This works in conjunctionwith the Eco Pro drivingmode which changes theX4s throttle responseand gear shifts to furthereconomy.

    EnvironmentWhile the cabin of

the X4 mostly resemblesthe X3, BMW has givenit a few unique featuresto make it feel exclusive. The front passengers sit20 millimetres lower andthe rear bench has a morepronounced two-seatappearance to accentuatethe look of the exterior.

The X4 can seat vepassengers, howeveronly four will be trulycomfortable. The rearcentre seat is really justa perch. The two outerseats dont have a lot ofheadroom because of thesloping roof, but anyoneunder six-feet should bene.

The most concerningaspect for rear passengerswould be the oor height.

Knee-room is quite good, but because the seatswere lowered to provideadequate headroom, passengers may feel liketheir knees are a bit high.

As can be expected, theX4 has less cargo spacethan an X3. However, the rear seats are split40/20/40 to make the spaceas versatile as possible.Accessing that space hasbeen made easier thanks tothe Smart Opener systemwhich opens the tailgate bywaving your foot under therear bumper.

The X4 comes with agood amount of standardtechnology features, including BMWs iDrivewith a 6.5-inch controldisplay. This system canbe upgraded to accessthe Internet and haveone of the best navigationsystems on the market withAdvanced RealTimeTrafcInformation.

It is also availablewith many comfortingsafety options.Theseinclude Active Blind SpotDetection and a LaneDeparture and CollisionWarning system that givesa gentle vibration of thesteering wheel to get yourattention.

    FeaturesThe 2015 X4 has a

    starting price of $46,300.Standard equipment

includes heated front seats, electric seats with drivermemory, leather multi-function steering wheel, heated steering wheel, automatic climate control, dynamic cruise control, runat tires and a sunroof.

Additional features, available as options oron higher trims, includeheated rear seats, surroundview, rearview camera, parking sensors, adaptiveheadlights, head-up display, dynamic damper control, and an M Sport Package.

    Fuel efciency numbers(litres/100 kilometres) forthe xDrive28i are 11.8city, 8.4 highway and 10.3combined.The xDrive35ireturns 12.5 city, 8.7highway for 10.8 combined.

Thumbs upThe X4 provides a nice

combination of sportscoupe design with theversatility of a crossover. The X4 has one of the beststeering feels in its class.

    Thumbs downThe X4s styling is

polarizing and its coupe-like proportions limitpracticality. Rear visibility isquite poor.
