The customers may be getting smaller but more and more of them are turning to Simply Activ.

Business is booming for the Whitley Bay based salon; just six months after first opening its doors, the number of regular customers is well ahead of target and they are all shedding pounds and losing inches.

Owner, Maria Hancock said; “Eighteen month ago I was told I needed to exercise for health reasons but I can’t swim, found walking lonely and hated the thought of going to the gym! Then I remembered the toning beds that used to be popular but found none close to home.

I had just been made redundant so I contacted Shapemaster, the manufacturer and asked for permission to open my own centre. A year in the planning and my partner Colin’s pension spent, we opened Simply Activ at the end of June 2015.”

At Simply Activ nine power assisted machines offer a full body workout for anyone that wouldn’t attend the gym. The machines take the effort out of the exercise so most people, whatever age or condition, can use the machines.

The glittering 2015 awards ceremony took place on Tuesday 1 December at the Village Hotel and was attended by 200 leading figures from the region’s business community.

The annual awards provide an opportunity to celebrate the massive contribution that businesses in the area, both large and small, make to the success of the borough and the local economy.

This year’s event saw Killingworth based Multi-Packaging Solutions, which employs over 320 people, take the coveted North Tyneside Business of the Year Award, having already been crowned winners in the Innovation Award category.

Multi Packaging Solutions (MPS) have been operating in the region since 1926 and have been on their Killingworth site for 51 years. The company was chosen as North Tyneside Business of the Year because the judges believe it truly demonstrates the originality and enterprising spirit that makes North Tyneside what it is. The company, one of the region’s biggest employers, is a full service print and packaging supplier with state-of-the-art prepress, press, and finishing technologies; it has recently been rolling out programmes to global businesses such as Mondelez, Nestle and P & G.

Linda Nelson, Finance & Commercial Director of Multi Packaging Solutions Killingworth site, said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded the North Tyneside Business of the Year award, and of course the Innovation Award which was for the tremendous work done by Customer Services and Purchasing on streamlining our Supply Chain. They are an absolute credit to our employees and reflect their skill, dedication and loyalty.

“The awards also show the progress we’ve made as the business where people come to learn and reinforce our position as a key supplier of innovative packaging solutions. They clearly demonstrate the consistently high standards we strive to offer all our customers.”

This year also saw the second presentation of the Special Contribution Award, given to the business which has made the biggest contribution to the life, economy and reputation of North Tyneside. The 2015 winner was Accenture who have recently expanded into a second office on Cobalt Park, the UK’s largest office park, and employ over 700 of the park’s workforce.

Accenture is a leading global professional services company providing a broad range of services and solutions in strategy, consulting, digital, technology and operations. The company has made 12 consecutive appearances on FORTUNE’s “World’s Most Admired Companies” list.

Conquering the stress of speaking

Free business training

Engineering for the future

”People who talk about what life has taught them will never fail to hold an audience” Dale Carnegie

VODA’s Sector Connector project is offering free, two-hour workshops to help local community groups and businesses learn more about a range of business subjects.

“When writing your speech, start by knowing exactly what message is to be delivered then treat it like a story with a bold introduction, an informative message and a strong conclusion. I recommend kicking off with a quote or a question to engage your audience or make them think and include personal experiences because people like to hear success stories. It’s also a good idea to pre-prepare answers to awkward questions.

“All in all keep it NICE: Neat, Interesting, Concise, Exciting. That appropriate for the audience with no long words or complicated phrases.

“You should get in as much practice as you can ahead of time and, when it comes to the presentation itself it helps to know your stage, where the microphone is and how to access your visual aids. If you are nervous try some relaxation exercises, deep breaths, stretching, or listening to music and remember to smile.

“My final piece of advice is, where ever possible use the power of three. It hammers home the message. “I came, I saw, I conquered”. (Julius Caesar). “Education, Education, Education” (Tony Blair). “Tell it, Sell it and Win it” (Speech Genius).

“All this has worked for me and others I coach. I am sure it will work for you.”

NORTH TYNESIDE BUSINESS FORUM NEWSLETTER p6

Speaking in public is something many of us worry about but most of us have to do, so we have asked Michael Rickwood from Speech Genius to give us the benefit of his experience. With the Carnegie quote in mind here is Michael’s advice on public speaking and how to present your business.

The North Tyneside Learning Trust has joined forces with the North Tyneside Manufacturers’ Forum to open up the world of engineering to schools and colleges. This unique partnership was launched in November at an event held at SMD on Wallsend riverside.

The two organisations share an ambition to enthuse and encourage young people to consider a future in manufacturing, which can offer fantastic opportunities for career development, travel and earning potential.

The partnership will arrange a schedule of site visits to manufacturing premises, inviting industrialists and education staff to experience the range of manufacturers operating in the area, and the type of skills and qualifications needed to meet anticipated sector needs. The partnership will also endeavor to link school and college students with businesses through increased work placements and involvement in curriculum enrichment programmes, such as Primary Engineer, Go4Set, Education Engineering Scheme etc.

The programme of workshops will take place at the VODA offices and launches on 21 January 2016 with Streaming your Systems presented by MCS Training. Subsequent topics will include website development, better design and print, building a brand and recruitment matters. To book a place or find out more, contact Ian Dougall at VODA on 0191 6432638 or email [email protected]
