Respect for Self Respect for Others Respect for Property Message from the Principal 30 August 2019 Dear Parents/Caregivers On Monday our Kapa Haka ropu performed at the Miharo Murihiku Polyfest. It was the first time NSC have taken part and I sincerely hope that we continue to be a part of it. The performance itself was outstanding and can be viewed via our Facebook page. In two weeks our seniors will be sitting their mock examinations which is crucial preparation for the end of year externals. Students were issued with the exam timetable this week and I trust last weeks seminar on revision techniques is being put into practice. Regular revision at home in a quiet, distraction-free environment is vital. Good luck to our GirlsFootball Team who are competing in Wellington next week in one of many tournaments being held around the country. We also have students joining other local school teams in Netball, Boys Football and Rugby. Today we bid farewell to Miss Bots as she leaves for her new position at Lincoln High School. On Monday we will be formally welcoming Mr Coad, HOD Mathematics, to NSC. I am also delighted to announce Mrs Paulette Leach will also be joining our Maths Department in Term 4. Message from the Principal 30 August 2019

Dear Parents/Caregivers On Monday our Kapa Haka ropu performed at the Miharo Murihiku

Polyfest. It was the first time NSC have taken part and I sincerely

hope that we continue to be a part of it. The performance itself was

outstanding and can be viewed via our Facebook page.

In two weeks our seniors will be sitting their mock examinations which

is crucial preparation for the end of year externals. Students were

issued with the exam timetable this week and I trust last weeks

seminar on revision techniques is being put into practice. Regular

revision at home in a quiet, distraction-free environment is vital.

Good luck to our Girls’ Football Team who are competing in

Wellington next week in one of many tournaments being held around

the country. We also have students joining other local school teams in

    Netball, Boys Football and Rugby.

Today we bid farewell to Miss Bots as she leaves for her new position

at Lincoln High School. On Monday we will be formally welcoming Mr

Coad, HOD Mathematics, to NSC. I am also delighted to announce

Mrs Paulette Leach will also be joining our Maths Department in Term

    4. Mrs Leach is currently teaching at Balfour.

Happy Father’s Day for Sunday to all the dads out there! Regards, Mike Newell

If you would like to order one, please use the following link: http://bit.ly/magazineorders We need all orders in by Tuesday 17 September, so that these can be included in the school accounts which will be sent out at the end of this term. Money needs to be paid by Tuesday 5 November, either by internet banking (details on order form) or by cash. Ice Cream Containers

Donations of clean ice cream containers would be very much appreciated by the Caretaker and FTY Department at the College. Please drop off at the office.

Kapahaka - Polyfest 2019 On Monday 26 August the Northern Southland College Kapahaka group travelled to Invercargill to take part in the Murihiku Poylfest. This was the first time that Northern Southland College had taken part in Polyfest with a total 25 students. The students had been working for a term and a half with Elysia TeAtatu from Southern REAP and had been

practicing every Friday during clubs. The students performed various haka and waiata and recieved some tumeke feedback from the organisers of Polyfest. "Poipoia te kakano, kia puawai" - nurture the seed and it will blossom.

Portobello Recap Rangatahi O Te Moana is a great

experience where I got to learn about

the effects of oceanography, as well as

benthic and plankton species, upon the

Polaris II. After collecting our data we

studied our research at the Portobello Marine Laboratory. I

strongly recommend that any Year 11 or 12 students of Maori

descent should apply for this Science Camp. Thank you to the

Alumni of the University of Otago Inc. Scholarship, STAR funding

and Mrs Little for giving me this opportunity.

    Year 7/8 Speech

Congratulations to Ben Slattery who placed 2nd at the Mararoa/Fiordland College/NSC Cluster Year 7/8 Speech Competition last week. He now goes through to the Northern/Western Final next Monday at NSC at 6.30pm.

Mule Challenge Last Wednesday the senior Physical Education students travelled to Queenstown to undertake the 5km Mule challenge at Moke Lake. The course that they completed was similar to an Army assault course with a variety of challenges like an eight-foot wall, hanging rings and mud crawl. The students spent the first half of the session learning to communicate in challenging situations and how to complete the activities safely. This session helped to develop the teamwork between them and gave them an idea of what the course would be like.

To finish off the day they completed the five km course following along behind Dugald who was the instructor. They were required to move within a 5m circle which made it challenging to complete the mud crawl as

they had to wait for the team members to catch up while they were waiting in the mud. It was a great day for the students, challenging what they thought was possible and what they are capable of. They are keen to return again in the future to improve on their performance and show what they are made of.

    NSC Young Farmers

NSC YFC members are heading to a skills day next Saturday 7 September, run by the Gore High School YFC. Here they will participate and learn some new skills in preparation for the Agri-kids and Junior Young Farmers competitions being held in Term 1 next year.

Hockey Season Break Up Hockey season finished with a fun afternoon of Bumper Balls on the turf and a light meal in the gym on Tuesday. NSC had 3 teams compete this year, 7/8 playing in the Eastern Competition and 2 senior teams playing in the Tuesday night Secondary Schools Comp, with our A team finishing 4th in Pool A and B Team 2nd in Pool B. We will be attending the South Island Mixed Hockey Tournament next year with the location still to be confirmed. To help with costs towards tournament we are catering for the meal at the upcoming Lumsden Pool Fundraiser to be held in the Gym, watching the All Blacks play South Africa on the 21 September. Many thanks to all those that have helped with NSC Hockey this season and we look forward to an exciting season next year.

NSC Trophies All those that received academic and/or sporting trophies last year, it is now time to start bringing them back to the Office.
