The Cutest Little Wine Purse I wait until the end of each magazine production cycle before sitting

down to write my editor’s note. That way, cool ideas and themes have time to per-

colate through the hubbub of my brain. When I find myself telling my friends and family about

particular things, I know they are keepers. I’ve been babbling a bunch lately, so … here are some

highlights. Children’s entryway lockers that look like old-fashioned closets—outfitted with chalk-

boards on the door that invite self-expression. A reading nook made out of a hollow tree in the

Darntons’ house. The Darntons’ MSU-themed indoor basketball court. And well, who could forget

Scottie Lansill’s great-great-grandfather (read “The Bucket List House,” page 20, to find out what I

mean by that!)?

While the lockers might indeed make the difference between dysfunction and function in a

family (and wouldn’t be too difficult to replicate), most of us will never have an indoor basketball

court or an ancestor who turns out to be a fairy godfather. Our Northern Style spread hits a more

practical note—though no less dreamy. Let’s just say everyone on the staff all but ate it up, literally

in the case of the handmade raspberry truffles from Chocolate Exotica in Traverse City. The little

red table with the French poem stenciled on it, courtesy of Acanthus Hardware in Traverse City,

basked in the oohs and aahs it elicited during our photo shoot.

And then there was the hot little gold lamé wine purse from Cutler’s in Petoskey. It was sitting

on my desk the day after the photo shoot, December 19th, which happens to be my daughter’s

birthday. Which of course is in the middle of the crazy pre-holiday rush. Exhausted over trying to

think of something special for her, I fell into my office chair, closed my eyes and reopened them

with the wine purse in my sights. One call to Cutler’s and it was on my credit card. Needless to say,

if you see a darling 20-something partying around Traverse City with the cutest little wine purse

you ever saw, tell her you know where it came from. And not to worry, Cutler’s has more. Did I say

this issue is a lifesaver?

The

It took a young family to reveal the beauty in the old house.

Page 12: Northern Home & Cottage February/March 2014

The big, old white house at the top of the hill on Mitchell Street, a

couple blocks from downtown Petoskey, was a looker in its younger

years. Pocket doors, two staircases (one for the servants), divided light

windows from the Arts & Crafts era and hardwood floors tell that story. But as

the house aged, it withdrew from the neighborhood, becoming hidden behind a

tangle of huge trees. Inside, the once-grand living spaces were divided into three

rental units. Layers of linoleum covered much of the hardwood.

Craig Rose couldn’t say he’d ever noticed the house, even though he’d

grown up just blocks away—probably rode his bike past it many times as a kid. The

first time the house actually registered with him was when he and his wife, Edith,

toured it while searching for a house that would put their young family within walking

distance of Petoskey’s schools and amenity-filled downtown. After the Roses decided

to purchase the home, there were those who said keep the lot; tear the house down.

But Craig could see that besides location, location, location, the house had good

bones. “He had the vision,” Edith credits him.

And so, working with Woods and Water Construction, he and Edith plunged in

to a renovation that took them through layers of history—the home’s rental period

(there were three kitchens in the home when they purchased it), the home’s hand-

some beginnings in the early 20th century. Along the way the Roses searched for

Page 13: Northern Home & Cottage February/March 2014

Northern Home & Cottage FEB|MAR 2014 NHC11

The homeowners worked with Renee

Guthrie of Lake Street Design Studio

to pull together the contemporary

wall colors, wallpaper and upholstery

that energize the interior. The hand-

some new Arts & Crafts exterior pal-

ette befits the period home.

—Edith Rose

“He had the vision,” Edith credits him.

historic records of the home but found little: “We’ve tried

to find information from the historical society, but we still

don’t know very much about who lived here,” Craig says.

“All we’ve found is that we are only the fourth owners. ”

They may be anonymous, but those first home-

owners would be delighted by the Roses’ careful

renovation. They preserved what they could. And

where they couldn’t, Craig says: “Everywhere we had

an opportunity we tried to mimic what was in the

house.” They matched the old trim stain to a T. They

chose kitchen cabinets in a similar style, right down

to the old latches. They replicated the original Arts &

Crafts mullions in their new windows. They pulled up

linoleum and redid the floors.

The fireplace and mantel are original to the

home—though the Roses converted it to

gas to make it easier for the kids to cozy up

at homework time. Cutting a doorway to

the right of the fireplace opened up the floor

plan to better suit a modern family. Above:

One of three closet/lockers the Roses built

for their children in their new mudroom

addition. Like all the new structural changes

in the home, the lockers were designed to

blend in with the period home.

