DISCUSSIONS on a possible “inte-gration of services” at Northern Health and Austin Health have occurred at board level but the gov-ernment has moved to extinguish staff fears of mass cuts, saying the growing area needs more services.

“I’d say they’re putting the cart well before the horse,” Health Minister David Davis said. “There will be more jobs, more capacity, more services, more opportunities ... in the northern regions of the city

where the population is growing.”Mr Davis said discussions with

clinicians, board members and execu-tives at Northern and Austin Health had been around how to better inte-grate services, but “there is no formal proposal on these matters” .

“Let me make a direct prediction that over the forthcoming years, as over the last two years under this government, the budget of Northern Health will be increased,” he said.

Staff have aired concerns that a merger between the much larger Austin Health and Northern Health would mean cuts to patient services

and staffi ng levels. Mr Davis and Premier Denis Napthine were at the Northern Hospital last Wednesday to announce a $29 million, 32-bed acute inpatient ward to be funded in the 2013-14 budget.

Construction on the three-storey building, which could be expanded to six fl oors, is due to start next year and be completed by 2016.

Yan Yean MLA Danielle Green said the announcement did not allay fears that the government would-merge Northern and Austin Health – both in her electorate.

“The Austin will eat up the Northern Hospital,” she said.

The Northern Hospital is undergo-ing construction of a $24.5 million emergency department and special care nursery upgrade . Mr Napthine said it was “absolutely essential” to meet the needs of the growing north-ern region, estimated to balloon by 55 per cent in 13 years.

THE wheels have fallen off a plan to run a private charter bus ser-vice for Doreen residents to com-mute to work in the city daily.

Resident Rebecca Sharkie’s plan to launch the Doreen Express on May 1 was wel-comed by locals, but not Public Transport Victoria.

“Their lawyers told me that if I did start it, they would close me down,” she said.

“I argued that it was a char-ter bus service, not public trans-port, and that we would be running directly from Doreen to Federation Square without pick-ing up passengers on the way.’’

Ms Sharkie, who came up with the idea because her husband spent up to 90 minutes each way commuting to the city, said the response from locals had been “awesome”, with 200 people interested.

PTV spokeswoman Helen Witton said bus routes 562 and 572 connected Doreen resi-dents to the South Morang train station.

She said legislation made it “clear” that only accredited bus operators with a PTV contract could run regular passenger ser-vices. “The PTV is currently assessing the situation,” Ms Witton said.

Dino Bernardini will be honoured during National Volunteer Week

SUE [email protected]

DINO Bernardini may be 79 but he’s a “youngster” who brings smiles to the residents of the Villa Maria Bundoora aged care facility.

The volunteer does everything from driving the residents in a mini-bus to outings, cooking barbecues and calling bingo for the 90 seniors who call the centre home.

A retired public transport con-trol manager, Mr Bernardini started volunteering a decade ago when his mother became a resident at the home, and continued his work after she passed away in 2004.

“I get a lot out of volunteering,” Mr Bernardini said. “Some of the residents have dementia and often don’t recognise people, but because I’m there so often they remember me.

“Their happiness at seeing me is my reward.”

The Watsonia resident said he enjoyed the centre’s Italian Social Club where “we play music, make espressos,

have morning tea, read the newspapers or some poetry”. He will get a 10-year volunteer service award on May 17 as part of National Volunteer Week (May 13 to 19), at the Malvern Valley Public Golf Course.

“When you retire ... you need something to fi ll in the time. And if it’s something that helps others and is rewarding, then why not do it?” he said.

Villa Maria Bundoora spokes-woman Wendy Dreier said Mr Bernardini played a “vital role” in providing multicultural activities.

“Staff members, residents and fam-ilies are all greeted by Dino’s warm smile and generous personality. The Italian Club is an activity particu-larly enjoyed by residents and family members. Dino welcomes non-Italian residents to this group and the aroma of delicious Italian coffee fi lls the corridors.”

SIX schools will get almost $1.5 mil-lion to spruce up facilities under the state government’s $51.5 million schools maintenance scheme.

The biggest winner is Thomastown Secondary College, which will receive $413,332, followed by $409,221 for Whittlesea Secondary College.

Epping Primary School principal Glenn Beattie said their $237,283 came after a Victoria-wide audit of state school buildings and facilities.

“The grant will supplement what the school community can raise; it will fund the things that we cannot afford to do,” Mr Beattie said.

“It is good that our school commu-nities at the Epping and Greenbrook campuses will see major maintenance carried out and it will give us pride in our school.

“We started in 1874 and our oldest

buildings are in good shape, but oth-ers need work.”

