We’ll finalize our 2017 Board meetings that month as well. And, as always, we’ll end the year with a low-key meet- and-greet social. That means other Chapter members have to step up and start taking some responsibility for the Chapter—or we shall not exist. Occasionally you might get a thank you for an event or drive well done and enjoyed, but those will be your only visible rewards. Why does it matter so much? Well, I have heard differing stories over the past 26 years from those not involved in the process as to why we became a separate chapter. Since I was involved in the separation and wrote the majority of the separation proposal, let me set the record straight. At that time, most of the founding Chapters within BMWCCA were located in metropolitan regions. I believe Buckeye was the first to attempt a statewide entity. In the early 1990s the majority of the leadership resided in the Dayton-Cincinnati area. There were some events in Columbus with the rest concentrated in the southwest quadrant. We were active in the Akron-Cleveland area with local events. However, we still had quarterly board meetings in Columbus and had to do quarterly reporting to an executive committee. We felt that having local governance with a direct line of responsibility to National and being committed to local members and events was a better fit for our constituents. Additionally, it meant that we could hold quarterly board meetings in a centralized area of northeastern Ohio during approximately two hours, rather than commit to a 14- or 16-hour day traveling to Columbus four times per year to discuss issues which sometimes held no interest for us or our members. Bottom line: We thought local governance and local focus better suited northeastern Ohio members. However, we have to make the effort to keep it local and to keep it active and viable. Or, yes, we go backwards in time. Yes, things change and cooperative events with other areas can be considered in the future; however, having been in an alternative governance structure, I still strongly believe local management with a voice straight to National is a better service to our membership. So, consider stepping up to support the organization which has served you for the past quarter century. Details of the positions requirements for Board members and officers will be available on the web site in short order, if not by the time you receive this newsletter. This summer has proven to be a period of transition and revaluation for a number of our Board members. While we became involved in the Chapter hoping to further the interest and camaraderie in the marque, frequently, and more frequently of late, other obligations demand our attention. Hence, we did not plan a drive for August and substituted a mid-September tour in Amish country rather than debut a new event format.

We still plan for early October to find us threadingthrough Cuyahoga Valley parks to a craft beer bar for a change-up from the traditional brewery visit. We end the driving season in early November with a progressive food-shopping adventure which might help with holiday menus and which includes historic sights and sites. We’ll finalize our 2017 Boardmeetings that month as well. And, as always, we’ll end the year with a low-key meet-and-greet social.

Aswetransitioninto2018,we’lldebutawintergo-kartseries to keep us off the streets and still “on-track.” So, planonattendingoneofourremaining2017eventsandlook forward to the upcoming year.

The upcoming Fourth-Quarter Board Meeting on November12isacriticalonefortheChapter,and,frankly,for all of you members. Elections will take place at that meeting and you have some serious items to consider.

I cannot sustain being President, Secretary, Driving Events Coordinator, and Webmaster any longer. That means other Chapter members have to step up and start taking some responsibility for the Chapter—or we shall not exist. Each one of those positions requires a time commitment as well as a commitment to the policies and procedures not only that the Chapter has but, even more importantly, to the policies and procedures that the National organization requires we follow. Occasionallyyou might get a thank you for an event or drive well done and enjoyed, but those will be your only visible rewards.

I believe Buckeyewasthefirsttoattemptastatewideentity.Intheearly1990sthemajorityoftheleadershipresidedinthe Dayton-Cincinnati area. There were some events in Columbus with the rest concentrated in the southwest quadrant. We were active in the Akron-Cleveland area with local events. However, we still had quarterly board meetings in Columbus and had to do quarterly reporting to an executive committee. We felt that having local governance with a direct line of responsibility to National and being committed to local members and eventswasabetterfitforourconstituents.

From the Parks to the Sidewalks: Finding the Valley Craft Beer

Saturday,October7,2017–11:30a.m.Meet: Panera Bread, 8233 Golden Link Boulevard, (in the Crossings at Golden Link, corner of Routes 82 and 8), Macedonia – 11:30 a.m.

