The adventure got started at theHilton Beach Community Hall, where we stopped to receive our mapof the sales from the three lovely, de-lightful greeters. And while we werethere, we were able to hit 7 saleswithout even moving the car. Per-haps the star of the show was theLions Fundraising Sale, right in theCommunity Hall which truly musthave had “something for everyone”.

We hate to brag, but the Foxes scored bargain afterbargain at almost every stop along the way, gleefullyfilling our car with loot, booty, treasure and swag, which we will surely be able to put to use.

Kudos to the organizers. We’re pretty sure that this‘1st Annual’ community event will be followed bymany, many more. What a great idea …. and a greatday!

St. Joseph IslandMuseum MomentDID ANYONE NOTICE TEA DAY now has the name Her-itage in it? Don’t worry we will still have all of the greatthings that we normally have on Tea Day, the live entertain-ment, refreshments, guest speakers and of course delicioushomemade pie! We have decided that since we focus on Is-land heritage, it was time to acknowledge that in our eventtitle. Each year we choose an organization that has con-tributed to making this such a special place to live. This yearwe have decided to recognize the efforts of the HorticulturalSociety.

This is the first of two parts. Did you know there are 282Horticultural Societies in Ontario, working on projects tokeep this province beautiful? These organizations are strictlymade up of volunteers whose mission is to promote educa-tion and interest in all areas of horticulture.

The Ontario Horticultural Society officially began as an or-ganization in 1906, and now boasts over 30 000 memberswho have a passion for gardening.

Here are some interesting tidbits that I have gleaned frommy research on our Island Horticultural Society. Thank youto Maria Smith for allowing me access to records, notes, pho-tos etc.

According to their official minutes book the first meetingwas held March 12, 1974 to explore the possibility of form-ing a Horticultural Society here on St. Joseph Island. Ap-proximately 75 interested people were in attendance with 21potential members.

March 25, 1974 a president was elected, Dr. J.A. Nattress, andthey had a membership roster of 41 people. However, aftertheir April meeting they had 45 “paid up” members. Thatsame meeting they decided to hold a flower show, and onAugust 15 and 16, 1974 the group held their first annualFlower and Vegetable Show.

The official flower of the St. Joseph Island Horticultural So-ciety is the aster. The group decided in 1980 that they wouldadd memorial tree plantings to their duties as members. In2000 the society built a large raised bed opposite Kent’s Cor-ners to greet people as they arrived on the island. This wastheir millennium project.

Stay Safe on the WaterJULY 4TH – 12TH MARKS NATIONAL FISHING WEEKin Canada. The Canadian Safe Boating Council (CSBC) andthe Ontario Conservation Officers Association (OCOA) wantto remind anglers that wearing your lifejacket is even moreimportant than wearing your ‘lucky fishing hat’. But they doshare one trait. They both have to be worn to be effective!

According to the Canadian Safe Boating Council and theLifesaving Society, 80 percent of recreational boaters whodrown each and every year in Canada were not wearing a life-jacket or Personal Floatation Device (PFD). Most of thesedrownings occur in small, open power boats, accounting for60 percent of these preventable deaths. A majority of thesevictims were males between the ages of 19 and 35, out for aday of fishing.

Many of those who don’t wear their lifejackets or PFDs be-lieve that, since they are good swimmers, having them on-board and within easy reach is good enough. But a lifejacketstored under a seat or up in the bow will be of no help whenthe unexpected happens, like falling overboard while tryingto net the catch.

Many of today’s anglers are delighted with the models thatare designed especially to suit their needs. They’re rugged, allow for full freedom of movement to cast and are con-structed with lots of pockets for gear. Some even comeequipped with an attachment from which to hang a landingnet. When choosing their lifejacket, anglers should also checkthe label to make sure it is Transport Canada approved, is thecorrect size and fits snugly.

Fishing is a part of our Canadian fabric and an activity that’seasy to get hooked on. At this important time of year, theCSBC and OCOA are asking those who fish to ‘Get Hookedon Lifejackets’ too.

This initiative is made possible through support of TransportCanada’s Office of Boating Safety.

For more information about natural resources regulationsand enforcement, please visit the OCOA website atwww.ocoa.ca, or contact your local Conservation Officer.

Canada’s Second Wonderlandor “Ray’s Rant”

LIVING HERE IN NORTHERN ONTARIO, many youngfamilies have to travel far to experience a vacation which, attimes, depending on their destination and length of stay, canbe very expensive. I have a suggestion for young families inour area to save money and time, while still experiencing the“roller coaster ride” of, let’s say, Canada’s Wonderland.

Simply bring your young ones along for a ride in your vehicleon Highway 548 here on St. Joe’s Island, between HiltonBeach and Hamilton Bay Road, and experience the simula-tion of a roller coaster ride with all the twists, bumps, suddenthrusts, etc. that only an expensive roller coaster ride can pro-vide. Just think … it’s cheap and close and you could actuallymake a flavoured milkshake, all at the same time. Be sure tobring some plastic bags just in case the young ones feel ill.

We here living along the W Line like to call this section, andI’m sure there are other sections that could apply here ….“THE HIGHWAY FROM HELL.” Well I guess it’s just an-other highway maintained by our caring province so be sureto send our provincial representative a letter of thanks for theexperience.

Just a thought from a resident living the experience, minussome funds for new shocks and springs. “I’m all shock upboohoho.”

R. Kennedy, W Line Resident