Whittlesea Secondary College prin-cipal Terry Twomey said its grant would allow the school to have “fi rst class” facilities.

“We have a 30-acre [12-hectare] site, 870 students, and maintenance works such as painting and carpeting will bring [facilities] up to fi rst class standard.”

Leonie White, the principal of Thomastown Secondary College, said well-maintained facilities boosted students’ self-esteem.

“We all like to live and work in a good environment,’’ she said.

“And we have students from 50 different countries in one of the most disadvantaged areas but they all take pride in the school.’’

She said the grant would be spent on carpeting and improving storm water drainage, paving and playing fi elds.

Thomastown East Primary Sch ool will get $249,119.

Acting principal Jeremy Blaney said the grant would complement a recent upgrade of the school’s main classrooms.

“The art room, library and hall were not covered under an earlier grant, so this is an excellent oppor-tunity to maintain and improve the standards of the remainder of the school to ensure that facilities are in good working order and conducive to learning,” he said.

Doreen Primary School will receive $84,193 and Lalor East Primary School will receive $80,713.

WHITTLESEA’S main drag, Church Street, will get a $3.7 million facelift but it will take years to complete.

An offi cer’s report presented at a recent council meeting stated the revamp would take place over three stages but only part of the fi rst stage would be funded in the 2013- 14 council budget.

“Funding to provide for completion of stage one and construction of stages two and three will be considered in future budgets,” the report stated.

It is likely the council would seek state and federal funding to help with costs.

The council has adopted a master plan to improve Church Street while retaining the rural character of the area including heritage buildings, wide open streets and maintaining views to the Kinglake Ranges and open paddocks.

The plan includes improving landscaping and seating around the war memorial and providing interpretative signs and plaques on heritage buildings.

Existing plane trees which form part of the Avenue of Honour for fallen Australian servicemen and women would be retained while other plants surrounding them would be replaced with less intrusive and hardier plants. There would also be planting in the median strip and in off-street parking areas.

Street “furniture” would be replaced with a consistent style of seats, benches, bicycle racks, drink fountains and litter and recycling bins, under the plan.

The plan includes improving paving and drainage, upgrading the Church Street reserve playground, revamping bus stops, improving street lighting, better parking facilities and a new public toilet near the intersection of Church and Lime streets.

The offi cer’s report stated two public consultations had shown residents and traders generally supported the plan which was the fi rst since Church Street was renewed about 25 years ago.

SUE [email protected]

WHITTLESEA council is lobbying the state and federal governments to remove a superannuation black hole which cost it $6.8 million this year. Councillor Mary Lalios said about 60 council staff were members of an old scheme, the Local Authorities Superannuation Fund Defi ned Benefi t Plan, which required councils to top up reserves if the fund’s investments fell.

“It is a ridiculous scheme which has to be fully funded in the event of every member dying or a mass walk off the job on the same day,” Cr Lalios said.

She said the plan was hit by the global fi nancial crisis and councils must make up losses. Whittlesea coun-cil had to pay $6.8 million to help top up a $396 million shortfall .

Cr Lalios, who was recently appointed as the deputy president of

the Municipal Association of Victoria, said the council had paid out the entire amount from its unallocated budget funds in February.

“They are called unallocated funds, but that money is for community facil-ities; we could have built an activity centre or 10 or 15 playgrounds . This year’s council budget is tight, we are a growing city and it is unfair to expect us to face the possibility of a further call for top-up funds if the [share] markets go down in the future.”

She said she successfully moved two motions in a recent council meet-ing for the council to lobby the state and federal governments to change the scheme and bring it into line with other superannuation funds.

“ Governments have unfunded schemes where when people leave or retire they have the funds to pay them; not the ridiculous situation of having enough money to pay every member out on one day,” she said.

PROFILE

As a child, Michael Davis was much more likely to be found hanging around the canteen, armed with coins

to buy lollies, than passing a ball around the netball court with his twin sister Elise.

However after one too many sugar rushes, his mother Tracey decided to “throw him on the court” when Davis was nine.

Fast forward eight years and Davis, now 17, has been selected as the goal shooter in the Australian under-17 men’s netball team bound for Malaysia later this year.

The year 12 Mill Park Secondary College student has played with Plenty Valley Netball Association at RMIT University since the beginning of his netball days.

Davis plays for ‘‘Roxy’’, a mixed team competing on Saturdays, where he has been coached by Rita Pitruzzello for the past fi ve years . Pitruzzello says although Davis’s height of just over 193 centimetres provides a signifi cant advantage, it’s his skill level and ability to read the play that sets him apart . “He is not one of those rough players. He

fi ts in well with the girls,” she says. Davis’s netball career started getting

serious when he made the Victorian men’s netball team last year. But the nationals were bittersweet – Davis injured his knee fi ve minutes into the semi fi nal.

