From the Principal Welcome Back

A very warm welcome to all members of our school community and particularly to our new students and families. Students have settled into the new school year and are looking forward to the 2020 year at Manly.

The Year 7 Orientation program, coordinated by Ms Carolan, has provided an opportunity for students to get to know each other, meet their teachers and make sure they can easily find their way around the school. Underlying the whole week was the key idea that high school is accessible, fun and rewarding.

Opportunities to grow, make lifelong friends, to participate and to be personally challenged are central to our educational philosophy.

Thank you to our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders who gave up the last day of their holidays to assist Year 7 students as they participated in activities to get to know our school. Thank you also to our School Orientation Guides who are helping new students in Years 8 – 11 as they settle in.

Staffing Changes

At the end of last year, Ms Cath Whalan announced that she will on leave for Term 1 2020. I will be relieving Principal in her absence. Relieving in my Deputy Principal position is Ms Marisa Carolan for Year 7, 9 and 11, with Ms Kate Munro relieving as Head Teacher English. Ms Fiona Brien and Ms Rebecca Stuart will be sharing the role of Head Teacher Secondary Studies.

We warmly welcome the following new staff to the NBSC Manly community; Ms Skye Campbell to the English faculty, Ms Jamie Wan to Science (Term 1), Mr Michael Malone to Mathematics faculty (Term 1 and 2) and Mr James Shirlaw to TAS. We are confident they will enjoy being a part of such a wonderful school and are encouraged to become involved in the variety of school activities throughout the year.

I am also very pleased to announce that we have additional counselling support this year and welcome Ms Moss to our team of counsellors at Manly Campus.

Novel Coronavirus

Advice received on 30 January from the Australian Government Department of Health for parents and staff in relation to the Novel Coronavirus is:

• people who have been in contact with any confirmed Novel Coronavirus cases must be isolated in their home for 14 days following exposure

• returned travellers who have been in Hubei Province of China must be isolated in their home for 14 days after leaving Hubei Province, other than for seeking individual medical care.

Students and staff currently excluded from school are those who:

• over the last 14 days have visited the province of Hubei in central China. They should not return to school or child care services for a period of 14 days after leaving China, as the coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks or

• are under medical assessment or

• have been diagnosed with the Novel Coronavirus or

• have had close contact with a confirmed case of the Novel Coronavirus. The Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia.

In addition, The NSW Ministry of Health and NSW Department of Education have recommended that:

• any student or staff member who was in China, including Hong Kong but excluding the province of Hubei over the past 14 days is recommended not attend school or child care services for a period of 14 days after leaving, as the Novel Coronavirus’ incubation period can be as long as two weeks.

Students who returned to Australia more than 14 days ago and have shown no symptoms are able to return to school this week.

There has been a small number of cases of confirmed Novel Coronavirus in New South Wales. The Ministry of Health has processes in place to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the Ministry of Health.

Consistent with current guidelines, staff and students who are unwell with respiratory illness should remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with our current practice if any child becomes unwell, we will implement our infection control guidelines and follow the advice provided by the Ministry of Health as appropriate.

Information Evenings

The Information Evenings for parents and students in Year 7 to 11 will be held over the next three weeks, beginning with Year 10 next Wednesday and Year 7 on Thursday. All students and parents are encouraged to attend the relevant evening to learn more about specific programs that occur throughout the year and the assessment procedures for students. Following the Year 7 Information Evening, Year 7 band parents will be given further information about how the band program operates for all relevant ensembles.

Communication

This newsletter is a vital form of communication used to celebrate success, provide information and give notice of upcoming events for students and parents. The email distribution list is drawn from information supplied to the school – if there has been a change of address or a new email address, please advise the school by email to [email protected] . The Weekly Pines will be sent out at the end of the first week of each term and then fortnightly in weeks 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10.

Open communication is valued and encouraged at all times, with Year Advisers the first point of contact for matters relating to specific students. We welcome Ms Lucienne Herft (Year 7) joining the Wellbeing Team: Ms Josinta Chandra (Year 8), Mr Branko Goykovic (Year 9,) Mr Richard Crooks (Year 10), Ms Chau Truong (Year 11) and Ms Fiona Brien (Year 12).

Our two deputies, Ms Carolan (relieving) and Mr Newcomb have overarching responsibility for Year 7, 9, 11 and Year 8, 10, 12 respectively. Our school counsellors, Ms Deborah Campbell- Allen and Ms Melissa Moss are also available to provide additional support for our students when required, as is Mr David Martin, Senior Psychologist - Education, who is based at Manly Campus. The office staff are available to help new students sort out transport, finance and paperwork issues, while other students and staff are always willing to assist when required.

Uniform

The beginning of the school year is the best time to ensure that all students have appropriate uniform. The year has begun very well for nearly all students and random uniform checks will begin next week. Shoes should be black enclosed leather or vinyl (NOT canvas or sports style), with the exception on Wednesdays. School shorts or pants should be grey (except on Wednesdays when sports uniform can be worn by students in Year 7-10).

Thank you in anticipation of your assistance in ensuring our students show their respect for our school through wearing the correct school uniform.

Offbeat NBSC Offbeat NBSC is a College based music program that specialises in learning how to improvise, from beginner to advanced. It is suitable for players (any instrument, any school) who want to develop their own voice in music, play/compose their own music, and want to understand how music works. We do this in small bands under the tutelage of Australian composer/improvisor Colin Bright. If you want to go beyond what you already know, then this program is for you.

Anyone can join. Any level. No auditions. Come and try it. Bring your instrument.

First Rehearsal - 3.45-5pm Friday 7 February (You can come any Friday), @ Freshwater Senior Campus Theatre. Contact: Colin Bright 0419 208 974 [email protected]

They are a great way to learn how parents and carers can help their child develop the skills to be safer online. It is a great way to encourage your parent community to start the school year on the front foot with technology.

All sessions will be delivered by the Commission's eSafety expert, Greg Gebhart.
