The small market town of Atherstone sits

on the old Roman Watling Street (A5) which generally forms the upper boundary of North Warwickshire.Hatting was the

traditional industry

for the town but this finished some time ago being replaced by small industrial estates and distribution centres. The town has

a historic centre based around St. Mary’s Church and the Market Square.

Although Bedworth has its civic links

with Nuneaton it is a town with its own friendly identity.Whilst still thought

of as an ex-coal mining area it formed an important part of the 19th century silk ribbon weaving industry of Coventry and North

Warwickshire.Top class

entertainment for the whole of North Warwickshire is provided by The Civic Hall in High Street. In the centre of the

town is Bedworth’s hidden gem, the picturesque Nicholas Chamberlaine Almshouses which were built in 1840.

Coleshill is the main town in the western part

of North Warwickshire lying close to the outer edge of Birmingham. An ancient coaching

town surrounded by countryside, it retains its original character in a steep main street with many interesting

and exclusive shops and features. The historic

coaching inns are now supplemented by restaurants, coffee shops and hotels, providing a wide variety of food, drink and places of accommodation.

Nuneaton is the largest town in North

Warwickshire and is famous for its associations with the 19th century author George Eliot who was born at South Farm on the Arbury Estate just outside Nuneaton in 1819. She lived in the town for much of her early life and based

some of her acclaimed novels around the area. Another much loved son of Nuneaton was the late comedian Larry Grayson – ‘Shut that door’. The lively town

centre is now noted for its award winning shops and traditional street market with over 180 regular stalls.

The large village of Polesworth is located on

the River Anker at the north west tip of Warwickshire and adjacent to the border with Staffordshire, being only four miles from Tamworth. When the Coventry

Canal was built through Polesworth in the 1770s, the

village developed a coal mining and clay industry but these have disappeared since the Second World War. A former opencast coal mine is now an attractive public park and heritage centre. Polesworth is also

rightly noted for its ancient Abbey Church and gatehouse.

34 VISIT NORTHERN WARWICKSHIRE

The friendly market town of Nuneaton is the main town in the area with a good blend of major shops and small independent traders all in a pedestrianised area. It has two major shopping centres and has a rich variety of interesting buildings scattered around.

The award winning Nuneaton Market was first Chartered in 1226, and operates two days a week in the streets throughout the town centre.

On Saturdays there are over 150 stalls and over 100 stalls on Wednesdays. Traders from

all over the Midlands offer a wide variety of goods at competitive prices.

Street vendors also operate in the town centre, offering items such as hot food, flowers and ice cream.

The small town of Bedworth is the floral centre of the area. The open pedestrianised zone gives easy access to a range of shops from the small independent to the larger multiples.

Bedworth Covered Market is situated in Mill Street in the centre of the town and has both market units and stalls. The popular cafe provides a welcome break, serving hot

and cold refreshments.Street vendors are also

located in All Saints Square selling hot food, flowers and ice cream.

Bedworth Town Centre

Nuneaton Town Management Board and the Bedworth Town Management partnership are dedicated to improving the vitality and viability of both town centres.
