Welcome

Tim DurkinPresident of the Hull & Humber

Chamber of Commerce

I am delighted to introduce you to the 2014 Northern Lincolnshire Business Awards which are now open for entries. I am very much looking forward to this year’s Gala Presentation and Dinner which will be held at Grimsby Auditorium on May 16.

Our Business Awards theme this year is ‘The Seaside’ – I am sure this will prompt memories and refl ections for many of us.

Tourism is an important sector for Northern Lincolnshire, employing some 3,971 in North Lincolnshire and 4,500 in North East Lincolnshire. Our Northern Lincolnshire resort of Cleethorpes has enjoyed a well-deserved renaissance over recent years with increasing numbers of visitors coming to the seaside. Perhaps it’s not surprising, given the number of quality events now being held in the resort every year.

I do hope your company will consider entering this year’s Business Awards. They are a marvellous profi le raiser and a wonderful opportunity for us all to recognise the hard work and talent we have in our area.

Trading conditions are starting to improve but remain challenging, so anything that helps to promote our local businesses and the successes they are having can only be welcomed.

The Hull & Humber Chamber intends to remain the voice of business for our local area for many years to come and we wish to continue providing all possible support to our members in Northern Lincolnshire. Please do let us know of any aspects of your business where you believe that the Chamber can help, perhaps by removing barriers or highlighting your achievements. We not only try and provide practical assistance, but also lobbying.

We hope you will take part in our 2014 Business Awards and make it a year to remember.

Grimsby and Scunthorpe Media Group

In my fi rst full year as head of GSMG media business, it is my great pleasure to continue as the main sponsor for the 2014 Northern Lincolnshire Business Awards.

Along with my responsibilities on the North Bank, it is a great honour to be heading up a business that has in its portfolio the Grimsby Telegraph and Scunthorpe Telegraph, the two most successful newspapers in the newly formed Local World in 2013, in terms of both print and digital audience.

Both the public and private sector are extremely important to all of us and without doubt, 2013 saw the aspirations of the Humber to play a key role in the renewable energy revolution realised and it was here on the South Bank where it was all happening.

The rapid growth of the offshore wind industry was given the national platform it deserved with the arrival of Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. He used the opening of Centrica’s Lincs wind farm at the height of the summer to launch the Government’s strategy for the sector and Grimsby was a glowing example of what this industry brings - Regeneration, investment in infrastructure and new jobs.

We had already celebrated the extension of Port of Grimsby East’s lock gates, enhancing the capability of the docks and as 2013 drew to a close, the long-awaited consent for the construction of Able Marine Energy Park at North Killingholme was received. The potential transformative effect that this last stretch of undeveloped deep water estuary offers cannot be underestimated across the whole of Northern Lincolnshire and beyond.

New manufacturing and new supply chains to tap into, demands for steel to help secure Scunthorpe’s industrial might, to providing demand for homes, hotels and helicopters. While the wind of new opportunity blew favourably, established sectors enjoyed some notable success too. Grimsby’s £26-million car terminal opened for business in the River Humber, substantial investment by OSI in its Scunthorpe burger-producing facilities for McDonald’s saw a valuable relationship toasted and who can forget Tesco’s emotional use of traditionally smoked fi sh to sell us its Finest range? As well as moving back to the Grimsby Auditorium for this year’s event,

I am delighted to announce a new category for the Awards, which I believe is a fi tting tribute at the end of the night to the individual who has demonstrated over many years that they have North Lincolnshire in their blood and befi ts the accolade of ‘Lifetime Achievement’.

I wish you all a prosperous new year in business and I look forward to welcoming you on the night in May.as moving back to the Grimsby Auditorium for this year’s event, look forward to welcoming you on the night in May.

Chair of Chamber in North East Lincolnshire (Freshney Place)

Every year at the Northern Lincolnshire Business Awards a charity draw is held to benefi t local charities. This is supported by the generosity of the guests at the Awards Dinner, who can really make a difference to the chosen charities’ aims. The charities that will benefi t are chosen by the Chamber’s Area Chairmen and this year they are as follows:

In North Lincolnshire Chairman Paul Gouland of Clugston Group has chosen Lindsey Lodge Hospice, a charity at the heart of our community which has touched the lives of many people. Lindsey Lodge Hospice offers very special care for people in the North Lincolnshire area living with life-limiting conditions such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and motor neurone disease. Every year hundreds of patients, families and loved ones benefi t from the care and support that they provide free of charge.

In Grimsby, Freshney Place Centre Director, Amanda Austin, has chosen Grimsby Kitchen. Grimsby Food Kitchen initially started out as a soup kitchen more than seven years ago, reaching out to just six of the homeless individuals in Grimsby and is now a static service in the area, serving over 75 people on a daily basis. The charity helps those in desperate need; the homeless, the elderly, struggling families, those with disabilities, and addicts or people with illness with no-one to turn to.

Grimsby Food Kitchen provide vital support for a whole range of different people locally and never turn anyone away. In addition to cooking up and serving food every Sunday and distributing much-needed food parcels to families across the town, Grimsby Food Kitchen also provide vital support and help, and offer a non-judgmental, caring service for those who need it most.

With the help of donations and valuable volunteers, Grimsby Food Kitchen is making a real difference to the lives of the people it helps.

If your business is able to donate a prize for the raffl e, this would be gratefully received.

These activities draw upon skills and knowledge across a vast range of specialist areas and demonstrate the wealth of talent accessible to the local community through the Grimsby Institute.