When they were finished preserving the home’s vintage character, the Roses

retrofitted their home to suit their modern family. A new mudroom is outfitted with

three personalized closets, one for each Rose child to stuff with coats, schoolbooks

and sports equipment. Kitchen designer Dawn Whyte helped them turn the old

servants kitchen into a kitchen fit for Edith, whom Craig describes as an “amazing

cook.” A custom circular banquette in the corner creates a perfect niche for the kids

to do homework and crafts. The living and dining room decor is contemporary and

unexpected—pieces like matching zebra-patterned chairs and vibrant red couches

in the living room—are fun foils to their stately backdrop.

The old dame wears the color and spirit of this young family with aplomb. “People tell me

that our house is charming,” Edith says. “I tell them, this home has acquired its charm over

the centuries. You can’t make charm.

Near the top of Scottie Lansill’s list of life goals was renovating a historic Harbor Springs home. Check.

Bucket ListTHE

HOUSE

Page 24: Northern Home & Cottage February/March 2014

L ike many people, Scottie Lansill has a bucket list of things she’d love to see and do in her

lifetime. And in the past couple of years, the Harbor Springs resident has ticked off sev-

eral of those list items, from hiring a personal trainer and enrolling in comedy classes, to

traveling to Poland and Italy, jumping from a plane, giving back to her community, taking riding

lessons with her horse, even signing on for an East Coast beauty pageant.

Lansill also has fulfilled her wish of buying a historic house and fixing it up. In July 2012, after

more than a year of renovations, Lansill’s 19th-century bluff house was finished, and she and her

partner, Joe, moved in.

“I love the history of these old houses,” says Lansill, whose 1,700-square-foot two-story over -

looks the village of Harbor Springs and Little Traverse Bay. She knew the area well, having spent

summers at her family’s waterfront cottage in the Wequetonsing neighborhood of Harbor Springs.

She’d also purchased another house in the area after relocating from California several years ago.

But it was an expected and storied inheritance from a distant relative that allowed Lansill to

make her bucket list items—including the home renovation dream—realities sooner rather than

later. In 2011, she was among 12 heirs of Saginaw lumber baron Wellington R. Burt to split over

$100 million of Burt's fortunes, 92 years after his death. Burt included an unusual clause in his will

that prevented family from accessing much of the estate until 21 years after his last grandchild died.

“I don’t ever take it for granted,” says Lansill, one of Burt’s great-great-grandchildren, of her

good fortune, which she says came after years of hard work, including a job with FedEx. “I know

what it’s like to struggle. I wake up every morning and thank God … I think it’s very interesting.

22 MyNorth.com

Scottie Lansill’s favorite colors—pink and green—pop

throughout her home, perfectly capturing Harbor

Springs’ resort spirit. Extensive landscaping on the

bluff site shaped the garden and patio space Scottie

dreamed of.

I love being part of history. I always worried it would change me, but I check in with my

friends and they tell me I haven’t.”

Lansill took the three-bedroom, three-bathroom West Bluff Drive house—a summer home

that had been owned by the same family for the past century—and created a year-round

residence that reflected its original intention, but with an updated look and feel.

Some things remain, such as the dining room chandelier and porch furniture that Lansill,

an abstract painter, simply refurbished to her own taste. The home’s upper level includes two

guest bedrooms and a tiled bathroom that Lansill barely touched because she liked the tra-

ditional look and old-school uniqueness, including a built-in magazine rack next to the toilet.

Still the renovations, overseen by general contractor Birchwood Construction, were intense

and included removing walls, constructing a kitchen where a bedroom had been, adding

a master bedroom off the kitchen and replacing windows, molding and trim and the roof.

The finished product takes full advantage of its storybook Harbor Springs setting. The

removal of a wall in the great room, for example, opened up the view through an attached

windowed front porch and onto sweeping views of the harbor below. “I wanted to see the

lake at all times,” Lansill says.

Prints courtesy of Casper, Scottie’s pet Pomeranian. “I’m a

huge dog lover and Harbor Springs is a dog lover’s town,”

Scottie says. The homeowner’s eclectic taste reflects her

buoyant personality.

Page 28: Northern Home & Cottage February/March 2014

26 MyNorth.com

With a flick of the switch, Scottie has the next best thing to an

artesian well springing from the rock walls that cascade down

the bluff to her patio. An elevated arc-shaped kitchen coun-

ter makes clever space for socializing in the small cottage.

Lansill incorporated her favorite colors of lime-green and pink throughout the home.

“It’s simple and fresh without being ostentatious,” she says. “It’s a cottage, not a mansion.” Even

so, touches including built-in bookshelves, a gas fireplace and cove lighting in the dining area

maintain a cozy, year-round living feel.

