Laptops for Learning The Federal Government has provided funding through the Digital Education Revolution to provide all students with a laptop. The Commonwealth and NSW Governments have agreed to work together to provide a wirelessly enabled specialist educational laptop to every student in Years 9 to 12 in NSW public schools by June 2012. The laptop will be allocated to the students for use while they are enrolled in a public school. At the end of Year 12, students exiting school, will take the device with them. It is envisaged that students will take the laptop home and recharge the battery each night. They will have the ability to connect up to their home internet connection with a relaxed filtering environment.

Mendooran Central School has taken delivery of eight Lenovo laptops which we are now able to pass on to our Year 9 students at a Parent/Student Information night. This will take place tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday 24th November at 5.30pm in the Library. There are some rules which apply to ownership of these laptops and we would like the opportunity to explain them in person. An information booklet will accompany the laptop. If you or your child are not able to attend this information night, they will not be able to receive their laptop with the rest of the class cohort. Intensive Swimming Intensive Swimming for Primary and Secondary students has begun today. Although we have received some relief from the hot weather today, I ask that parents ensure that all children are supplied with appropriate protection from the sun. A huge thankyou to the parents who have volunteered to help out with Intensive Swimming - your assistance is greatly appreciated. Appropriate use of Technology A reminder to students, that the sending of emails or SMS messages containing threats or inappropriate language is illegal. Electronic media can be used as a form of bullying and it should not be tolerated. Comments made on chat lines etc can be very hurtful and can easily escalate into major issues between students which can then carry over from home to school. Webservices for this reason prevent students from accessing such sites at school. The school can track emails that are sent to or being sent by students, thus reducing the likelihood of this happening at school. It is important for your own child’s protection that you monitor what they are doing on the internet . Congratulations Our congratulations go to Mrs Althofer for progressing through to the State Finalist for the “Inspirational Teacher Award” announced last week. Mrs Althofer was nominated earlier this year by members of the school community for the dedication to her work and excellent standards she has set over many years at Mendooran Central School. We congratulate Mrs Althofer for being selected at such a high level in this prestigious competition. Michael Spora (Principal)

KINDERGARTEN/YEAR 1 NEWS Kindergarten/Year 1 students are looking at all things imaginary in literacy. Last week we read the book “Where the Wild Things Are” which is about the main character, Max, using his imagination to travel to the land of the Wild Things and become King. This week we will continue discussions on this text, looking at sequencing the events of the story and thinking about what it might be like to be King/ Queen.

Intensive swimming starts this week. Students need to remember to bring swimmers, towel and a hat every day. Please provide a piece of fruit as we will have a fruit break to keep up our energy levels. S Reynolds

YEAR 1/2 NEWS In English we have been deconstructing simple models of narratives and jointly constructing class and independent narratives. Some of our complications (problems) and resolutions are well thought out and very interesting! In Maths we have been identifying corners as angles. Students enjoyed using the corner of a rectangle to find other corners of the same size in the classroom. We also made shapes on geoboards which we transferred onto dot paper. Kevin made a clever shape with 20 sides and 20 angles! In our COGs unit we compared the differences between the way students in Japan live compared to us e.g students in Japan have to clean their school windows and toilets while we are lucky to have cleaners to clean our school. In Art we designed a picture using overlapping shapes. Sophie had lots of angles in her design. Intensive swimming starts today and will continue for two weeks. All students need to remember to bring their swimmers, hat, towel and sunscreen. K, 1 and 2 will have an early morning tea at approximately 10am, then get changed at school at 10:10am and walk to the pool at 10:30am. Our lessons commence at 10:45am and finish at 11:30am. We will get changed back into our clothes at the pool then return to school by 11:45am. L Peter

YEAR 3/4 NEWS Badly timed but fun anyway, we finally had our walk around the town looking at “Places of Cultural Significance” in Mendooran. Mrs Ned accompanied me with the children, and of course we had to buy paddle-pops and have a short break in the shade at the park. Many thanks to the Aschers at CRT for the bag of chips given to each child as an extra treat! Our projects on the five major religions are progressing well and the children have enjoyed learning about some of the Aboriginal Dreaming Stories. Before we had all that fun, we had to complete some more serious assessment tasks – this time they were Maths tests and most of the children performed quite well. We have begun working on some Christmas activities based on either Maths or Spelling or Grammar or Vocabulary type concepts, so while they are fun, they are also valuable learning experiences. G Davis

TRANSITION NEWS Last week children arrived at school on Wednesday morning at 9.00am to spend a morning session in Kindergarten. Children lined up at assembly and forwarded into class. We made a pasta necklace, read a book about a big red bus and participated in a range of activities.