“I jumped up to grab the ball and landed with a straight leg and my body turned,” he says. “I was very upset and in heaps of pain… when the trainers came over the fi rst thing I said was ‘would I be able to play tomorrow?’”

The prognosis was grim; Davis couldn’t walk , let alone play in the grand fi nal the next day. However in a show of sportsmanship the grand fi nal against New South Wales was to prove a memorable experience for Davis – and his opposition.

NSW’s goal shooter had also been sidelined with an injured leg. With two minutes and forty seconds left of the game, and with NSW trailing by more than 25 goals, both teams decided to send their shooters out to play, under the condition

they weren’t to be defended. “Mum and grandma were both crying,” Davis says.

“It went goal for goal,” says Tracey. “Victoria ended up winning the game by 34 goals, 74-40, so the result was out of the question but they wanted to get the boys on the court.

‘‘It was great sportsmanship from both sides. It was very touching to watch.”

The Victorian team is aiming for its sixth straight nationals win this year. In the meantime, Davis is focused squarely on the upcoming championships in Malaysia. It will be the fi rst time he has travelled overseas.

“I’m a bit nervous to go to a different country. It will be a bit of a culture shock,” he says.

Davis hopes the experience will help him progress through the ranks to open grade competition – although he says the journey is as important as the end goal . “I want to just keep playing as I am for as long as I can and see where it takes me.”

COVERSTORY

You can leave your hat onAfter the accident that nearly killed him 16 months ago, Ian “Molly” Meldrum is back. By Peter Wilmoth

In the weeks after December 15, 2011, the evening he fell off a ladder at his Richmond home and sustained severe injuries, we faced

the prospect of a world without Molly. And, for millions of Australians who grew

up with him, it would have been a much less-entertaining world, a world without a version of English that Molly Meldrum made his own and that we all came to love.

But clearly Meldrum is made of tough stuff. Here he is, sitting on his favourite couch at his Richmond home, juggling phone calls, talking to his dog Ziggy, as energetic as he was just a few weeks before the accident.

Back then, I had dropped in and he’d shown me a cake the shape and (almost) the size of a mummy’s tomb. That visit was to a man without a care, chatting about Rhianna and Beyoncé and Jay-Z and Egypt and St Kilda Football Club. A few weeks later Australia was holding its breath, waiting on daily reports

about his progress, about whether he would survive the terrible accident.

It’s a great relief to see that Meldrum appears to be in great shape. And that his mischievous sense of humour is as sharp as ever. “They had a speech therapist when I had to do stuff for television and she was great,” he says of his rehabilitation. “We can’t explain it but I’d lost my ‘ums’ and ‘errs’.

“I asked (the doctors) if I could have the speech therapist again. They said, ‘You don’t need it’. I said, ‘Well, I actually do because somehow I’ve lost my ums and errs and, let’s face it, if I lose them and I lose my hat, that’s it; the act’s gone for me’.”

As much as wants to avoid the “icon” references, Meldrum is still as big as they come in this country. His star – which rose in the 13 years he hosted the ABC’s Countdown and then for years on Hey Hey It’s Saturday – has never dimmed. The honours have fl owed, including recently appearing on an Australia

Post stamp. Now he’s the subject of a stage show and a television program. “I don’t know much about it,” he says. “Molly the musical – imagine that. I think the working title is You Can Leave Your Hat On, whatever that means. I’ve authorised it, but I prefer them to do it, not me.” He will be involved as an adviser.

How does he feel about the shows? “I’m trying not to put too much thought into it. Initially I was, ‘No, no, no’, as I was with the stamp. I felt embarrassed. But then I thought, ‘Stop being stupid and so ungrateful’.”

His career is powering ahead, too. He’s re-signed with Channel Seven to appear on Sunrise and Sunday Night, and continues his work with Foxtel and MTV.

Meldrum talks about his gratitudetowards the specialists and hospital staff who cared for him, his brother, Brian Meldrum, and long-time personal assistant, Yael Cohn,

who worked around the clock to co-ordinate his recovery.

Rehab was tough, he says: “They wouldn’t take no for an answer so I had to learn that they wouldn’t take no for an answer.”

What was the most diffi cult part of rehab? “Being in the ward that had head injuries and all of that and meeting all the different patients and realising that I’m lucky and I didn’t realise there was so much of this and how patients cope with it.”

Meldrum says he often refl ects on how lucky he was to survive, and the extraordinary nature of the reaction to his accident.

