The scenic roads and byways

between Manchester and

Bennington will be highlighted

by the brightly colored jerseys of

bicycle racers during the week-

end of May 5 and 6, as the Tour

of the Dragons Cycling Race

returns to the Shires of Vermont.

“The event is a perfect blend

of a tough, challenging, early

season race, and the opportuni-

ty to bring a serious sporting

event to Vermont in a typically

slow season,” said Race Director

Jim Marshall. “Racers will love

the particular difficulties of

each of the three courses, and

local economies will benefit

from the influx of racers, their

The Tour of the Dragons is a

Bennington will be the setting for

the Saturday Time Trail and

an individual race on an 11-mile

course in southeast Bennington.

ing on the streets of Bennington

on a short, half-mile circuit with

fast corners.

Sunday brings the weekend’s

signature race, the Daniel S.

Maneely Memorial Road Race

that takes place in Manchester

and the surrounding communi-

ties. Racers will compete on a

62-mile course in this event, trav-

eling north from the Dana

Thompson Recreational Park on

Route 30, into Dorset, Pawlet and

ing dirt sections of Rupert

race continues south through

Sunderland and then north

through the Chiselville Covered

Bridge. Racers will experience

an uphill finish at Burr and

Burton Academy. Spectators are

welcome and are encouraged to

be at the finish at BBA.

Orvis offers free

fly fishing clinicsIf you’ve always wanted to

try the sport of fly fishing but

never had the opportunity,

Orvis is offering free fly fishing

lessons starting on May 5 in its

Manchester flagship store.

“The past two years’ success

of Fly Fishing 101 is truly amaz-

ing and encouraging,” said Tom

Rosenbauer, marketing director

of the Orvis Company. “Our

goal is to encourage people of

all ages and background to

come learn more about the fas-

cination of fly fishing.”

Trout Unlimited and the

Federation of Fly Fishers will

lend this support to the pro-

gram again this year with vol-

unteers and free memberships

for attendees of the class.

The classes are broken into

two sessions. The 101 course

will consist of one hour of cast-

ing instruction and one hour

rigging. Since most partici-

pants are true beginners, the

focus will be on basic skills. In

the 201 course, participants will

take the next step by fly fishing

in the water at a local location

where they will have a great

chance at catching their first

fish.

Attendees who complete the

program will receive coupons

good toward Orvis gear. Classes

start on May 5; for exact times,

call the Manchester Orvis store

at (802) 362-3750.
