elcome to the world of birding and art on Deer Isle!Although reachable by bridge, this island still retainsthe flavor of New England life in the 1950s: rural, neigh-borly, safe. Our welcome sign could read “Welcome to
Deer Isle, the way Life used to be.” Lobstering is the mainstay ofthe economy and granite is still quarried here. Internationallyrenowned Haystack Mountain School of Crafts has broughtmany artists and artisans to the island. Their galleries, studiosand workshops dot the island. A good way to get oriented to thelocal art scene is to attend the fabulous annual Wings, Waves &Woods exhibit on Friday evening.
The archipelago of islands that comprises Deer Isle coversabout 158 square miles. There is nothing linear about this con-voluted granite shoreline, pocked by tiny coves and small work-ing harbors, and rimmed with tidal flats, prime feeding groundsfor shorebirds. By mid-May the spring migration has begun inearnest, bringing waves of warblers and other breeding song-birds from their wintering grounds to the south. More than adozen pairs of Bald Eagles choose Deer Isle and surroundingislands to nest and rear their young. One such nest is very visi-ble from the Causeway Beach with a spotting scope. Deer Isle isconsidered the southern boundary for boreal species like theBoreal Chickadee and Black-backed Woodpecker. Possible sight-ings along the shore include Purple Sandpiper, Black Guillemot,Ruddy Turnstone and Red-throated Loon. Offshore nestingislands and outer waters are likely to offer sightings of ArcticTern, Atlantic Puffin, Razorbills, Northern Gannets, Common
Murres and Great Cormorant. Some of the best birding is found on quiet, out-of-the-way dirt
roads and there are miles of trails on the twelve nature pre-serves. Well-known trip guides Bob and Sandi Duchesne arewith us all weekend, as well as naturalist Kathie Fiveash, and themost experienced and active birders in the area. Boat toursoffer an up-close look at seabirds, as well as seals and porpois-es. Thanks to a thriving arts community, we are able to offer avariety of workshops by artists who know this habitat and itscreatures well. Wings, Waves & Woods is unabashedly informal, welcoming to beginners and families, and a great way toexplore Deer Isle.
Check the schedule for new offerings, including an excitingtrip to Marshall Island, an outdoor sketching workshop, and anew walk at Goose Cove. A special birder’s supper at the HarborCafé on Saturday (tickets available at IHT) is followed by LeslieClapp’s evening presentation right next door in the StoningtonTown Hall. Leslie’s Northern Parula on this year’s poster is asample of her remarkable photography.
Registration packets ($15) contain a wealth of useful informa-tion and resources, including a bird list, nature preserve info, maps, Island Guide, special weekend coupons offered by islandbusinesses and the coveted WWW cap. Packets are available atthe opening reception of “FIELDWORK” at the Deer Isle ArtistsAssociation Gallery and at Island Heritage Trust. We invite youto discover and enjoy Deer Isle—its birds, art and community!