“The response was overwhelming,” he says. “From the Australian public, the cards, the letters, the emails. There were thousands of cards.

Some were addressed to Ziggy saying, ‘How are you; how are you coping with this?’ It was too much to cope with. I didn’t know how to cope with it. I was overwhelmed by it.”

Page 11: Northern Weekly

On December 15, 2011, Meldrum fell off a ladder while putting up Christmas decorations at his Richmond home, sustaining a fractured skull, ribs, shoulder blade, vertebrae and collarbone.

He also sustained brain injury and had to be placed in an induced coma.

He spent fi ve weeks at The Alfred hospital, “which I don’t remember at all because I was unconscious, basically”.

He then spent fi ve more weeks recovering at the Epworth Hospital. The weeks in hospital wore him down. Perhaps not considered a fl ight risk, Meldrum was fed up with being in hospital and did a runner from the Epworth.

“I just thought, ‘I’ve got to get out and I’ve got to be home and not have people treating me as a patient and be mollycoddled’, because I’m hopeless at that,” he says.

“At that time there were promos on telly for a series called Alcatraz. So I carefully watched the promos and thought ‘Mmmm’.” It was arranged for him to be at the gym in the morning.

“I thought, ‘right’. The night before they were showing the Academy Awards so I watched that with everyone else. In the morning I went across to the gym.

“(The trainer) said, ‘I’ve got to do something, you just go and sit over there’. I said, ‘I think I’ll just go for a walk’. I said, ‘It will do me good to exercise’.

“And then I took off through the gates, and she said to someone, ‘Molly’s just gone!’ and the chase was on. I went the wrong way.

“For someone who lives in Richmond, just down the road – I ended up in Hoddle Street, and that’s where they caught up with me.”

As part of his rehab, Meldrum fl ew to Phuket for three weeks, “to swim and do rehab and also to get out of what I call the ‘Molly bubble’. It was overwhelming.” In the bubble, he was too much the centre of attention.

“Believe it or not, a lot of my character is introverted so I didn’t know how to cope with it. I really didn’t.”

The experience changed him in many ways. “Getting to know a lot of the other patients and become good friends with them, I thought, ‘My God, I’m nothing compared with what Scotty has to go through’. And watching them address it and cope with it and be very obedient in doing the rehab, I thought, ‘If they can cope with this, and not complain, that is great’.”

At what point did he realise he was going to be OK? “I didn’t really look at it that way. I just was determined that I didn’t want to have to be a patient to anyone and be fussed about and whatever, you know? I guess that drive helped me. And people being so nice.”

Back at home in Richmond, and feeling much

better, Meldrum went about his normal life.“People would come up in the street, down at

Coles. I didn’t stop doing things I do normally anyway, shopping. It was embarrassing.

“I’d go down to Coles and people would say, ‘We’ll help you push the trolley’. ‘No, no, no, please don’t do that’. And then I had to explain it was holding me up, for god’s sake.”

He found strength through the support of his friends, his brother and Yael Cohn who, he says, did “an incredible job”.

“And just people, you know. I might be just walking down the street and people would stop me in their cars and that gives you strength.

“And my beloved St Kilda, my team, did some really lovely things. Storm did some incredible things as well. So I felt very proud of that.”

Physically he’s on the mend even if he says the plates that are inserted in various parts of his body “still move a bit – one on my left shoulder, one in the ribs, one on the spine.” He’s got his humour back. I suggest that barracking for St Kilda is character building.

“If character building is a pathetic man that wears a hat who’s seen crying at the MCG twice in one year with Collingwood in two grand fi nals, I’m not sure that’s character building.”

What is it then? “I think that’s tragic.” He seems to be in a great place. He spends

two months a year with his partner in Thailand. He’s back working hard and has

never been in greater demand.Meldrum takes me into his back garden to

show me where the accident happened.“I slipped and crashed there,” he says,

pointing to the side of the pool. There’s been plenty of that famous Meldrum

chuckle today, and our meeting ends with one.He says he spoke at a function after the

accident. He got up and said: “I’m sitting at a table with (diver) Matthew Mitcham.

“I’ve always been in awe of him because of what he achieved at the Beijing Olympics … Looking at him I actually hold him in more awe now, right? Don’t get me wrong. I don’t fancy Matthew.

“Why I hold him in awe is I keep on thinking, ‘How the f--- did you climb up that incredible podium and not fall off, let alone then do the perfect dive, whereas I only went up a ladder, a very small one, and the pool was right beneath me, and I missed the f---ing pool completely.

“How did you do it?’ “I said to him later, ‘I hope you didn’t mind me saying that’.

