Fiscal year 2018-19 was yet another year of growth for NNI and
an expansion of services to the Northland. NNI continues to
help more people in more ways.
Meeting the growing demand for essential home repairs
continued to be one of NNI’s biggest challenges. New partners
and increased funding allowed NNI to invest over $700,000 in
critical home repairs.
The NNI at Work program provides yet another way for NNI to
improve neighborhoods throughout the Northland through
education, codes enforcement, and resource linkage. In this
fiscal year NNI at Work achieved over 70% compliance.
This annual report offers highlights some of the countless ways
area residents benefited from NNI’s efforts this past year. We
hope you’ll be impressed!
Finally, we offer heart-felt gratitude to our board of directors,
staff, generous donors, community partners, member
neighborhood organizations, volunteers and advocates. Thanks
to your support, NNI remains dedicated to serving the
Northland and its residents through better housing, better
communities, and better lives.
Sincerely,
President Chief Executive Officer
JC Sanders

Northland Neighborhoods, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to neighborhood
improvement and revitalization in Clay and Platte counties. NNI works with residents,
governmental entities, and other organizations to find resources and solutions for
better housing, better communities and better lives. NNI helps ensure the Northland is
an outstanding place to live. Founded in 1996, NNI is the only community development
corporation serving the Northland.

The old US 69, once a major thoroughfare, bustling with activity and one of the first malls in the metro
area, became lined with vacant, dilapidated store fronts that were only interrupted by the random bars, used car lots, and check cashing establishments. Criminal activity was on the rise and impacting
surrounding neighborhoods.
In 2014, FOCUS Vivion Road was born. NNI brought together neighborhood leaders, developers, civic
leaders and professionals from the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and Missouri Department of
Transportation with a goal to improve the Vivion Road corridor and the adjoining neighborhoods.
FOCUS Vivion Road has had many accomplishments to celebrate since its’ inception. New retail, home
repairs, revitalized neighborhoods, and infrastructure improvements
are becoming standard fare.
In this fiscal year, a traffic study was conducted that completes the
Vivion Road Streetscape Plan, which clears the way for planned,
essential road and pedestrian improvements. The Anita Gorman Pool
opened to rave reviews and the Foxwoods Shopping Center got a
much needed facelift.
After witnessing the success of FOCUS Vivion Road, including a
significant decrease in criminal activity. The Kansas City Police Department requested that NNI replicate
FOCUS Vivion Road for the North Oak corridor.
FOCUS North Oak began in 2018. Like Vivion Road, North Oak Corridor
was experiencing the plight of an old, declining state highway. Vacant
and problematic businesses, disorder, and criminal activity was
becoming more common than anyone was comfortable with. Again, NNI
brought together all major stakeholders and went to work! In this fiscal
year, a Façade Program was completed. NNI facilitated the removal of
pole signs and improvements to the fronts of local businesses. Over
thirty essential home repairs were provided in adjoining neighborhoods.
Criminal activity was addressed by KCPD. More to come!
NNI Planning & Development Committee meets on an as-needed
basis, reviewing all development plans that may have an impact
on the neighborhoods in the Northland. The impacted neighborhoods are invited to participate. Plans are reviewed and the developer is interviewed. The Committee then makes a recommendation and testifies, if needed.

As we see growth and new development across the Northland, neighborhoods in the early annexation areas are threatened by the effect of an aging housing stock, limited incomes, and an older population. Many homeowners do not have the resources to make necessary repairs. Homes become unsightly, unsafe, inefficient, and depreciate in value. Left unaddressed, the home becomes unlivable and vacant and the resident may become homeless. Additionally, deterioration of one home on a block spreads swiftly to nearby homes and, eventually, to the whole neighborhood.
NNI tackles this threat to residents, neighborhoods, and the Northland with our NNI Home Repair Programs. Utilizing professional, licensed, and insured contractors, NNI prevents homelessness and makes homes safe, attractive, energy efficient, and an asset to the neighborhood again. Home repairs range from appliance repair to HVAC to full rehabilitation projects and everything in between.
In fiscal year 2018-19, NNI provided essential home repair services to
218 low to moderate income families, including 180 older adults, investing nearly $900,000.

never have been able to afford.”

NNI at Work achieved over 70% compliance on 2,258 codes cases.
The NNI at Work program helps Kansas City residents and property owners avoid being in
violation of Nuisance Ordinances and/or Property Maintenance Codes. NNI works with the
Kansas City Neighborhood Preservation Department and 311 Action Center. When a
Northland property is reported to the 311 Action Center, the case comes to NNI first. NNI
informs the owner and resident and works with them to abate the violation. Over 70% of
the 2,258 cases in this fiscal year resulted in the violation being abated, the residentavoiding a formal citation, and without intervention of Kansas City Neighborhood
Preservation or the Municipal Court.