Drive starts promptly at noon. Meal: 2 p.m. at Craft Beer Bar, 1846 Front Street, Cuyahoga Falls

October is approaching rapidly, heralding the time for the annual beer drive. This year we’re changing things up by visiting a craft beer bar rather than a brewery. Choices, so many choices. We’ll start at the Panera Bread in the

Crossings at Golden Link at the intersection of Routes 8 and 82 in Macedonia. Grab some coffee to keep you and fellow travelers alert as we explore portions of the Cuyahoga Valley National and the Summit County Metroparks.Along the route we’ll journey past some historic sites and through the countryside. We end the drive at Craft-Beer-Bar in Downtown Cuyahoga Falls. Herewe’llbeabletoselectfromover30tapsofcraftbeersandorderyourmealfrom the food menu with separate checks. Now, there’s lots to do later in the afternoon in the Cuyahoga Valley. Stroll the Falls River Square shops or the Riverwalk at High Bridge Glens, head back to the National Park for a hike, visit the Seiberling Nature Realm, or stop by the Harvest Festival at Western Reserve Historical Society’s Hale Farm.To reserve your tour spot contact C. BMW used a hydraulic self-leveling system on the rear suspension on various 5, 6, 7 and 8 series models from the mid’80sthroughthemid’90s.Thereweretwobasictypesof systems. Both systems used rear shock absorbers that have separate hydraulic chambers that can be pumped andpressurizedwithfluidtoraisetherearsuspensionandthe vehicle ride height. The ride height is monitored by a fluidregulatorwithalinkconnectedtotherearswaybar.Of the two systems, the earlier system used a stand-alone electricpumpandfluidreservoirtopressurizetherearshock hydraulic leveling chambers. The later system used thevehicle’spowersteeringpump, reservoirandfluidtopressurizetherearshocks. The early systems were used on the 82-88 E28 5-series (M5 only,intheUS),E246-seriesthrough89(635csi,L6,M6inUS), E23 7-series through 87 (735i, L7 in US).Thelatersystemswereusedonthe89-96E345-series(525it,530it,M5inUS),88-94E327-series(735iL,740iL,750iLinUS)andtheE318-series(various840iand850imodel variants). When eliminating the rear self-leveling systems, you need to replace the shocks and the associated mounting hardware as well as the springs. The self-leveling springs are typically shorter than the non self-leveling springs. Therefore, the springs must be replaced with standard non leveling springs. Bavarian Autosport offers Self-Leveling Elimination Kits for all of these models. The kits consist of all of the shock install parts that are different and need to be changed. To perform a full elimination, you will need the Elimination Kit, 2 standard shocks (Bilstein, Koni, Sachs) and 2 standard springs.

We have all of these items in our online store at www.bavauto.com.With the early style systems, you can disconnect and remove all of the leveling system components, to include; shocks, accumulators, hydraulic lines, regulator, levelingsensorandlink, pumpandfluidreservoir (mounted under spare tire). With the late style systems, you can remove the shocks, accumulators, hydraulic lines from the regulator to the accumulators and to the shocks. With this system, in performing the elimination, you can not just cap off the hydraulic pressure and return lines that come from the pump system. The pressure and return lines must be connected together after removing them from the regulator. Our self-leveling elimination kit addresses this. Finally, you must keep the leveling warning sensor in-place (mounted on the passenger side trailing arm) to prevent a check-control warning from being displayed on the instrument cluster. While the elimination kit does include a female-female union that can be used to connect the two hydraulic lines after they are disconnected from the regulator, this area is rather tight to work in. We have found that we like to cut the two hydraulic lines where they come up from the driver side frame, into the area forward and above the driver side trailing arm (in the wheel well) andinstallnutsandflaretheends(bubbleflare)thenusetwo female/female unions and a short section of brake pipe(pre-flaredwithnuts)bentina“U”toconnectthetwolines (with the unions between the male nut connections). You then just remove all of the original hydraulics from that point rearward.