He said, ‘No, mum and dad loved it’.”

‘We can’t explain

it but I’d lost my ‘ums’ and ‘errs’.’

MOTORING

But there’s a full-size spare under the fl oor.I enjoyed my time in the car immensely, but

then I enjoy driving. If you buy a car to get from A to B and nothing more, there are better deals to be found among Mazdas, Hyundais and Mitsubishis.

The Up! is a surprising car. The best surprise is the economy, it’s brilliant. But the biggest surprise is that the Up! doesn’t

know it’s such a small car.Cars of this size can get a little wayward

at freeway speeds, and quite noisy. Generally they’re not nice once out of the city. But at 100 kilometres an hour the Up! is solid and no noisier than plenty of big cars. At 120km/h however noise rises. You don’t want to go any faster.

It rides surprisingly well for something of this size but chuck it into a challenging corner and you quickly fi nd its limits. It’s not as solid as VW’s Golf or even the Polo, and it’s easy to get understeer, where the front wheels skate ahead, something to think about if the road’s wet.

The little three-cylinder is a valiant trier and ever enthusiastic, but its promises are beyond its abilities. You think you’re going hard until you realise all the other cars are still with you.

And on the highway you need to be in the right gear to overtake, and have a generous

length of clear road. Decent hills require a down-shift.

Not surprisingly there’s no auto transmission available. Anyway the Up! is from Europe where 80 per cent of buyers choose manual.

But it’s this very lack of power that makes the car such fun. You can wring its neck and not break any laws. Note however the motor’s severe lack of torque which leaves you high and dry when you need solid go and the revs aren’t right.

It will appeal to people who enjoy driving. For everyone else it doesn’t make a lot of sense; it’s expensive and basic both in equipment and fi nish. There’s a lot of bare metal in the cabin and few little niceties. By far the most annoying thing to me was the lack of centre console ventilation outlets.

The seats are thin but not bad, the rear is for kids. The boot is very narrow but quite deep – maybe one mid-size suitcase inserted vertically.

PROPERTYOFTHEWEEK

A lick of render to some 1980s brickwork has given this property the street presence it deserves. In a prime position at the end

of a quiet cul-de-sac this is the fi rst property you see as you turn down this court.

Its facade is behind a garden that has been manicured to perfection – trimmed hedges circle an elegant statue, wrought iron gates open to a perfectly paved driveway. There are no cracks or weeds around here.

It soon becomes clear that it is not just the render that makes this property shine. In the fi ve years the owners have lived here, they have given the property a thorough makeover both inside and out.

The house is, in a sense, two residences

beneath the one roof. Downstairs, there is a near -new second kitchen off the rumpus . It has the fi nest fi nishes with granite benches, stainless steel appliances and jarrah cabinets. However, the standout feature in this kitchen is the bluestone pizza oven, which is used by the owners to cook casseroles, stews, pizzas and biscuits.

Guests regularly congregate here, not just for the good food, but also for the large granite-clad bar and wine cellar.

The rumpus has plenty of space to entertain inside, while French doors to the backyard ensure that the party can spill out there.

The lower fl oor also has a bedroom, ideal for an elderly live-in relative. There is a shower in the nearby laundry and a separate toilet.

Make your way upstairs and an elegant glass chandelier suspends overhead .

With so much storage below, the property’s

upper level can be reserved for your fi nest furnishings. They are best displayed in the front lounge and dining rooms, which have polished parquetry fl oors and high ceilings recently fi tted with downlights.

Glass doors lead out to the verandah, which stretches across the whole length of the facade. From the far left you can see views of the city. The owners like to come out here on New Year’s Eve to watch the fi reworks above the skyline.

Whether a festive occasion or just a regular day, you can also prepare meals for friends and family in the upstairs kitchen. It is positioned behind the formal rooms and near a meals area. It has white tile splashbacks to match the fl oors and a breakfast bar.

As in the lounge, parquet ry fl ooring in the bedroom adds a layer of luxury to an already clean and comfortable space.

The bedroom has mirrored wardrobes, a modest-sized en suite and glass doors opening out to the verandah and those city views.

The other two bedrooms share a large central bathroom with twin vanities, bath, shower and glass tiles.

One of the property’s two garages can be reached from inside. It is large enough for two cars and has extra room at the rear for storage or a workshop. The other garage is reached from the backyard. It is single entry only, but deep enough for three vehicles and has a high enough roof for a caravan or boat.

This property is not just ideal for a family with elderly relatives, but also one with young children. The 610-square metre block has a fl at, good-sized backyard. The property is located in a quiet court and is within walking distance of Thomastown Meadows Primary School.
