Northbrook Woman’s Club Mary Beth Smith, President January 2016 Sandy Veith, Editor
HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed some special times with your friends and family. My December was enhanced by several NWC events. We started the month with an amazing luncheon and holiday boutique. Many thanks go out to Nancy Carey and Linda Barrett for organizing the luncheon plans with the club, Susan Schueler for coordinating everything with GBN Express (who did an amazing job!), and to Linda Redstone and her team for an outstanding Holiday Boutique. Also thanks to Missy Reedy and our generous members, we collected a record $1,855 in gift cards and donations for the YWCA Evanston/North Shore. What a great start to the holiday season!
Diane Murphy and her committee continued the season of giving by donating time to "Dec the Doors" at The Grove of Northbrook. The residents really appreciated our efforts to bring some cheer to the halls of their facility. We enjoyed a fun evening of "Mixology" and cocktail making at Katie Lane’s home on December 9th. We all developed a bit stronger triceps shaking those cocktails! And who knew that smoked salt could taste so good in a cocktail! The last NWC highlight for the month came the next day when I went to the post office to check the P.O. Box for mail. NWCF received corporate donations totaling $1,000 – one check for $500 from a corporate matching donation initiated by one of our members, and a $500 award for volunteer service hours from one of our members for the other. I'd like to thank our members for pursuing these opportunities with their employers. I'd also like to encourage other members to pursue these efforts as well. Corporations are willing to support our efforts in the community, sometimes we just need to ask! We have many fun activities to look forward to in the month of January. Our Members Only Brunch will be held at Kathy Patelski's home on January 21. This is always a wonderful opportunity to socialize and get to know your fellow members. May I suggest (as a follow up to the survey) that you introduce yourself to a member that you do not know? You never know the connections you can make! On January 26th we can try a free exercise class at 9 Round Fitness. This may be just what we need to work off a few of the pounds that we put on over the holidays! And then we can learn how to put a few pounds back on at the luncheon and cooking demonstration at Saranello's on January 30th. Always something fun to do with NWC! Looking forward to another great year! Sincerely, Mary Beth Smith

Concerns: • Anni Goldberg had hip replacement surgery and is recovering at home. Helping Hands is
providing some meals while she’s unable to get around. We are sending healing thoughts your way, Anni!
• Lucille Griffin’s husband was in a motorcycle accident. We hope the recovery process goes smoothly.
• Condolences to Mary Szostak and her family on the unexpected passing of her mother, Grace Milota (fondly known as Gigi). She was from Palatine, a mother of four, and grandmother of nine! As a tech savvy 80-year-old, she kept in touch via FB and Twitter with many friends! A celebration of her life was held on December 22nd at Maryville Academy Chapel in Des Plaines. We are thinking of you all and sending prayers.
• We are also thinking of Julie Leonard and her family as her father, Charlie Hunter, passed away on December 6th. Julie grew up in Northbrook and the family lived on Walters.