“I wanted it to look as Michigan as possible,” she says. “I just love it here. I love Michigan people,

I love Michigan weather. In Michigan, people say, ‘Do your own thing,’ and ‘Be your own person.’

Michigan—it’s in my heart and soul.” .

Heather Johnson Durocher writes about her beloved Michigan and all things running in

the Mitten State from Traverse City, where she lives with her husband and three children.

Home GrownTrees as furniture, a boulder for a mantel and a

Spartan basketball court off the rec room. The Darntons prove it’s fun to let your imagination roam.

The heavy, handcrafted pine front

door with its thick, Medieval-style

wrought-iron hinges is a striking

clue about the statement that Dick and Karen

Darnton’s home makes: rustic, unexpected, a

little magical. In all but the hottest season, a fire

licks and crackles from the cairnlike fireplace

that Dick designed and built from carefully

chosen boulders. The headstone, a behemoth

placed in lieu of a traditional mantel, is an

unusual hunk of limestone, tumbled smooth

as it was by glaciers eons ago. There’s a colos-

sal pudding stone in the fireplace facade, too,

as well as several boulders taken right off this

10 acres on a bluff above Little Traverse Bay,

outside of Harbor Springs.

The fascinations continue. Timbers sal -

vaged from the renovation of historic Holy

Childhood Church help hold up the home. The

beams had been hewn for over a century when

the Darntons brought them to the site. Add that

pedigree to the timbers’ hundreds of growth

rings, and you can imagine the pre-Columbian

story these trees might tell. The flooring in the

great room and kitchen is a random medley

of hardwood species that Dick culled from

building sites. A reading nook fashioned from

a hollowed, split log all but calls for you, a book

and a cup of coffee. The twig, sapling and wood

slab staircase (made from Upper Peninsula

deer camp trees) curls its way to the upstairs.

This page: Efficiency meets unex-

pected elegance in Karen’s pan-

try—outfitted with an old-fashioned

style tin ceiling and tucked between

the mudroom and the kitchen. The

home is filled with creative touches

like these hooks made from antique

spoons. Opposite: The rustic style is

enhanced by beveled edges on the

paneling that make it feel hand hewn.

“Whenever we walk in the woods we come back with ideas,” Karen says.

Literally.

“We have a big chainsaw mill that we take right in the woods with us,”

Dick says. If the couple finds a unique tree, they can make some lumber

on the spot.

What may read like a do-it-yourself Middle Earth fantasy is in reality an

ordered, thought-out plan that stems from this couple’s long experience in

the build and design world. Dick has been at the helm of Darnton Builders

for 30 years. Before she joined the family company several years ago, Karen

worked as a kitchen designer and in a home accessories boutique. It’s a yin

and yang partnership that culminates in homes with a wonderful balance

of creativity and function. Needless to say, when the Darntons went to build

this house, a home where they would raise their two sons (now in their 20s)

and entertain their large extended family, they knew what they wanted.

For Dick, the design had to be as practical as it was beautiful. For

example, he wanted a log home, but by building a hybrid (using half logs

applied to the exterior of a stick built frame) he ended up with same look for

less money and gained more insulation. And that fireplace? The firebox is a

Karen kept the kitchen sleek, opting for a

pantry instead of wall cupboards to keep the

view open. Harbor Springs’ artist Cynthia

Rutherford painted the French country–style

hood. Come inside the storybook-looking

home and find a reading nook made from

two halves of a hollowed tree and a staircase

Dick designed from timber and limbs that

caught his fancy on forest hikes.

high-efficiency Rumford design that puts out as much heat as a woodstove.

Karen’s wish list began with her walk-in pantry, wedged between the

kitchen and the door to the garage. The placement is perfect for an easy

grocery drop and just as perfect for storing china and serving dishes. Small

touches including a double-hung window that looks out into the forest,

a white-enameled tin ceiling, white beadboard walls and boxwood green

shelving bring rustic elegance to the small space.

Karen played out this unexpected luxury theme again in the master

bathroom, where a chandelier hangs over a clawfoot tub the couple sal -

vaged from a summer cottage restoration. Karen went on to set off the

tub vignette with white curtains hung behind antique corbels mounted

on the walls and ceiling. There are also windows that look out at the forest

where deer browse.

Over the years, the Darntons have used the home to prove to their

clients that their dreams can become reality. Or, how their clients’ kids’

dreams can come true. Case in point: When, years ago, the boys asked

Dick for an MSU Spartan-embossed basketball court off their rec room,

he revved up his backhoe.