This week Transition to Kindergarten will be held on Wednesday afternoon from 1.30pm – 2.45pm

in the Kindergarten room. S Reynolds

PERTUSSIS (WHOOPING COUGH) OUTBREAK Pertussis has once again reared it’s ugly head in Mendooran. If your child is coughing or displaying any symptoms of pertussis please keep them at home and see a doctor. A letter and information sheet has been sent home today. Please make sure you read the information, it lists the symptoms, treatment and preventative measures that may be taken. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

INTENSIVE SWIMMING - PARENT HELPERS NEEDED We are desperately asking for volunteers to help run a group. All lesson notes are provided and we hope to have 2 helpers on each group. Please contact the school office if you are able to help. Sessions run from 10.45am -12.30pm each day. Each day for swimming lessons, students MUST bring swimmers, towel, plastic bag for wet clothes, sunscreen and a hat. Students will be walking to the pool so they MUST have a hat or they will have to remain at school.

SECONDARY NEWS

SECONDARY GENERAL Our Year 6 to 7 Transition begins next week with Year 6 students joining in the secondary curriculum with lessons being delivered by our secondary staff to help our Year 6 students better understand and assimilate into the secondary school. Transition into Secondary School is a very important process and one that our secondary teachers take very seriously. If there are any Year 6 Parents/Carers who would like to know more about the program, please do not hesitate to contact me. Today our annual examinations are concluding, with Years 7-9 completing their yearly examinations. Year 10 also completed their School Certificate examinations last week. Many thanks again to Mrs Jenny Luckie and Mrs Kim Skinner for their professional support for our students! Students will continue with normal lessons focussed on skills necessary for their further education. Annual school reports are currently being written by staff and parents can expect to receive them later this term. Our senior student’s have completed their First Aid Certificates last week and some are completing their second week (for this year) of work experience. Other senior students have volunteered to help with the Intensive Swimming Program for our Infants and Primary students. This is a valuable opportunity for our senior students to share their skills and also to support school staff in implementing a program I feel is vital. I would strongly encourage any secondary students who have not indicated their inclusion in the Intensive Swimming Program to join as soon as possible! This week also sees the annual CWA/Land Cookery Competition to be held this Wednesday. Junior students will be required to cook Jam Drops and those over 12 years will be cooking Banana Cakes. Planning is well under way for the 2010 Year 11 Curriculum. Some of the prospective students took part in an orientation VC with Access staff, which was educational, enjoyable and entertaining. The technology looks great and the benefit is that our MCS students will be working closely with our own staff in addition to Access staff in each lesson. J Waters

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST - ADULT ART CLASS 2010 If any community members are interested in joining this popular Art class in 2010 please contact Mrs Beth McGirr or leave a message at the school office. B McGirr

SWIMSAFE CLASSES STARTING SOON Australian summers usually involve plenty of fun in and around water. But no parent can forget how important it is to make sure children stay safe. Swimsafe classes for preschoolers and school-aged children help youngsters learn important ways to be safe and enjoy our pools, rivers, beaches and lakes. The intensive nine day programs give wonderful results, and are great fun as well!! Plus, family discounts make Swimsafe affordable for all children in the family. Sport and Recreation run Swimsafe classes in pools all over the State, including somewhere near you. Swimsafe has been going for more than 30 years, with more than 15,000 people attending classes each year. Swimsafe instructors are nationally qualified and screened for their suitability to work with children. Prices for nine lessons are $57.30 for school-aged children and $43 for preschoolers (Prices exclude pool entry fee).

EXCHANGE STUDENTS IN NEED OF VOLUNTEER HOST FAMILIES Have you ever considered introducing your own children to an older international sibling?

World Education Program is looking for Volunteer Host Families for International Students arriving in July 2010. Take some time over the Christmas break to read through some letters and view photos of our students looking for families. Successful applicants can start corresponding with their students immediately!

Our Big Brothers and Big Sisters from France, Switzerland, Netherlands, Brazil, Italy, and Belgium are keen to start corresponding with a family they can call their own and learn about the place they will call home.

"The experience of hosting a student through WEP has been a thoroughly positive one, enabling our family to experience a different culture and to highlight our own. We have expanded our family by one and this will be an enduring relationship. Our three young children refer to our exchange student as their sister, which to us highlights how integral a member she is in our family. To anyone considering hosting we would recommend opening your home, your minds and your hearts. It can only bring rewards for all concerned." - Linda and Ben - host parents of Fanny from France If you would like more information on becoming a Host Family, please contact:
